I have been a long-time subscriber with successful uploads, but a few weeks ago my model STUCK at 27.83% complete. My system has been making progress with SETI and its screensaver is working fine.

My Climateprediction.net screen saver shows only an outline of our planet without rotation. I believe the screen saver functionality has been lost.

How do I kick start the system back into full operation?

If it\'s this model you\'re concerned about, it\'s a slab model. These do have problems with the graphics at phase changes and sometimes elsewhere (see this sticky). The cure is usually to exit from BOINC Manager and restart.

If the planet is blue (in temperature mode), then the model itself may have gone wrong. But if you restart BOINC Manager and post back first, that can be explored later.

By the way, it\'s quicker to run without the screensaver (about twice as quick). The graphics can still be seen from BOINC Manager when you need to. Of course, if you like the screen saver, then stick with it!

I will turn off the screen saver (thanks!), but I saw the problem first there.

The BOINC Manager says that the CPU time now is at 273:15:19, and seems to be increasing normally in the \"run always\" settings. Progress, however, remains at 27.83% and has been at that value for a very, very long time. The \"To complete\" value, however, is 631:50:01 and is actually INCREASING as well!

The screen saver planet is an outline as I had stated. The outline is composed of thin white lines and is fixed.

I have closed and opened BOINC Manager and restarted my computer on several occasions. Would a Reset be recommended?

A Reset will indeed cure the problem, by killing off that model and causing a new one to download.
Place the mouse pointer over the various BOINC buttons for a description of what they do, but DON\'T click a mouse button.

The description of the model could just indicate a display problem, and the model itself may be OK.
Use the Show graphics button in Tasks to display the model, and write down the day/month/year, the time and the timestep. The last two will be changing, so pick one.
Then have another look hour an hour later and see if these have increased, or appear to have gone backwards. Do this a few times. It may be looping. Description of this here, just down from the top.

I recorded the data as you suggested!

It does appear from the display that the model may be OK even though the percent complete is fixed at 27.83%. The model time behavior, however, is confusing in that it went forward and then backward in the following display data:

The data you\'ve collected shows that the model is looping. If the PC is running continuously, the model should not revert to an earlier time unless it encounters an error.

The last trickle from this model was 1 August. If the model has been running for a significant amount of the time between then and now, then it\'s a fair bet that it\'ll carry on looping for ever. In your situation I would abort the model (from BOINC Manager) and download another one. If the model was almost complete and you had a backup, then you might give it one chance from the backup ...

If, before downloading a new model, you set your account preferences, then you can choose what type of model to process (select \'Your account\' on the left of the message board screen and then select \'climateprediction.net preferences\'). You could then have a go at another 45-year slab model: with one of those under your belt, you could change your preferences again and try an 80-year coupled model.

I presume you now have no cpdn model in the Tasks tab of your boinc manager, or the model you had is still there but saying Ready to Report (in which case it will soon report to Oxford and disappear from boinc manager). To get a new model

* Make sure your internet connection is on

* In the Activity menu of boinc manager, select Allow network activity

* In the Projects tab of boinc manager, if necessary select cpdn and click the Allow new tasks button. (While the Status column says No new tasks, you won\'t get new workunits for that project.)

A new model should download.

Hi!

I am confused by your nomenclature. I do not have an Activity menu or a selection option of Allow network activity. A similar option under Commands is Network Activity Always Available.

Climateprediction.net is listed as a project on the Projects tab of my BOINC manager. I do not have a Status column under the Project tab, but I do have a Tasks column on the left side with buttons: Update, Suspend, No New Work, Reset Project, and Detach. I am wondering how I clear the No New Work button and if your \"Allow new tasks\" button is my Reset Project button.

In your reference to the message board, I saw that there is a BOINC Version 5.8.11. Mine is 5.2.13. Should I update to the latest version of BOINC before downloading a new model?

The menu options, names, and locations changes from one version to another. :(

1) \"Network Activity Always Available\" is the mentioned option name.
2) There should be a Status column in the Projects tab, on the far right.
It will be either blank, or say: \"Won\'t get new work\".
3) The \"No New Work\" button is a toggle. When clicked it will say \"Allow new Work\".
4) The Reset project button will do just this, killing all of the current program versions and models, and then re-downloading them.
Not a good choice if you only want a new model.

Note:
1) \"Work\" has been replace by \"Tasks\" in the newer versions of BOINC.
2) The 3 network options have been moved to a new menu section called Activity.

3) The column that you mention with all of the buttons, should be labelled Projects, not Tasks. (Which is the second column from the left.)

4) As there is a button labelled: \"No New Work\", you haven\'t turned off downloads. And the Status column in the Projects tab should be blank. (\"Turning off\" downloads is recommended as a precaution after receiving a model, to prevent the accidental download of further, unwanted, models.)
Futher, you should have automatically received a new model with this button in this \'position\', if Network option is also set to ... preferences, or ... always available.

5) You can get the newer version of BOINC if you wish, but note that it is now 5.10.13

If you can\'t have a new model, you can also try to detach and attach again to the project (attaching via the Wizard is now easy: it\'s in the tool menu)

You may have \'debt\' from running cpdn, so SETI needs to run for a while until this is paid back. After which BOINC will get a new cpdn model.

In the meantime, I\'d suggest that you get some more ram; you only have 256 Megs, and you should have at least 512 Megs to stop hard disk thrashing. (Constant use of the swap file.) 1 Gig is even better for smooth computer running.

Les, I\'ve just noticed that your computer only has 256Mb RAM (memory). This means that you are much more likely to succeed with a slab model than with a transient coupled one.

In your cpdn account options you can select which type will be downloaded to you. In the menu on the left of this page, click Taking part in cpdn, then Your Account. Click View or Edit ClimatePrediction Preferences, then click Edit at the bottom of the page. You should select the slab type whose name starts HadSM3. Not the type called HadCM3. Then click Update preferences at the bottom of the page. For this change to take effect you need to click the Update button in boinc manager.

Hi Les (Bayliss), I see we were thinking the same thing about the memory at the same time. I agree that adding an extra memory card would be an improvement for this computer. Extra RAM isn\'t expensive and adding it into the spare memory slot could be a do-it-yourself job for you or a friend. If one day you decide to do this, here\'s a little film that explains how to do it. There\'s a short advert before the explanation starts.
