Every time my computer gets to work on a WU, it freezes. It will go through 5-10 timesteps before it does, then my entire computer locks up, and I have to reboot. I\'m running S@H using boinc, and I have no problems.

if you're overclocked too much for CPDN that can happen.

I have the problem too and worse. I just joined and attached the project (along with SETI@home which is currently down with no unit) yesterday. After a few minutes running the CP alone, my system froze. After reboot and started up system for a few minutes later, it froze again. It went on like this until after the 4th reboot, my system failed to boot up due to C:WINNTSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM corrupted and I had to reinstall the system. Then, I reinstalled BOINC and CP client and again it froze my system after a few minutes. I had to detach the project for good on this system.

My system is a Toshiba Tecra 8100 597MHz laptop with 256MB RAM, Win2K SP4, 1.8GB available disk space, VM set at 512-1024MB, no overclock (possible? not on my company's laptop). Had no problem with SETI@home client.

I am also in a similar situation. I have a water-cooled athlon 64 3000 running at standard clock speeds ( did water cooling for silence ). Left the temp monitor up and system frozes while still at only 41C. WinXP SP2. 1GB Kingston HyperX RAM running at SPD. No overclock. As with others, no issues with BOINC Seti runs.

This is running the GUI version. I have the cli running now to see if it has the same issue.

There is a known issue with versions earlier than 4.08 (in alpha testing now). It should be fixed with 4.08.

I have been seeing this since BOINC 4.05....through 4.06 &amp; now in 4.08. CPDN seems to be the only thing that causes her to freeze, at least when I've been able to look @ BOINC just before she freezes. I, too, am not overclocking.

I'm running BOINC gui 4.08 on the following:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 5.1.2600 SP1 Build 2600
ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X 2.0 Deluxe motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ running @ ~1984 Mhz
BIOS Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS A7N8X2.0 Deluxe ACPI BIOS Rev 1007, 10/6/2003
SMBIOS Version 2.2
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)"
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
Total Virtual Memory 3.40 GB
Page File Space 2.40 GB

The last time she froze was while running 046m_000030412_0 using hadsm3 version 4.03.

I'm going to try running her w/ a few log_flags set and see what it catches. To whom/where can I send that log (assuming it will have helpful information)?

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing this annoyance removed. ;)

The (good?) thing about this bug is that it doesn't take long to manifest. I tried running her w/ some log_flags set, here are the flags I set:

task
state_debug
task_debug
time_debug
measurement_debug
guirpc_debug

Here is the stderr.txt output:

2004-09-10 15:43:51 [---] LOG_FLAGS::parse: unrecognized:
2004-09-10 15:43:51 [---] LOG_FLAGS::parse: unrecognized:
2004-09-10 15:43:51 [---] LOG_FLAGS::parse: unrecognized:

The stdout.txt doesn't seem to have logged anything unusual, though I can send that to a dev if it would help...is there something else I can set so that she'll give more useful debugging info? Running her w/ Dr. Watson and Dependency Walker has not been fruitful...they don't have time to catch anything b/c the computer is frozen...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'm going to run other projects until this is cleared up...

If you're running a 2500+ at 1984MHz then you <i>are</i> overclocking it - Desktop 2500+ is spec'd to run at 11x166.6 for 1833MHz, Mobile 2500+ is spec'd to run at 14x133.3 for 1866MHz.

That said, pretty much any 2500+ should run quite happily at 2.0GHz and more, although some may require a slight boost in core Voltage...

I stand corrected. :) I do know that this machine has been through a large number of 24 hr+ stress tests and made it through without error, with the exception of CPDN. :( Anyone know what is causing this &amp; why 4.08 was supposed to fix it? Thanks for the help...

I hope 4.08 fixes the issue for others, but it did not for me :(

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help isolate this issue ( debug code, logs, whatever ). I hate to detach, but I gotta have my comp.

Send me as full a description in an email, and I will forward it on to the developers. I can be reached at jm7 at acm dot org. I have modified my address in the hopes of reducing the chances of a spam bot finding it.
