I recently downloaded a new model that came with the 5.15 software. Before that, clicking on the Menu Bar: Activity -> Suspend would suspend the task from processing, and status \'Activities suspended\' would appear.

Now with the 5.15 software, the status would also go to \'Activities suspended\', but the task would continue to process. I can see that on the CPU time counter, it would continue to increase. Also CPU time will continue on 100%, and two hadcm3 processes would continue to run.

Other programs, such as SETI 5.15 still stop when issuing Activity -> Suspend.

Is this a bug in CPDN 5.15? How else can I temporarily suspend CPDN, e.g. to take a backup?

Haven\'t seen this problem before. (My machines run 5.15 and always stop processing CPDN at that point [no activity] -- and then I exit boinc to make backups.)

Which version of boinc are you using? (I\'m using 5.4.9.)

Safest way to backup CPDN is for both CPDN and boinc to be shut down. Anything else risks files being out of sync. (As I understand it, suspended files are still active in the sense that they are [possibly] part in memory and [possibly] part in virtual memory. Unlikely they\'ll be part of the backup set in that case.)

An idle CPDN/boinc makes the entire folder available.

At one point I had a similar problem, although it was to do with the networking stack on my PC. I uninstalled a number of old VPNs and so forth and the problem went away.

Yes, very odd.
It shouldn\'t be anything to do with the new version of hadcm3.
Have you looked in Task Manager to see if there are any extra processes running?

And you MUST Exit from the lot (program and model), before copying.

I am running BOINC version 5.4.11, as I had with the previous model (with CPDN software version 5.08). The new behaviour started when the new model with the 5.15 version software started.

S@H (which is also v5.15) does stop correctly when suspending.

MikeMarsUK: what do you mean by \'network stacks\'?

It\'s a terribly arcane area I\'m afraid, without any easy way to look at it in Windows.

The TCP/IP configuration in \'network properties\', and also including anything which affects it. So the firewall, any VPNs (virtual private networks), and the operating system\'s driver layer. The TCP/IP software is layered, hence why it\'s referred to as a \'stack\'.

I had installed a couple of VPN clients to attach to the network at work, so I uninstalled these.

Thanks for the explanation. I do not have any VPN client installed on this machine.

But... I just observed more weirdness. I also run SETI@HOME from time to time; right now I do - just finishing one last WU of a bunch that has downloaded recently.

The CPDN process says status \'Preempted\'.
The S@H process says status \'Running\'.

But when I look at them (in the Tasks tab), I see them both running - counting up CPU seconds!

When I open the Task Manager I see both hadcm3transum_5.15_windows_intelx86.exe and setiathome_5.15_windows_intelx86.exe using about 45% CPU. (This is not a dual processor or hyperthreaded).

Update: that strange behavior of not halting the process when suspending has just changed. I suspend; it stops. This has changed when going over 4% of the new model. So all seems well now...

hello,
I\'m running cpdn for a while and I was at 17% when this problem apeared.
When cpdn is asked to suspend or switch task, it is still running and consuming CPU time. It is also affecting other projects by slowing then.
I\'m running this task also on other computers without any problem.

this is link to this task
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=6078795

I think it might by a bug in cpdn software.

My configuration
Laptop Toshiba, Intel Celeron M 1,6
OS Win XP
Boinc 5.4.11

If anyone can help, would by handy.

If there IS a bug, then it will be in the BOINC part, not cpdn.
Have you tried a reboot? This sometimes cures it.

Restart doesn\'t help. I\'m not working with computer for the first time. I thought about problem in communication between boinc and cpdn application. Boinc can see progress of application, but it can\'t affect behavior.
