I have updated to BOINC 5.8.11. I simply run the update while the model was running. The original model which was already about 27% completed failed to restart and a new model has been downloaded.. Is this ok? Even if OK this is a bit disappointing.

NEVER update while BOINC is running.
This is like changing the engine in a car when it\'s running. Something\'s going to get damaged.

You\'ve lost the model, and can only get it back if you have been making backups.

OK, but for us dumb volunteers a little popup or two lines of instructions might help. I got this message saying I could update. I did not find any clear instructions on updating on the site and I thought BOINC would take care of itself.
Has all the work done so far been lost?

Actually it is normally safe to upgrade BOINC without stopping the previous version. However with the size of the models here at CPDN it is wise to stop the client, backup and maybe even suspend the CPDN project before the upgrade. Just to reduce the impact of problems if they occur.

Hola Propietario

In my signature is a link to essential info. In the Running the model README look at the top tips and in the Crashes README, link #5 by Mike.

I don\'t know what message you got - in BOINC? Did BOINC initiate the update, or did you download the installer from the website?

If BOINC initiated the update by itself, then it should really end its tasks, and shut down itself before updating itself, as hundreds of other programs do.

If it was a website download, then I would have thought it natural to shut the application down before updating it. But you are right, perhaps a little note at the download site would help some users...
