It look like all of your tasks are getting the following errors thalena
18:59:50 (3768): Can\'t acquire lockfile (32) - waiting 35s
19:00:25 (3768): Can\'t acquire lockfile (32) - exiting
19:00:25 (3768): Error: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x20)
I\'ve only seen those messages when an application gets orphaned (had it myself with another project\'s beta application yesterday). Based on your task list it looks like you had the problem on 25th January and again on 19th February. Since the second one your system has been allocated and failing a single task on each work request. The easiest way to remove the file locking would be to reboot your system.

I\'ve rebooted twice, tried detaching from the project and reattaching several times, and can\'t get it working. The only thing I haven\'t tried is detaching, rebooting and reattaching in that order. I can certainly detach now and wait for my next reboot and then reattach to see if I can fix it that way.

If you can post the messages (in the file stdoutdae.txt or stdoutdae.old in your BOINC data directory) around the time the second task failed on 19th February and on your most recent failure it might help us work out what\'s causing the problem.

Hello! I\'ve recently received a message concerning errors with the project due to misconfigurations in my BOINC client.Any help would be valuable so i can contribute! Thanks in advance. - Andreas
Something is causing all of your tasks to fail before they\'ve accumulated any CPU time Andreas. Check that your anti-virus program hasn\'t quarantined the project\'s applications (currently hadam3p_6.14_windows_intelx86.exe, hadam3p_um_6.14_windows_intelx86.exe, hadsm3_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe, hadsm3_se_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe and hadsm3_um_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe). If you are running Norton Internet Security follow the instructions here.
If it\'s not an AV problem please post the messages recorded in the file stdoutdae.txt (in your BOINC data directory) on any of the task failures.

Those crash some automatic software builds that I try to use, so I would rather not install them for the moment. I wonder why you need 32-bit. I am not sure when I will get back to this thread (and I see no way to be notified, so you might want to email me,) but my computer may be off after tomorrow for the rest of this week anyway.

You can subscribe to the thread. But then you will get notifications for every response. Better you should enable e-mail notification of Private Messages in

If members enable email notification of private messages in their account this is an excellent idea. For everybody. It\'s disabled by default. The moderators can\'t see members\' email addresses so private messages are our only way of contacting people personally.

It lools like CPDN isn\'t the only project which requires the 32-bit compatibility library David. You\'re getting the same error message on Einstein, QMC (but the qasino application runs OK), Spinhenge and SZTAKI Desktop Grid.

The error listed for those failures is: Invalid access to memory location
I tried a Google search on this error, which provided a fairly long list.
The ones near the top from social.answers.microsoft.com may provide a clue, but if not, there\'s lots of others to look at.

For the PC that Mo linked to, I\'m seeing \"CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied.\" in stderr. The probable cause according to the BOINC FAQ is a firewall or anti-virus/anti-malware program. See the link below for possible solutions.

Hi Krambock
Apologies that no-one has replied before now.
The problem computer is here. All its tasks, whether HadAM3P or HadSM, are crashing immediately with the messages:

Which Antivirus does this computer have please?
Could not launch model process. Last Error=193
indicates an invalid application. Please check whether your antivirus has quarantined any of the CPDN programs. Post back to tell us because there are other possible causes.

Thanks for the reply. I\'ll install the 32-bit compatible libraries as soon as I can. (We had a power outage on Friday and it fried the server I need for that system. Hopefully it will be accessible today!)
As soon as I get this done I\'ll let you know.
Thanks!

Just got an email re failure
\"Your computer (host # 989345) described below appears to have a misconfigured BOINC

By the looks on the thread here sometimes antivirus might be the issue. Have set bionic as trusted program now and so it is not monitored by av(Kaspersky IS 2010). Have also detached and reattached climate prediction on bionic and rebooted. Anything else I need to do?
Thanks,

Hi Chris
Looking at a few of the failed models on your account page, the error is: CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied. (In stderr out)
This is most likely a permissions problem with the BOINC folders.

Hi Chris
To give you a better idea of what\'s been happening to your recent models:
Here\'s the computer\'s CPDN web page.
Here\'s the most recent page of its model list.
Here\'s a sample model. Click on stderr out to see the model\'s messages.
I\'m glad you\'ve posted because that looks like a really nice computer. By the way, a lot of people who have received the same misconfiguration email as you have unfortunately not yet posted.
In the Boinc FAQs Jorden has posted advice about your specific error here.
I don\'t think your problem is related to your Boinc installation. You currently appear to have Boinc 6.6.36. You had the same version when you successfully ran this model back in Dec - Jan so your Boinc looks fine. Something else must have changed on your computer after you ran that model.
In fact, look at this page in your models list. There was a period from Oct - start Feb when the computer had no problems. But before and after that you get the same errors.
Please check on the other possibilities mentioned by Les and the FAQ then post back.

