It heat\'s over 85ºor more when Boinc runs over 3 or 4 minutes.

Some laptops have marginal cooling. Add to that, a load of internal dust accumulated over time. And, some people leave them flat on a desk or, worse, soft surface. When driven as hard as CPDN drives the CPU and hard disk, with poor air circulation inside the case, you get a hot machine.

Perhaps opening the thing (I don\'t know how because I avoid laptops like plague) and using compressed air (cans can be purchased from computer or electronics shops) to get rid of dust bunnies, especially those lurking in heat sinks, will help.

At least on the BBC side, participants were specifically cautioned against running the Model on laptops (though many people do so). I think the same warning is in the FAQ on the sign-up page (but won\'t stake my life on that).

Good luck with it.

By the way, boinc 5.8.8 has a means of \"throttling back\" CPU usage; that allows a bit of relief from heat build-up.

I use a few techniques, since my laptop gets hot and does a thermo throttle down, which slows my processing.

1: I got a laptop fan (USB plug-in unit that sits under the laptop to help cool).
2: Keep it clean, pretty well weekly.
3: Use the 5.8.8 at 90%. I get a better RAC now than at 100%.

Now do not be fooled by the % on the throttle for the software. It works on a 10 second interval. If you set it at 90%, you get 9 seconds at 100% then 1 second at idle. For 50% it is 1 second 100% and 1 second idle, etc. It works very well. That small amount of idle time makes a huge difference. During the summer time I will probably throttle even more.

Yes.

Make the changes on the website.
Stop BOINC.
Install over the current installation.
It should start off approximately where it stopped (at the last saved check spot).
