After starting BOINC (running Climateprediction and SETI@home) on Windows XP, it normally runs fine for one or two days, but then it seems to eat up almost all system resources. Starting new applications is no longer possible - Windows reports the app cannot be initialized (error code 0xc000012d). This affects even the task manager, so I can't check how much resources are actually used up. After quitting BOINC, it takes some time until apps can be started again, but some of them still behave strangely, the only way to reurn to normal is a reboot (which requires a hard reset, as the shutdown procedure does not do anything).

I found some other users having this problem too, but no solution so far. I already tried to reduce the resource usage in the peferences to make sure that some GB on my hard disk remain unused, but this did not solve the problem.

It may be interesting that at the same time I experience this problem, BOINC seems to be unable to receive work from the Climate project (while it did work right after starting BOINC). The work unit it had been working on does not show up any more in the client, even though I'm sure it cannot be completed yet. BOINC regularly contacts the server, but always reports "no work".

Any help is appreciated, as I cannot run BOINC at all under these circumstances.

Joerg

What I've noticed about memory leaks.
If your connection isn't always on, try to disable network access in BOINC Manager (and enable it as needed).
(Files menu Disable BOINC Network Access)
Next, if you've got an ADSL connection, you may also have a conventional modem enabled. You can disable it in Configuration Panel -> System -> Devices.
Also check if you have modem drivers enabled at startup.

I found the problem.
It was my Antivirus (Antivir Vers.6).
It was changed from 5 to 6 as i installed my OS new.
I have deinstalled it and everything works fine again.

I run BOINC 24/7 for weeks at a time with no ill effects.

Have you checked your system lately for a virus, spyware, or trojan lately?

I too, have BOINC running 24/7 under XP without any trouble.
Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

Antivir (www.free-av.com) made both my WinXP laptop and desktop machines crash on CPDN, resulting in pages upon pages of error results for both CPDN and LHC which did a \'CreateProcess() failed\' after CPDN went down. seti@home did run fine though. After reading about Antivir in various threads on these forums, I installed AVG and now both machines trickled for the first time.

Other examples of syptoms after a CPDN crash were buttons missing from BoincManager, icons missing off the desktop, unable to start up new programs (even taskmanager), and so on.