Hi Chris
Looking at a few of the failed models on your account page, the error is: CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied. (In stderr out)
This is most likely a permissions problem with the BOINC folders.
Ok, changed the permissions for the bionic folders. Anything else I need to do? |

I\'ve allowed 1 result per day to your machine so that we can see if that\'s worked. |

I am wondering if the problem I have is more based on me not shutting down boinc before I shut down my computer. At the beginning, I used to leave my system on for days at a time and so it had a lot of free processing time tostart and finish jobs. These days it might be on for a few hours idle each week. Could me not shutting down boinc first be the issue? |
|
|
|
|
|
No That can\'t be the issue because I\'ve always done that. Interesting to note I have SETI on BOINC as well and have no issues with them. What makes climateprediction different?
Had an issue with a download of a new task same error as before. I reset the project and got a new job and now it is running. We\'ll see if it submits in the future.
Thanks for the prompt responses Milo

From the stderr output on the results webpages for the crashed models, it appears that you need to install 32 bit compatibility libraries on your 64 bit linux. A sticky at the top of the Linux forum has more info.

Hello, Got a misconfigured message too. I had a bunch of pending system updates, so did that and got updated BOINC client pieces. Projects like Milkyway restarted fresh.
I also manually added the gcc lib32 runtime libraries, but not sure what exactly might still need to add for CPDN.
My stderrdae.txt file was cleaned up on the reboot, so I\'m not sure what
the exact problem was at this point. And I don\'t see it on this website.
Running Ubuntu x64 server.

Here is a list of tasks for that computer.
Here is one of the crashed tasks. If you click on the \"+\" symbol next to the stderr out label, you will see one of the messages as \"execv: No such file or directory\" which is usually indicative of the lack of 32 bit compatibility libraries. This entry in the BOINC wiki talks about the need for these 32bit libraries for some applications and what files may be needed. |

Could you please go into your account (Click on Taking part in CPDN in the blue menu on the left here and you\'ll see a submenu with your account). In the ClimatePrediction preferences of your account could you unhide your computer(s) at least for a week or two. This will allow us to check easily that the problem computer can now start and run models.

Hi Danny
Thank you for posting.
You have two computers listed and I think they both have the same problem. Models cannot start on these computers.
On computer 1067547 a typical task is model 11296994. Click on + beside stderr out to see the messages. It failed with exit code -185 and \'CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied. (0x5)\'.
If you look at computer 1040561 then click on its tasks and select any of them you see the same exit code and messages.
In the Boinc FAQs Jorden explains a fix for this error here. Could you please try his suggestions on both computers. If this works on the computer that can still receive tasks and a new model can start, I am sure that Milo will then allow tasks for the second computer.
Please post back and tell us when you have done this.

REMINDER
If you have received the email we can only help you to solve the problem if you post.
Most of the computers that have crashed a lot of climate models are very nice! Most of the solutions to problems are not very complicated!
Just click on the \'Post to thread\' button at the bottom. You may need to log in before you can post. Say for example \'I have received the email about computer number [give us its number which is in the email]. What should I do?\'
When you think you have corrected the problem please post again to tell us. Milo will then allow your computer to download models again.

G\'day, I got the e-mail about a misconfigured computer.
Here is the link quoted for my computer
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=834157
I am not really sure what the problem is, so don\'t know where to start looking. I upgraded boinc and moved the data files to a drive with more space (it was preventing other projects from loading)
When I upgraded boinc it created a new host on all projects. it immediately tried to start this project again, I have suspended it for now.
This is the new ID for this cpu

Sorry about the delayed response to your mail, I don\'t check it often.

Dave512,
The first error you received was on a task downloaded on Jan 1, that crashed on Feb 1. It crashed with exit code 185 and all tasks since then have crashed immediately with that code. Within in the stderr listing on those result pages, it says \"Can\'t get shared memory segment name: shmget() failed\". The BOINC FAQ for that exit code says
ERR_RESULT_START -185
This is an error that will occur:
- if BOINC couldn\'t start the application
- if files are missing
- upon catch of other error returns
- on nonzero exit or signal
- if exceeded resource limit
- as catch-all for resume/start errors
The timing of your first problem is close to coincident with when some antivirus software (AVG among them) misidentified one of the climateprediction.net applications as possible malware, and quarantined it. What antivirus software is installed on that PC? Updates to AVG appear to have fixed that problem. With a reinstallation of BOINC, new cpdn applications would have been downloaded and if your antivirus software is playing well, it could start working again. I would let the model you downloaded run and see what happens. |
|
|
|
|
|
I have avg running so that could be it.
I think I disrupted the file transfer when I suspended the task, I have reset the project so will probably have a failed task already. I have also requested no new tasks for now so that if this one fails it wont clog up your system.
Thanks for the reply

Dave\'s computer is here. Its Boinc upgrade was clearly a success and the new model has trickled three times.
Don\'t worry about that model download failure; everyone has one of these from time to time. I think you could allow new tasks for CPDN now and let both cores work on models if you want to. Keep an eye on what\'s happening though.
It would probably be a good idea to update your AVG.

Hi Barry
Normally, the stderr out for each of the models shows what has gone wrong, but not in your case. So I did a Google using: \"Exit status -226\".
This produced a few threads, mostly from about a year ago, and on several projects.
This post from Einstein may explain it:
The task failures seem to be indeed a problem with the less than 100% setting of CPU time used, since Exit status -226 (from your STDERR log) translates to
ERR_TOO_MANY_EXITS -226
An application has exited prematurely (unexpectedly) more than 99 times without generating a checkpoint, so giving up on that task.
(quoted from BOINC FAQ Service)
You don\'t say which version of BOINC you had before, or if you were using less than 100% of processors, but that may have been the cause of the crashes.

