Hi,

in the CPDN-Results in my account it is shown, that a WU is sent to me on 4 May 2007 20:44:54 UTC. But the BOINC Manager shows no WU, the log shows no entries about downloading the WU and in my data directory is no data of the WU.

Please help.

What has happen? What can I do?

Hi,

Sometimes the servers get confused and think that Boinc has successfully downloaded a WU when it hasn\'t. You can just ignore it.

Have you had any luck sorting out the crashing problem you were getting earlier?

You should have a message logged at around 4 May 2007 20:44:54 UTC (I guess that\'d be 22:44:54 in Austria) saying something like \"Requesting 66863 seconds of new work\"?

If so what is logged as happening after that request?

It\'s possible that a model was downloaded and crashed immediately.
Have a look in the Messages tab to see if this happened.
If you\'ve rebooted, look in the messages archive: stdoutdae.txt, which is in the BOINC folder.

Thanks for your answers. There are no model data downloaded at the mentioned time, so no model can crash. I have attached the log-lines from this time. It seems that only the application is downloaded, but no WU. I hope that will help. (Please ignore the e@h-lines, I added them for the full log in that timeslot)

I had a similar problem on April 26th, 2006. 69 WU were \"virtually\" sent to my computer, but never reached my harddisk. We discussed this in this thread with no solution. Maybe it is a nearly every year bug. ;-)

The problems from the other crash could not resolved. The WU isn´t on my computer. Of course my computer is now stable (testing with two instances of prime95 for about six hours (because of dual core) and five hours of gaming (Oblivion) without number crunching)

What BOINC version are you using?
There may be a problem there.

Hi Nowi

I\'ve had a look at the data for a lot of your models:

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/results.php?hostid=443604

I found the large number of virtual or phantom models from April 2006. Cpdn had a problem with phantom models again in October (you didn\'t get any) and it was a temporary server problem. Unfortunately we can\'t eliminate these phantoms from our web page list of models. Fortunately the phantoms do no damage and occupy no space on our own disk.

You\'ve had models crashing with a number of different error messages since December, and with error codes 1 and 161. Have you had the same version of boinc since December, or have you updated boinc since then?

I think some (maybe all) these model crashes are happening because you need to start taking certain precautions to keep your model(s) safe. For example, the 3rd model on the list sent to you on 2 May crashed a few hours later on 2 May with exit code 1 and the message \'scan - boinc_lockfile\'. Did you run an anti-virus scan on Wednesday evening without exiting first from boinc?

I suggest the following:

*If you have enough cpdn models (one or two), in your boinc manager projects tab highlight cpdn and click the No new work button, once only. The day you want a new model, click it again.

*Use the link in my signature to go to the cpdn READMEs.

*In the README called Running the model, look at the top tips which are essential and obligatory.

*In the README about avoiding model crashes I recommend these items:

--- #5 by Mike. This advice helps to avoid a lot of 161 errors

--- #1 by Les which is an easy method for backing up the complete contents of the boinc folder. So if you have a model crash, you can restore the backup and continue with the same model.(In the README about backups there is a selection of other methods.)

--- #6 by Thyme Lawn about updating your graphics card driver. This is good for the computer in general and MAY help to avoid some of the crashes with error code 1.

*If you haven\'t already disabled the screensaver, do this now. It can cause problems and slows down the processing of the model. You can still look at your model using the View graphics button in your boinc manager.

Other people may offer extra advice. Extra advice will be IN ADDITION to the precautions I\'ve recommended, not an alternative.

Hope that helps.

Hi mo.v,

thank you for your tips and comments. I have updated the boinc client in the time from december to may, but this is and was no problem. The crashing of the models on 2nd may was because of an instability of my PSU followed by an reboot. No the PSU has changed and the system is prime-stable!

Boinc started at log on, so it was impossible for me to recover the data from my backup, because boinc connected directly to the server to report the errors. As you see in my results I´m crunching for a long time without any problems, until my hardware PSU failure. I´m unhappy with that, especially from the lost scientific result and the lost processing time, too.

My problem is of cause no software instability. I keep my system actual. The hardware problem is solved. My only problem is to get WU from CPDN to crunch.

Of course I will read the readme mentioned by you!

Thanks again

Hi Nowi,

If you are by chance using version 5.9.7, there was a bug that causes the \"No app version for result: windows_intelx86 -1\" message.

It was reported here, and the fix will be in the next version.

Yes, at this time it had installed 5.9.7, but I immediately change back to 5.8.16.

Even if the model crash has already been reported to the server, you can still restore a backup. In fact, the majority of restores are probably made in these circumstances. However, the record of the crash will remain on your web page for the crashed-but-restored model, because the server doesn\'t forget. But this doesn\'t matter. The restored model will be accepted when it finishes.

For these code 1 errors, also make sure that when you need to turn the computer off

*first suspend the model using the Activity menu

*close boinc manager

*right-click on the boinc B icon (botton right of screen) and select Exit

*wait until the icon disappears

*then begin to shut down the computer

Ok, I didn´t know that a as crashed report model can be restored. Until now I thought that it is only possible do restore models after a software problem. If I had known that, I restored my models.

Thank you for this additional information.

But, I still get no WU from CPDN.

Hi Les, (and the other moderators)

I still get no new WU from CPDN. Last download of a Phantom WU was on 4 May 2007 20:44:54 UTC and so more than 40 Hours ago.

I have running Boinc 5.8.16 and E@H is running well.

What has happened? What can I do?

Check that in the boinc manager Projects tab, you are allowing new tasks for cpdn. It\'s what it says in the last column of the window that matters.

I assume that in the boinc manager Activity menu, you are allowing network activity?

I controlled it to be sure. As usual access to network is allowed without any restriction. There is no entry for CPDN in the project tab in column status.

I toggled the status for allowing new work and I only got this in the log: (Downloading of several picture files and not more)

I think you\'re also running Einstein? If you suspend Einstein in the Projects tab or your Einstein workunits in the Tasks tab, does that bring you more work from cpdn?
