Hi

I have a dual boot system amd 3800+ with XP and Vista Ult.
I am running CPDN on both cpu\'s
When i boot into XP i see the processes running smooth and show a continues proces at both 100% cpu load
But when i boot into Vista for testing i found that the same boinc now runs erratic on the cpu load it jumps up and down from 5 % load up till 100 % and doesn\'t change in time either.
So looks to me lots of cpu cycles lost for CPDN.
Any know a solution to this problem

Your computers are hidden so we can\'t look at the specs - how much memory does it have? (Vista is very memory hungry and you may be seeing memory starvation).

My Vista Ultimate machine is running fine. Core 2 Duo T7200 2.0G chip. Have it running 1 CPDN model and 2 other projects. 2G memory, it sings along.

Some issues have been found if you allow BOINC to install under Program Files under Vista. Although this does not sound like that. As Mike stated, it might be memory.

Cpu Amd 64X2 3800+
Temps Full load on socket 41C, Core0 = 45C, Core1 39C
Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-Sli mainbord
I have 2 x 1 Gb of PC3200 2.5-3-3-8 memory modules in dual channel setup.
About 2,5 TB diskspace so this should not be the issue either.
Video Geforce 6800 GT
Watercooled system (cpu, video, drives)

Non other processes are running other then vista stuff.
The only difference i know of between the xp and vista install is the dual core optimizer on the xp setup

We need to look at the server web pages to see the details of what models you\'ve had and what happened to them. You\'ll need to change your preference to Show computers (not Hide computers), otherwise I don\'t see how we can help. When the problem\'s sorted out, you\'ll be able to change the preference again. I think your models are crashing, so we need to see the error codes etc.

I\'m sure the answer is going to be \'100%\', but just in case... what is the CPU percentage set to in general preferences / Simple View\'s preferences?

Spec of your 3800x2 looks fine, don\'t see any problems there.

The computer with Vista is the second one in your list. The models look fine and both have trickled today. The computer has 2Gb RAM.

How much RAM are you supposed to have for Vista Ult? Each model needs 512MbRAM, so that leaves 1Gb for Vista and whatever else the computer\'s being used for. I wonder whether that\'s enough? I know Vista needs 1Gb, but does Vista Ult need even more?

While you have Vista running, you could suspend one of the models (Click \'No new tasks\' for cpdn, once only, in the Projects tab of Boinc Manager before you do this). You could then look at the CPU % in Task Manager to see whether the situation is still erratic or better when only one model is running.

I still don\'t quite understand what you mean in your first post when you say that the CPU load \'doesn\'t change in time\'.

What i mean is that under xp the load on the cpu\'s is allways 100%
Not like under vista jumps from low to high cpu load
I know vista was power hungry but still 2 Gb memory should be enough
I try to see if i made an error with the installation off boinc itself
But untill now haven\'t got it running smooth at all

In your preferences, have you allowed the models to use 100% of CPU time, or a smaller %? If you allow 90%, I think the processor does 9 CPU cycles at 100% and then nothing for the tenth. But I imagine this happens much too quickly to see it with the human eye in Task Manager.

But I don\'t think this is applicable to you because you say you see 100% CPU when you use Vista. Check your preferences in any case.

How quickly does the CPU usage jump up and down?

It might be a good idea to make a backup and then reinstall boinc to see whether this makes any difference.

The BOINC throttle works with a one second time period, so it often shows up in the task manager.

I would bet on the problem here being disk access in some form.

Can you try setting \'network activity disabled\' temporarily in the Boinc manager (when running in Vista). There\'s a bug in the manager which can cause problems if there\'s anything at all iffy with the network, it\'s remotely possible that this is what you\'re seeing.

The cpu setting is 100% in preferences

1) Running one model does not change the erractic running

2) The jumps follow each other in several seconds about <1 to 2 seconds between the jumps, no other processes are showing much cpu consumption just between 0 to 2 % for some normal windows proces

3) I also gave the boinc proces as usual a cpu assigned to it, to see if that helped which made it less jumpy but still it keeps jumping up and down.

4) Going to reinstall boinc after i finished testing a smp program from folding@home on which our team is doing a stampede, which looks very promising for multi core cpu\'s.

I\'ve been running various versions of the BOINC client on Vista BETA and Ultimate. I do always install as a service because I don\'t need the screen saver.
I have had no issues with most all of the projects that I run (35) other than what has happened to most people (BURP).

HOW are you installing BOINC?

I recently built a dual-core system, running Linux, but I thought 1Gb would be enough for the two models! No way Jose!!!
Most of the time I only have about 25-50Mb of Free RAM.
I would definitely recommend 1Gb RAM per core/thread. It also goes without saying, that the faster the RAM, the better.

1GB should be plenty for two coupled models (only 100MB each). This is unlike SAP where they take up to 450MB each, and 1GB is a squeeze (but I am actually running a pair of SAPs in 1GB at the moment, with difficulty). What else was taking memory?

In the long run, I\'d say 1GB per core is a good idea for new PC purchases. Things are going to get much bigger soon.

I must agree on the memory i recently received the rma from ocz back :)
The new memory is outperforming the pc4400 memory even though its pc3200 mem.
On amd systems 2-3-2-5 timings gives best performance.
Second i was running with 1 GB memory but now with the 2 GB all is running smoother
BTW guys are you running 32 or 64 bit vista ultimate

If your computer is running short of memory under Vista you might want to try the ready boost feature contained in Vista.

My laptop has 1 GB of Ram installed. When I installed Vista Home Premium I noticed that my computer was slower to open things than under XP and was falling back on virtual memory. I added a 4GB flash drive and it solved the problem. The speed is back up and Vista is no longer thrashing the HD. It even seems to be running climateprediction faster than XP. Hope this helps