Hi Barry
Here\'s the computer.
Clicking on the tasks shows that this computer has done sterling work for CPDN in the past including successful 160-year HadCM models. But you can see from the tasks pages that since about October 2009 all the models have been failing with either -226 errors as Les says (too many exits) or -185 errors (create process failed & access is denied). I suspect that the cause of both may be the same. The models can\'t get started or can\'t reach the first checkpoint. For each model you need to click on stderr out to see its messages.
As Geophi said above to another member with the -185 error, the Boinc FAQ says for this error:
ERR_RESULT_START -185
This is an error that will occur:
- if BOINC couldn\'t start the application
- if files are missing
- upon catch of other error returns
- on nonzero exit or signal
- if exceeded resource limit
- as catch-all for resume/start errors
It suggests a computer reboot. I don\'t believe your computer hasn\'t been rebooted since last October so that doen\'t help.
But the -226 \'too many exits\' message is like the older one saying \'exited with zero status & no finished file\'. Here\'s the Boinc FAQ about that with Jorden\'s advice.
* He mentioned AVs blocking the model. You need to get both Boinc folders into your AV\'s trusted zone/excluded from scanning.
* As has been mentioned above, the AVG antivirus has caused problems for many members as Les said here. The problem may not only have been with uploads. If you have AVG please update it.
* At least one member with constant model starting problems has found that a complete reinstall of Boinc fixed the problem. As this computer has no useful CPDN work on it I\'d uninstall its current Boinc before reinstalling (Start > Settings > Control panel > Add and remove programs). There are two Boinc folders.
When you\'ve checked the AV settings and reinstalled Boinc please post back and let us know because Milo will have to allow your computer to download models again ie reset its daily quota. We\'ll then see whether the suggestions work.
Barry, until this problem is fixed it would be useful if you could unhide your computers by editing your CPDN account. Then if by chance the Boinc reinstall gives your computer a new ID number as happened to Dave512 who posted above we\'ll still be able to find its web page easily.

I have completely uninstalled BOINC and the install folders. I have also changed the hide computer setting to show them. I will download the newest BOINC client again and install it. Having done all that I now see this system is getting a spoolsv.exe error. I don\'t know if this could be related but I am going to do a repair of Win XP-SP3 - to see if that will fix it since a system restore didn\'t help. It depends on the exact error, but the most likely cause is a corrupt or incompatible printer driver.

That\'s looking good, Barry. I hope you\'ll soon get the printer problem fixed too.
It seems as if your models are now getting past the first checkpoint which they couldn\'t previously. If I were you I\'d keep an eye on those models when possible. We should all keep an eye on HadSM graphics a couple of times a week anyway just in case they develop the iceworld problem with graphics of one colour only. If this happens it will be an error in the model, not the fault of the computer.
I see that the reinstall also seems to have created a new computer record for you. Here\'s your list. #3 looks like the old ID with the errors and #2 (1070796) is its new ID.
You may wish to merge the two computer records but I\'d wait at least a couple of weeks before doing this to check that everything is working well and trickles are uploading.
Thanks for taking the time to fix the problem. It would be helpful to us if you could leave your computers unhidden for as long as possible as we need to see whether the advice we give does work.

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1026829
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/results.php?hostid=1026829

Cliquez sur Your account.
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/server_status.html

Hi,
I\'ve recieved an email with regards to a misconfigured BOINC installation.
Without any further information I\'ve uninstalled and reinstalled the BOINC application.
Can you tell me if A) my problem has been fixed now or B) if you know what the problem is and I\'ll resolve it by following your instructions.
Thanks |

Hi Dregnet, welcome to the forum.
Here\'s an active link to the computer\'s CPDN web page:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1068093
You can see that Milo, the project admin, has set its daily quota to -1 which means the computer can\'t download models at the moment. At soon as you say you\'ve fixed the problem Milo will reallow the quota.
If you click on the link to Tasks at the bottom of the computer\'s web page, then click on any of the tasks and on a task\'s own web page click on + beside stderr out you\'ll see the error messages your models have crashed with. Eg this task:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=11406272
The significant phrase is CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied. (0x5). It means something is preventing access to the model\'s files. Probably your firewall or your AV.
There\'s an explanation in these FAQs:
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=448&sessionID=81c20a76df6aa5846bc136c23eb79620
If you can check that please let us know. Thanks for posting.
Edit: Don\'t disable your firewall or AV while connected to the internet. It\'s usually possible to change their settings while they\'re running.

It seems I have a problem. Please advise
It seems that your computer has the problem described in this thread: Exit status -2. Last error = 193.
Before approximately 20 February 2010, your machine was running models normally: since that time there has been a problem in which BOINC cannot start properly because of Windows path handling. This problem may be affecting other applications on your computer and not just BOINC (e.g. some services), so it is well worth fixing.
Have a look at that thread and if you need any further advice then post back here. When you post back to say that the problem is fixed then Milo will re-enable the downloading of models to that computer. |

OK, so it seems that I didn\'t understood how to fix the problem. I read the specified thread and there were 2 solutions described:
1. Complicated ... move the boinc data to some path without spaces in it, edit some registries, edit some xmls. ... which I won\'t do.
2. Easy ... select FAMOUS and wait until this kind of tasks are started, ... which I did.
If somebody can provide some more help it will be welcomed.
Note: I also upgraded my boinc client to the latest version.

