I\'ve seen some posts suggesting CPDN with Boinc doesn\'t work with these OS\'s. Where can I find the official statement concerning this? |

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/tech_faq_boinc.php There you go.
John Keck -- BOINCing since 2002/12/08 -- |

Bit back-to-front but this page only mentions Win2k, WinXP and WinME out of the Windows family - WinME is supposed to be supported but there is some difficulty with BOINC 4.05 under WinME and some systems won't run the CPDN project v4.03 under WinME either. Carl, one of the developers, has stated on this messageboard that Win98 is unlikely to be supported in the future. |

Thanks for the replies. I'm up to BOINC 4.07 and still no joy with WinME. Just going to scratch any hope of CPDN with this OS. |

Oh well, forget about WinME being supported, Carl has just now officially removed support for it both in that post and the tech FAQ. :( |

sorry, but it's just Tolu & myself to try and figure out this bizarre "small console problem" in Win98 & ME & NT4 and there's just too many other more important things. Win98/ME/NT4 were less than 4% of all completed models and it wouldn't be prudent for us to spend much more time trying to debug these older platforms when we have a lot to do with Linux & Mac's, the sulphur cycle, coupled model, etc. We encourage Win98 & ME users (who don't want to go with Linux or upgrade to Win2K or XP) to stick with the "classic CPDN" Windows client, which will be kept running for years and years. |

Yeah, maybe I didn't phrase that too well originally Carl, it wasn't intended to be hyper critical of you guys, I know you're busy with important stuff - I doubt the loss of WinME machines will make any much difference to overall numbers although there are doubtless a lot of Win98/SE/ME machines altogether. The number of models completed by them is doubtless so few because they're all slow(ish) machines anyways. ;) Marion is still happily crunching on her classic CPDN model. :) |

Hah, who said Win98 machines couldn't run CPDN - checkout this machine's RAC..! ;) |

Possibly a machine merge and it's lost track of the trickles from the other one ... ... or is it a case of I spy some of the missing credits ;) Join us here |

You will often find it running on some of the very latest hardware - owned by people who put their own systems together (easy to do) and need "legacy" compatibility with Windows software that won't run on Linux via WINE. I mainly run Linux (6 systems)....but I have one Win98SE box for games (my daughter) and I had a second one for a wireless card that had an unstable linux driver - and CAT5 ethernet wasn't an option for that system. I own one copy of WinXP Home - and it has spent 90% of the past 3 years on the shelf. |

I haven't been running CPDN on Windows very much because I don't keep my machine on for 24 hours a day, but the crunching I've done on Windows (classic CPDN) has been on Win98 SE and there have been no problems. Both two runs I've done have been full runs, and there have been no stability problems for which the cause would have seemed to be CPDN. The 3rd run is underway but is not likely to be finished anytime soon because, well, yes, I also have it around just for some gaming purposes (and previously CPDN) and nowadays I run GNU/Linux 90% of the time. So, personally I won't miss Win9x support in BOINC ClimatePrediction, but interestingly my 98 system didn't seem to have any problems with the large CPDN classic application. |
