I have a WU that has been processed about 60% (resultid=5461501), and processing has suddenly become very slow. Previously it advanced about 1% every two days, but now it seems to take more than a week to get 1% forward. It also (naturally) sends much less trickles than before that 60% mark.

Is this something normal, or should I be concerned that something is not right with my computer or WU? (I have no other projects running, and the Task Manager shows the HDCM3 process using 95%~97% constantly).

Come to think of it: about two weeks ago I installed the final version of Windows Desktop Search 3.0. It is set to index only when I\'m not using the computer. Could this possibly be the culprit, interfering with my CPDN process during the night? I will try to turn it off and see if this changes anything...

No, it\'s not normal. The speed should be fairly constant.
Your idea about the Windows program sounds like a good source of the problem.
With BOINC constantly writing to the hd, it\'s possible that it\'s files are getting constantly indexed.

It seems that the trickles are succeeding, but why are they repeated so often? Could it have something to do with the Fortran errors that are also regularly occurring?

I have a bad feeling about this. Your model could be a \'looper\'. (Described here.)

The thing to watch to see if it is, is the day/month/year in the globe display, to see if it keeps repeating the same period of time.

The problem is fixed in the latest version, 5.15

Last registered trickle was 12th Nov, 13:11. If you see another one appear on the website, then it\'s not a looper. The \'real\' trickles are uploaded at approx 4th Dec each model year, but loopers won\'t get that far (i.e., they\'ll keep cycling around from the previous year\'s December 1st to some arbitrary date).

Ok, I have started taking notes of the model date. Currently it is around middle of December 2020. Will check again tomorrow.

All those \'exited zero status\' messages indicate a lot of reprocessing, on average 216 TS for each one. It adds up surprisingly quickly.

Possible case in point: A friend\'s A64 X2 4400+ had one of the Runs throwing a lot of those messages. (Only time I\'ve seen that. When it happens to me, both Models stumble.) I don\'t recall the number of days, but the completion percentages drifted apart surprisingly quickly, as if one model was treading water and the other was an Olympic swimmer. (Edit: If I recall correctly, the \'exited...\' messages didn\'t begin until the Models were well beyond the half-way point. Also, that machine finished two TCM and two SC Runs [or 4 TCM {my dodgy memory in operation} without issues.)

Both Models became \"loopers\" at about the same time (real time) and were given mercy killings. One died ~81%, the other ~70%. ... They started together.

Her machine is stable.

Overall, very curious.

Nothing new to report yet; the model has progressed to 62.75% and the date is May 2021, so I will have to wait until December comes around again.

No new \'exited\' messages so far.


P.S. I have uninstalled Windows Desktop Search 3.0, as it did not give me the results I wanted. I may try Google Desktop Search next.

And now it crashed with a \'file_xfer_error\' (error_code -161).

Do you think it\'s worth restarting from last weeks saved files, or will I just ask for more trouble...?

I\'m reluctant to recommend that a participant abort a Run; it\'s the participant\'s call. It all comes down to your willingness to invest a week without credit on the chance it will continue okay. That said, no one would fault you for bailing out of that troublesome Run.

If it were my Run, I\'d probably try to rerun from backup. If the \"exited zero status\" messages continued and progress was slow, I\'d abort the thing before the week was up, considering it a lost cause.

If you choose to abort it, all is not lost. The Restart Dump was uploaded at 40% and uploads were made at 50% & 60%.

Not an easy decision.

How about if you Suspend the model, (in the Tasks tab), and get a new model?
That way you\'ll be able to see if it was the model or your computer, without losing the work if it\'s the later?

Thanks for all the replies. I think I have to give up on that model; I have left it running over the weekend, and it started around 2020. When I checked next it was 2018, and later 2019. This Monday morning it was again 2019, but earlier than when I left Friday.

So it seems that I did catch a \"looper\". I\'ll keep the weekly backups I have of the model, but for now I am going to abort and start a new model.

Now you\'re certain that it\'s a looper because you\'ve seen the model date going back, after you\'ve aborted it I don\'t think there\'s any reason to keep its backups.

The data generated by your computer up to the start of the loop is still useful to the researchers.

The models being distributed now are apparently much more likely to self-abort if they turn out to be loopers, which is an improvement on the previous situation.

OK, a new model is now running with the 5.15 software.

The old model created some logs: stderr_um.txt, stdout_err2.txt, stdout_um2.txt, stdout_um4.txt, and stdout_um.txt; I wonder if they are of any value for the developers for diagnostic purposes? If not, I will ditch them.

And one last question: what can I delete from the climateprediction.net project folder? I\'m sure I can delete anything clearly related to the old model hadcm3lbm_94mz_05195182. I\'m also sure about anything with the old 5.08 apps.

And it\'s sure that anything with today\'s date needs to be kept.

However, there are a few items with a bit older dates - need I keep them?