1. Complicated ... move the boinc data to some path without spaces in it, edit some registries, edit some xmls. ... which I won\'t do.
There is an easier way of doing this:
1. Uninstall BOINC.
2. Move the remaining BOINC folder to, for example, C:\\BOINC.
3. Re-install BOINC to that location.
The problem arises because BOINC tries to start an application but finds something else instead. Another solution therefore is to find what BOINC is trying to start and remove it. This -2/193 problem affects only a small number of BOINC installations: in other words, most BOINC installations work fine even when installed to the default location (which includes spaces). So, the problem is not the spaces in the Windows path, it\'s that something has \"got in the way\". In the case of your machine that \"something\" appeared at about 20 February, so you might be able to remember whether anything was done to the machine at that time.
For example, if the normal BOINC path is C:\\Program Files\\BOINC, then you must not have a file called C:\\Program on your machine, otherwise BOINC will try to start that instead. As I mentioned in my earlier post this may affect other applications as well - it\'s not an intrinsically BOINC problem - though BOINC/CPDN haven\'t worked around the problem as they could have done. Future applications will not have this problem.

Hello,
Moved C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Application Data\\BOINC do C:\\BOINC\\DATA. Reinstalled BOINC to C:\\BOINC, using the new dir for data. Everything looks OK. Could you please enable my host?
At some point in the past I started to use gridrepublic as my account manager. It could be around 20 February, but I cannot be sure. Maybe this caused the problem? If it\'s worth it, could be investigated.

Your computer was very reliable until 29th March Jindrich.
Your last successfully completed task was hadsm3fub_jtjb_006448801_1 on 24th using BOINC 6.4.5 (click on the \'+\' by stderr out to expand the error messages).
famous_r172_1199_200_006632681_2 stopped returning trickles on 26th and was reported as a -226 error on 29th. Every task since then has failed immediately with the same error. BOINC generates that error when an application terminates 100 times without reaching the next checkpoint. The same thing is happening on SETI and Einstein.
That problem is usually associated with applications being quarantined by an antivirus program, but your first failure shows that BOINC had been upgraded to 6.10.18 since your previous success. That could point towards a permissions problem in the BOINC projects directory (particularly if you installed BOINC as a service). Uninstalling and reinstalling BOINC should fix any permission problems (your BOINC data directory won\'t be affected).

Your computer is having the same problem on Cosmology@home.
Your first CPDN task (hadam3p_mrqn_1998_2_1006527809_0) was downloaded on 3rd December 2009 and was progressing well until it reported with the error CreateFile error 2 when trying set file time after 27 days.
Every task downloaded since then has had the CreateProcess() error Les mentioned, and I\'d agree with his idea that it\'s a permissions problem. I\'d go further and suggest that it\'s probably associated with an upgrade to BOINC 6.10.18 (particularly if you installed BOINC as a service). Uninstalling and reinstalling BOINC should fix any permission problems (your BOINC data directory won\'t be affected).

Hi,
I believe I\'ve found the problem with my AV.
I\'m using Kaspersky and it decided to put the following files into \"untrusted\" group so they were blocked:
- hadsm3_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe
- hadam3p_6.14_windows_intelx86.exe
I\'m hoping that since I\'ve added these to into the trusted group everything should be fine now.
p.s. my antivirus says there they are missing its digital signature hence why its been blocked.
Thanks

All of your HADSM3 tasks are generating the error CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied. (0x5) Barry.
As your computer can run HADAM3P tasks that would suggest that your anti-virus program has quarantined one (or more) of the following processes for HADSM3:
- C:\\ProgramData\\BOINC\\projects\\climateprediction.net\\hadsm3_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe
- C:\\ProgramData\\BOINC\\projects\\climateprediction.net\\hadsm3_se_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe
- C:\\ProgramData\\BOINC\\projects\\climateprediction.net\\hadsm3_um_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe
You\'ll need to override the quarantines and possibly restore the affected files. If possible you should also set up a scan exclusion for C:\\ProgramData\\BOINC (that\'ll prevent any BOINC project application from being quarantined in future). If that\'s not possible you\'ll need to watch out for AV quarantining of future application versions.

Hola Marta, bienvenida
[Usual advice for Access denied problem.]

My computer (host # 992673) was crashing models, but I believe I have corrected the situation. Kaspersky AV saw the WUs as changed applications so blocked them. It was crashing models of other BOINC projects also. I added an exception to Kaspersky several weeks ago that has solved the problem, but I forgot to post here. If someone could help me get additional WUs, I would greatly appreciate it. Thx. -c |

Hi Spizz
Thanks for posting.
This is computer 992673. I'll ask Milo, the CPDN programmer who looks after this, to reenable your computer's quota. Keep an eye on this thread for a week or 10 days please because it there are any follow-up posts this is where they'll be.

Spizz, Milo reactivated your quota last night UK time. The computer later downloaded three models one after the other. Here they are.
Two models crashed soon after with the -185 code and Access is denied. You can see this message if you go to a finished/crashed model's page and click + beside stderr.
I think something's still blocking these models. Could you please check you've done everything Jorden says in his FAQ for this error. You may also need to check on your firewall.

