The purpose of this thread is for you, the BOINC user, to put up anything you discover about running and using BOINC that make a difference and you would like to share with other users. Read the thread before you post so as to avoid repeats. My tip is to keep an eye on \'Computers\' in \'Your account. You may get multiple entries for the same computer if you do a \'detach\' or do some kind of major restart. You can \'merge\' multiple entries only for the same computer and the older entry will merge into the newer entry. K. |

Most of us are transplanted beta testers. There really hasn't been much need to detach over here since cpdn has for the most part been a real smooth ride. However, this thread will probably come in handy shortly, when the newer transplants arrive. It never hurts to remind about the basics. Team Site Link |

It can appear that BOINC has hung if there is a problem with the download (e.g. a checksum error). If this is the case you can restart the download by performing a project reset. If you're using the GUI interface you need to left click on the project to bring up the menu. With the CLI version it's "boinc_cli -reset_project climateprediction.net". Project reset invalidates everything related to the project (including work units in progress) and requests a new set of programs and work from the server. The computer retains the same identity (as opposed to detaching and reattaching, which will allocate a new computer identity). When you do a reset work units in progress won't be removed from your machine, but there's no problem with deleting them from your system because the run is incomplete. |

It is a good idea to hang on to the compressed results from completed runs because only a small subset (6MB out of around 200MB) is returned to the servers. If your run is of particular interest it is possible that the project team may want to retrieve more of the results or download another program to perform further analysis. If you've deleted the results the model will have to be run again. If you are short of disk space you can always back up the results. |
