Computer freezes completely with earth image stuck on screen, and have to switch off and on again. No error message as far as I can tell.

Machine has never done this before, but don\'t do games so maybe system has not been taxed before to this extent.

What diagnostics can I run ? (XP on a laptop)

Agree with Jim K. Possible video driver problem, or heat related. Make sure there is good ventilation under/around the laptop.

You\'ve had the model for 4 days now, and haven\'t trickled.
Do you have Network activity suspended? (Menu, commands)
In the work tab, does the status section say Suspended or Running?

I\'ve got Network activity based on preferences, and status says suspended. I have seen a red message briefly, that I took to be network actvity.

There are 3 Suspends:
1) In the menu under Commands; Suspends BOINC, and everything in it.
2) In the Project tab; Suspends whichever project is selected.
3) In the Work tab; Suspends whichever model is selected.

The first isn\'t a toggle; you need to select one of the other 2 options.
The other 2 are, with the text on the button changing between Suspend and Resume.

Does this help?

Tried the prime test for a while, and it didn\'t find any problems. Couldn\'t figure out the memtest one immediately. Will look into vid.

I think it\'s trying to run whenever I\'m not busy myself; it\'s just that it gets stuck. Is not suspended in your option 1) anyway.

I have just noticed that \'connections\' under the \'options\' menu item doesn\'t include the wifi card that I use to connect to the internet, just various defunct things. How do I fix that ? Sorry to be a nuisance.

You may have your preferences, (in your account), for \'Do work while computer is in use?\' set to No.

Not sure about wifi, but there was a suggestion last year somewhere, possibly on BOINC/dev, to use \'Lan\' setting, to stop BOINC continually asking which net connection to use.
\'Lan\' makes it recognize the default setting.
Worked for me. It was driving me nuts, with it\'s popup appearing all the time.

It may also work for wifi.

No worries about questions. There are too many variables to create a definitive list.

I have a WiFi link to the router on one of my machines. The LAN setting works for me.

The freezing may well be heat-related, but there still seems to be some sort of connectivity problem because I have a blank in \'statistics\' and \'transfers\' whatever I press, and that is presumably not correct.

You only get something in Transfers during upload/download of models.
Trickles don\'t show up there.
And you\'ll only have something in Statistics will you have crunched for long enough to have something to show.
It\'s only a diagonal line anyway. BORING! :)

Doesn\'t seem to freeze if I close the graphic, and if I take a peek it seems to have moved along, so it is running OK.
BUT I still feel that there is some sort of connection problem. I can\'t seem to get into the Account Manager in BOINC but I am set up on the climateprediction site. Can you tell from the other end whether what I\'m doing is as expected ?

If I click on your name I can view your computer and results. That indicates that your old model crashed and there is a new one running, but the error code tells us nothing, unfortunately.

Nevertheless, it points to me as being a graphics problem. Try an upgrade of the graphics drivers, and a Windows update using the custom option for good measure (look at the optional updates).

Thanks, will try. Incidentally, I\'ve discovered that BOINC had set itself as my screensaver, and now I\'ve switched that off, the calculations seem to be proceeding without a hitch. Still not sure about Account Manager etc though.

Update and further question:
It\'s now been running all day without incident, with internet access. I\'ve seen a checkpoint happen, and I\'m past 10000 timesteps.

Can you tell me whether I\'m sending the proper results back please ? If you can assure me of that, I\'ll be able to leave you in peace.

There should have been a Trickle at Time Step 10,802, the Model\'s first \"call home\". All seems well. Best of luck.