At the moment the CPDN server's version of Boinc may only give you one model (because of the quota of 1) per day. It should scale this up for the number of cores but it doesn't for every computer. Anyway, you have a new model so we'll see how it does. If it gets as far as a trickle it will mean your extra exclusion may have fixed things.

mo.v - Thanks for your patience. The last WU got caught by Kaspersky, which reports the WU has no description or application information. Anyway, I have now excluded the programdata folder from Kaspersky entirely, so it should not disturb anything in that folder. If that doesn't work, I may be out of ideas. I hope you all would be kind enough to give me another WU tomorrow to test my fix. Thanks again. -c |

No problem at all. Nobody can guarantee to find a fix at once and sometimes there's more than one problem. You fix one and the other then gets its chance to crash a task.
Milo reenabled a quota of 1. That's 1 per day (I think your time). At the moment the server's Boinc isn't always scaling this up for the number of cores so that may be a single model per day. Each time a model crashes Boinc reduces the quota by 1.
Don't believe what the computer's CPDN web page says about what the quota is. Another peculiarity of the server's current Boinc is that it doesn't show us what quota it's using. And some other members have what looks like good evidence that the server's Boinc is using the wrong secret quota.
So if the computer crashes a model it's probably a waste of time trying to fetch a replacement until after your midnight. And then you're unlikely to get more than 1.
If you have difficulty fetching a new model you should suspend the tasks from other projects and edit the additional work buffer (Advanced > preferences > network) to its maximum of 10 days. Then update CPDN and hope you're in luck.
Before restarting the tasks from other projects you may want to reduce the buffer again so the computer doesn't get swamped with too much work.
That's what we're suggesting to everyone whose computer has a hard time persuading the server's Boinc to send enough work. I hope Milo can fix this defective Boinc version soon.

Good. I see that your models are trickling.
These are FAMOUS models some of which have very extreme parameter values. This causes some of them to crash with exit code 22 and error messages (in the stderr +) containing either INVALID THETA or NEGATIVE PRESSURE. If this happens to you, don't worry as it wouldn't be the fault of your computer.

Hello. I think that computer is on holiday and it is very difficult to me to restart the work.

|
I guess that this is the computer that you mean.
As you can see near the bottom of the page, the Maximum daily WU quota per CPU has been set to -1. This is to prevent it from wasting more models.
If you click on the number of models alongside this, you get this page, which is the first of several listing these models.
Now click on the first column, for any of the failed models, and you get the page for that model.
Finally, click on the + sign alongside stderr, and you'll see the error message for why it failed.
Permissions usually means that BOINC and/or the model doesn't have permission to write to that folder, so it can't save some data that it needs to.
So you need to work out why there's a permissions problem and fix it.
Then post back here, and the project people will re-enable your computer so that you can get another model to try.

Marta, a typical crashed model is here. If you click on Stderr+ you will see extra error messages. They say: CreateProcess() failed - Acceso denegado. (0x5).
There is a Boinc FAQ about this exact error. It's here. Your antivirus or firewall (or both) is blocking Boinc and every ClimatePrediction model. You need to follow Jorden's instructions exactly.
You will probably need the path to the BOINC and BOINC DATA directories. The two paths for Windows Vista are explained here.
To exit completely from Boinc (for example before scans) you can right-click on the Boinc icon at the bottom of the screen and then select Exit.

Hi Alan
Thank you for posting. Your computer with the problem is here:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1072200
The CPDN programmer, Milo, has temporarily set your daily quota to -1 until the problem's fixed.
If you click on the 206 at the bottom of the page you'll get to a list of your models. For each model you can click on stderr+ and see the error messages. Your models have all crashed with Exit status -2 and the message that the processing couldn't get started.
This is an unusual type of error and we're discussing what you'll need to do. Please be patient; you are not being ignored!

No idea why it is not working, other projects seem ok. Any ideas?
The short answer is 'some ideas but no solutions'. The errors reported from your computer are the same as Alan Pedley's earlier. The -2 exit code accompanied by the message 'Could not launch model process. Last Error=216' on a 64-bit Windows installation is plausible: the 216 code indicates an attempt to launch a valid application, but which is for a machine type other than the current machine.
The problem is that plenty of people run (32-bit) CPDN applications on 64-bit Windows. There are some references on the Web to possible virus infections but that seems unlikely in these cases, where the windows version really is 64-bit.
It's being looked into ...
Was the machine always 64-bit or was it upgraded? |

Bonjour Djamel

Hi Angler
Thank you for posting about the problem. This is your computer 843760. Here's its list of tasks.
Don't worry about the model that didn't download correctly. A lot of computers had download errors at that time; I think there was a server problem. A download problem with one model should not cause other models that have already downloaded correctly to fail.
Model 11553133 should still be in your Boinc manager and you should still, I think, be able to process it.
But Milo, the CPDN programmer, has set your daily quota of new climate models to -1. This is because there's at least one problem you need to fix. When you've fixed the problem and you tell us here, Milo will reactivate your daily model quota.
So what's the problem?
Here is a typical crashed task. Exit code 22. Click on stderr+ to see more messages. We see 'process exited with code 22 (0x16, -234)'.
There is a FAQ for Linux computers with this error here. I think you may need to install these 32-bit compatibility libraries. Geophi has explained where to get them here.

