I have been away from the project for a bit. The changover from one version to another was jsut messing with my head, so I took a step back until the dust settled. I reattached recently, both with my laptop and my desktop, and things are not quite right. On the laptop, it\'s fine. Looking at the task manager, I only see one process for the model, and rotates smoothly and the percentage creeps up predicably. The Desktop, however, is another story. It has a faster processor, but less RAM, only 512K. (I know, I know) I selected the slab model, as I assumed that would require less processing power, as there isn\'t an engine for the seas, unless I interpreted wrongly. However, it runs VERY slowly, rotation is jerky, and takes HOURS for one revolution. The percentage take days for it to go up ONE point, and if I look in the task manager, I have TWO processes running: hadsm3_5.05_windows_intelx86.exe & hadsm3_um_5.06_windows_intelx86.exe simultatiously. As they both are processor hogs, they seem to be getting in each other\'s way. Does it assume I have a dual processor, or something? I certainly do NOT. As much as I want to help, I don\'t think I can as things are now. None of my projects will finish before a deadline at this rate. Can someone suggest a fix, or at least explain what\'s going on? |

There SHOULD be 2 processes - one for the modelling, and one for the graphics display. Your slow rotation, and the jerkiness may be due to the graphics card and/or driver. Some of them aren\'t too good with the model. Updating the driver from the graphics card maker\'s website may help. If you\'re using the model\'s screensaver, this can lead to a loss of a lot of processing power. Other than that, it sounds as though you have a \"slow processing iceball\", but this usually happens latter in the modelling, and you haven\'t even returned one trickle yet. There are 2 threads in the Number Crunching section about the \"iceball\" worlds. Someone else may have some ideas, so hang in there. |

There SHOULD be 2 processes - one for the modelling, and one for the graphics display. You got me. I looked again at the laptop, and there were two processors. *sigh* Your slow rotation, and the jerkiness may be due to the graphics card and/or driver. Some of them aren\'t too good with the model. I tried it, and it worked. The jerkiness is gone, things run smoothly. I don\'t know why I didn\'t think it through more fully before posting, but I honestly didn\'t think about the video driver. I mean, I\'ve been running it awhile with no OTHER problems. *duh* Anyway, it seems to be working, or at least it\'s smooth, now. We\'ll see when I get a trickle up. Thanks |

The model will run faster if you disable the model screensaver and view your globe from time to time using the boinc manager view graphics button. Cpdn news |
