I have trickles up to 15/06 at 05:00'ish, nothing after that. I'd noticed that my RAC had been very static for a few days prior to that. In the meantime, the wu I was crunching has successfully completed, and uploaded. I am now crunching a new wu, which also is not recording any trickles.

Last time this happened, it all sorted itself out after a few days. I wouldn't worry about it.

I also have not had any trickles since 15/06. I am going to SUSPEND Climate on all my PC's till they make some sort of statement. I don't see why I should waist my PC's time crunching this project when I can get better value for time on another.

I have not seen any trickles since 6/15 either. If there is a problem with this project, why is there nothing posted concerning it? It hardly seems resonable to keep folks who are DONATING time to this project in the dark...

There appears to be a policy of not talking about computer problems.
It may be because there are usually no problems, or it may be University policy not to give the public any clues about University computers.

Either way, this project is about science research, and credits are/were just to keep users from other projects happy. The science data is safe, it's just the publicly visible parts that are missing. Credits can be recalculated at any time.

The current problem WILL get fixed. And SETI is down far more often than here.

Well, if there is such a policy, it certainly seems to be a strange way to operate.

I an not particularly concerned with the credits not being counted. I am concerned that the computer time I am donating to the project is being utilized. I don't know of any other indicator one can use to determine if the computed data is actually making it back to the system other than looking for trickles. I consider that an acknowledgment that the computations performed have been received. If the data being sent back is still being captured, fantastic. A simple news posting on the WEB explaining that there is a temporary problem but that all data is still being collected would go a long way with the volunteer community.

Yes, SETI does go down, much like all BOINC projects. However, SETI does, at least, post news items when it happens that explain what is going one and let folks know that the processed data is not being wasted.

Trickles are mainy for stats purposes and very little information is returned within one.

If the server doesn't see a trickle then it doesn't matter. Stats are calculated on the amount of work completed, i.e. the timestep in the model, and you will receive the correct credit for _all_ the work you have done when the server gets the _next_ trickle from you.

The only time (as far as I know) science information is sent back is at the end of each of the three phases, mainly the last phase. If the model completes, and the ~8 MiB of data generated is returned, the the full scientific value of the model run obtained, there is no wasted processor time at all.

Trickes are _just_ so that you get some feedback from the model, your experiment would run perfectly well without them.

> A simple news posting on the WEB explaining that there is a

Can't disagree with that at all.

>
>I would have thought that keeping people informed of any computer or server problems at the university, would have been justified, if only as a politeness to the users. After all if users leave the project due to prolems with the University computers, they may not come back, and if this is taken to a logical extreme, there will be no Climate Prediction Project.

The Climate Prediction people could do a lot worse than copy Seti in informing people of problems via the home page of the web site.

Hello,

> A simple news posting on the WEB explaining that there is a
> temporary problem but that all data is still being collected would go a long
> way with the volunteer community.

I agree!
I don't know how the information policy of CPDN compares to other projects but Seti certainly does a better job at letting people know when they are down.

I think it shows some courtesy and respect for the people donating their computer time to keep them informed.
It does not need to be the full story. Just a note that there is a problem, what nature it is and when it is going to be fixed (like "Will be working on it monday morning...").

If I have to research the message groups and built a consensus first every time, just to determine if CPDN has a problem or my machine, that is annoying over time.

I definitely would appreciate it, if there was some information available. Thanks!

Friedrich

We can expect some sort of announcement/acknowledgement of the problem today. I don't want to say too much more and pre-empt that announcement too much.

I also finished a wu yesterday, but I'm not sure that the result has reached the server. Where can I see that for sure?

On your account page under Results.
Due to server problems, some info may be missing until things settle down.

The best check I know of is to see whether the five files have disappeared off your computer. There are named '(result_name)'_1.zip through '(result_name)'_5.zip

If they are still there then something may have gone wrong, if they are gone then the science should have been safely uploaded. AFAIK The upload servers are quite separate from the trickle/results database which is having such problems.

Hi!

> News on the front page.
I just took a look at it. That's it!
A short statement:
- acknowledging that there is a problem on their end
- some information on when they will be able to tackle the problem
- an estimated time until they will have fixed it (if possible)
- any recommendations for the users, e.g. not to upload results or trickles
- a short note once the problem has been fixed

That is all I need to be a much happier cruncher!
;-)

Please make that a habit!

Thanks!

Friedrich

I agree. That simple post makes all the difference. Hope they decide to keep the policy of informing users in place

Where are these files located? I've had no tricles since 8th June. The current simulation is >70% completed, but the results page doesn't show either phase 1 or 2.