Cordialement,
Djamel Ait amrane
Djamel says his antivirus has classed Boinc as low risk. [There's an antivirus website showing in the graphic what 'restriction faible' means here.]
He has installed the latest Boinc version. But communication [with CPDN] is still deferred.
Bonjour Djamel
I said well done for upgrading Boinc.
Communication with CPDN will remain deferred until you've solved the remaining problem and we ask Milo to reenable your quota.
In your AV you'll have to take Boinc out of the low risk category and say it's trusted.

Thanks for your Mail. Yes, that box ID: 1075501 is one of my Workers. I don't know why this box is doing the issues. But because I want to remove Boinc from this box, please let this Computer ID disabled in state no new work from project. ~5 mins. ago I have updated the box to boinc_6.10.58 and do a warm reboot.
I set the box locally to state "no new work from project". Downloaded Models can be hopefully correct finished, and than Boinc will be removed from the box. AV Definitions and Windows Updates are 100% up-to-date.

Hello, Mario. Welcome to the forum.
I see you have a lot of computers!
Yes, the problem computer is here. The computer page still says Boinc 6.10.18 but if in the computer's Boinc manager Projects tab you select climateprediction and press the Update button, the server will update the page and it will then say 6.10.58.
If you do want to continue to process climate models on this box it will be easy.
The problem was this: see a typical crashed model here. Click on stderr + to see the error messages. They say:
01:52:12 (2820): Can't acquire lockfile (32) - waiting 35s
This lockfile problem happens if
a) the computer has Windows
b) Boinc is installed as a service
c) The Boinc version is older than 6.10.49
The solution is to upgrade to the newest version of Boinc as this problem has now been fixed. You have already done this so the computer should now be able to process CPDN successfully.
I will ask Milo (our programmer) to reactivate the computer's daily quota. Unfortunately he may not have access to the server where he can do this until Monday 27 September, but we will not forget.

Thank you for posting.
The first thing I'm going to do is because you included your email address in your post. That isn't a good idea as there are spambot programs that scour the internet for email addresses then flood you with spam. Hi again Peter
Yes, the problem computer is here. A typical crashed task is here. If you click on stderr + you'll see some messages. They include 'execv: No such file or directory' which suggest that the lack of the 32-bit libraries was indeed the problem. Thank you for researching this problem yourself.
I shall ask Milo, our programmer, to reenable this computer's daily quota. I can't promise that he'll be able to do this immediately as this week he hasn't got daily access to the server where he can do this, so please be patient. We won't forget about you.

All of your tasks are failing with the error "execv: No such file or directory" (e.g. famous_vof2_1599_200_006717412_5, click on the '+' by stderr out). That system is also failing every task on Einstein@Home with the same error.
You can fix this by installing the 32-bit compatibility libraries on that system as described here. Let us know when you've done that and your work requests will be allowed again.

Hi Dean
Here's your computer. Click on the number in the Task list at the bottom to see your models.
Here's a typical model. Click on stderr + to see the error messages. Exit code -185 and CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied. (0x5).
The Boinc FAQ for that error is here. You'll have to get both Boinc folders into the safe/trusted category in both your firewall and AV. One or both will be blocking Boinc.
When you've done that please let us know and we can ask Milo to reactivate your daily quota.

Hi Enk
You were quick! Milo just sent you the email about 4 hours ago.
This is computer 1061185. A typical crashed model can be seen here. Clicking on stderr + shows the error messages.
Yes, it looks as if the 32-bit libraries were the problem. In the case of Linux users this is nearly always the problem. We'll ask Milo to reactivate your daily quota. He'll have gone home now but I'm sure he'll do this tomorrow morning UK time.
Thank you for taking action so quickly.

Hi there,
I recieved a misconfiguration e-mail.
My PC details
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=790214
I have now upgraded to windows 7 and the latest boinc so I'm hoping the problem should be solved and I should be ready for more work. |

This machine had been running just fine for several years, when suddenly....
Your computer (host # 844631) described below appears to have a misconfigured BOINC
installation and is crashing models. Would you please have a look at it?
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=844631
I can't see what the problem is, if there is any problem - the client has one CP task in the backlog and it also seems to be getting tasks from time to time...

I can't see what the problem is, if there is any problem - the client has one CP task in the backlog and it also seems to be getting tasks from time to time...
It looks like that system has a permissions problem which is preventing it from writing anything to the BOINC projects directory Stanislav.
Take famous_v35n_1799_200_006738515_0 as an example. It has exit status = 4 (The system cannot open the file.) and if you click on the '+' by stderr you'll see the following messages:
error: cannot create C:/Program Files/BOINC/data/projects/climateprediction.net/famous_se_6.11_windows_intelx86.dll
checkdir error: cannot create C:/Program Files/BOINC/data/projects/climateprediction.net/gfx
unable to process gfx/.
That P4 seems to be having the same problem in all of your other projects. For example, this Einstein task failed with the error:
[CRITICAL]: Failed to open temp gctFStat file "../../projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/h1_1105.10_S5R4__57_S5GC1a_1_0.tmp" for writing: 13: Permission denied
I'd advise upgrading from BOINC 6.10.18 to the latest recommended version 6.10.58. Installing the newer version should fix the permissions problem (as would reinstalling your current version, but the newer versions fixes a number of problems).

Hi Mario,
All of your tasks are failing with exit status -85 and the message
CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied. (0x5)
My guess is that your anti-virus program has quarantined the CPDN applications. If that's the case you'll need to override the quarantines and possibly restore the affected files.
If possible you should also set up a scan exclusion for your BOINC data directory (that'll prevent any BOINC project application from being quarantined in future). If that's not possible you'll need set all of the CPDN applications as trusted and watch out for AV quarantining of future application versions.

I received an email today about my climateprediction.net results being broken. Seems like I got these errors after this last hardware upgrade. Exit status 22 (0x16)
I just looked at the other project I'm running too and I got several errors there too so I will check and see what's causing this.
I use Comodo Internet Security and I had problems with it putting everything in the sandbox but that function is turned off now.

Hi,
I'm french and i've tried to read almost everything in this forum. Congratulations for your french speaking ! ;-)
I receeved the now famous email so I decided to solve the problem when I had time. This is the day to start. Here is the link for my computer :
[url]http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1090519
As said in this link : [/url]http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=448 , I've excluded both the BOINC and BOINC Data directories from actively being scanned by my anti virus and anti spyware product (not AVG neither Kaspersky but Avast! Free solution), and I've put boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe in the trusted zone of my firewall (Comodo).
I've done this half an hour ago...
I'm running BOINC v. 6.10.58
I've noticed that people running a 64-bits based version of Linux have troubles. As i'm using a 64 bits version of Windoze, I'm wondering if there is a link...

Milo - apologies for contacting you through a different thread but unsure how they work?
Briefly I just wanted to know if it is worth my transferring my home PC to your new regional experiment instead of the CP.net I've had running for a long time now.

Trouble is I don't leave the PC running when not using it so the benefits of a new download might not be worht it?

Hi Manxie
No, it isn't worth transferring. If you rejoin CPDN via the weatherathome method you will only be able to download the regional models, not the other model types. And at the moment weatherathome is only for Windows, not Linux or Mac.
If you only want to run regional models, go to your CPDN account which is listed in the blue menu on the left. Click on the climateprediction.net preferences then edit your preferences to select which model types you want/don't want.
You can see the model types currently available by clicking on the Server Status link in the blue menu.
Later I am going to move these posts about weatherathome to a more suitable place on the forum. I hope this is OK. I will leave here a link to the new place.

I never knew it, but every task for about the last year or so has resulted in an error. I got the e-mail this morning. This is my computer:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=442847
The task history doesn't seem to go back far enough to see more than one successfully completed entry. It also shows some tasks in progress, but my BOINC client has no ongoing tasks.
Just a few minutes ago I upgraded to the latest version of BOINC.
About 9 months ago I replaced capacitors on my motherboard because they were oozing electrolytic fluid. I also removed a module of RAM because it may have been faulty, so the computer has 512MB less.

Some time ago, the project started using SSE2 compiler options in the models.
Those computers without it will crash all current models immediately.
Please check to see if your AMD Athlon XP 2400+ has this. If not, then that computer should be retired from crunching climate models.
There are 2 sticky posts at the top of the Number Crunching section about this, one for the hadam3 models, and one for hadcm3.

Hi,
I got an email saying my host had been removed. The host URL is:
http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=615938
I followed the advice elsewhere and deleted climate prediction.net from the host, then reattached to the project. Can you try turning the host back on so we can see if that worked?
Thanks,
Deborah

Hello Deborah
Thank you for taking action and getting in touch with us so quickly. I'll ask Andy and/or Jonathan who are CPDN's programmers to enable your computer's daily quota again. One of them will, I expect, do this tomorrow morning.
As you have three machines all with Darwin you'll need to reset CPDN or detach then reattach to CPDN on all of them.

Hi Diggy
Unfortunately your computer(s) are hidden so only you can see them, not us. But if, as Les says, the problem is as described in the post he linked to you'll need to apply one of the suggested remedies. I expect that all the climate models your computer downloads have been crashing. The solution is easy:
In your Boinc Manager (advanced view) go to the Projects tab.
Climateprediction will be listed.
Click on it to highlight it.
Now press the Reset button.
That should solve the problem and your models will not now crash.
When you tell us that you have done this, we'll ask one of the programmers to give your computer its daily model quota again.

I had a run of calc errors. I re-installed BOINC and then noticed that my first install was MUCH SMALLER. Obviously, a download/install problem.
When I reinstalled, all seems to be working just fine now.

Restarting the computer and upgrading Boinc probably isn't sufficient to solve this problem. You need to detach from climateprediction then reattach. Or you can reset climateprediction as I described in red five posts above this.
When you say you have either
* detached and reattached
* or reset climateprediction
we will ask a programmer to allow your computer's daily quota again. You will then get new models and we will see whether they succeed.

I KNOW what caused my errors. I upgraded to a new version of BOINC, but it was a bad download. Only partial. By the time I noticed, there were 4 errors. I reinstalled. The second install was much bigger than the first, so that obviously accounted for the bad calc.
Everything is ticking just fine now. I do not need to reset project.
Please reconnect my download rights.
Thank you.

It is unusual for Macs to crash CPDN models (Macs are usually very reliable crunchers) so this is probably the solution for anyone with a Mac. The problem is not your fault and it's not your computer's fault.
Please tell us when you have detached from CPDN and reattached, or reset CPDN using Boinc manager. Then we can ask Andy, our programmer, to allow your computer's daily quota again.
If you are not sure how to reset CPDN please find my instructions above in red in my post of 15 September.

Jetzt neu installiert boinc-Manager 6.12.35 wxWidgets Version 2.8.10

Hallo Manfred
If Manfred's current models fail and don't run I've asked him to try another reset.

I expect that on Monday when he's at work again our programmer, Andy, will reallow the daily model quota of all the members who've said they have detached and reattached to CPDN, or reset CPDN in the Projects tab.
Thank you to everyone who has posted to say this.
You can go to Your account in the blue menu on the left. Or you can just click on your own name (or the names of other members) to see the details of the problem crashed models.

You're running 64 bit Linux, but you also need 32 bit libraries for these models.
In order to run cpdn on a 64bit Linux PC without errors, you may have to install these compatibility libraries. See this entry in the BOINC wiki for more information.

Andy Anderson and David
Mac runs applications in a sandbox, with the BOINC core client running project applications under a limited permissions account. All CPDN applications consist of 2 programs; BOINC runs the controller process with starts the worker process (e.g. hadcm3n_um_6.07_i686-apple-darwin). It appears that a permissions change in 6.12.* is preventing the worker process launch when the application programs are already on your system.
Resetting CPDN (or detaching and reattaching) forces the application programs to be redownloaded and should fix the problem.
If you look at the list of models for your Macs, you'll see that they've been crashing hundreds of them a few seconds after they start. :(
Please let us know when you've applied the fix, so that the computers can be re-activated for more work. Not that there IS any left at the moment.

Yet another mis-configured mac running Lion. I've reset CPDN and updated to the latest BOINC -- anything else I can do?
Thanks,
Norris
Your computer (host # 882540) described below appears to have a misconfigured BOINC
installation and is crashing models. Would you please have a look at it?

I don't see an option in Mac BOINC to "Detach" or "Reattach", but I can reset it so I've done that. |

I hope that you did those 2 steps in the other order. It's upgrading BOINC that's causing the problem. :)
Still, we'll see.
edit
Oops. I see that you also have Linux computers that have a problem.
The fix for them, is to manually install 32 bit libraries, as some repositories don't do this automatically.
See this entry in the BOINC Wiki for more info.

To detach from a project you go to the Boinc manager advanced view Projects tab. Highlight the project you want to detach from by clicking on it. Then press the Detach button.
To reattach you do it through the Boinc manager Tools menu. When you reattach say you're an existing member and please, please, please give the same email address as when you first joined CPDN.
Those of you who are upgrading your Boinc, which version are you getting please?

Greetings,
I received this message:
> Your computer (host # 1083490) described below appears to have a misconfigured > BOINC installation and is crashing models. Would you please have a look at it?
This machine is a very early MacPro Tower, currently running OS X 10.6.9 (10K549). I first noticed the problem late last winter & have already attempted several fixes.
1) Upgrade BOINC:
10.12.25patch2
--> 10.12.26
--> 10.12.33 (Aug 02)
--> 10.12.35 (Sep 09)
These changes do not appear to effect the problem
2) Upgrade OS X:
Regular updates, typically between 1 week and 3 weeks after release.
3) Run other projects; on other computers; detatch/re-atach
Einstein & yoyo do not have any execution problems.
Other computers do not have this problem
Re-attach did not effect it.
Do you have any additional suggestions ? |

Hello,
I've been told I'm misconfigured - here is the magic link
http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=415790
I run an iMac with 4x2.8GHz processors and 4 GB RAM. It's on OS X Version 10.7.1 and BOINC 6.12.33. I don't generally turn it off as once the screen powers down it uses very little power so it whiles away the hours of darkness looking for little green men UNLESS ClimatePrediction has some tasks that I can run (why are there only suitable tasks for my machine occasionally?) in which case I suspend other BOINC tasks as climate change is more worrying/likely than alien invasion.
Whatever shall I do?
Direct email to simon@trpcl.com would be speedier than this thread

I don't see a "Detach" button on Mac version 6.12.35 (x86) on the left (choices are: Update, Suspend, No New Tasks, Reset Project, Remove and Properties). Also I don't see an "Attach" choice under the Tools menu dropdown (choices are: Synchronize with BOINCstats BAM!, Add Project..., Stop Using BOINCstats BAM!, Display and Network Options, Computing Preferences).
Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly on how to Detach and Attach. Can you please clarify?
Thanks,
Don |

Hi,
I seem to have upgraded my Lion mac without obvious error (to 6.12.35), and have added the 32-bit libraries to the debian boxen. When/how will I know if the problems are fixed?
Thanks,
Norris

Hi,
I got another email saying a host had been removed. This host URL is:
http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=6011
I deleted climate prediction.net from the host, then reattached to the project. Can you try turning the host back on so we can see if that worked?
I also did this on my third remaining host, even though it hasn't been turned off yet, as a precautionary measure.
Thanks,
Deborah

[Don Dudan wrote:] I don't see a "Detach" button on Mac version 6.12.35 (x86) on the left (choices are: Update, Suspend, No New Tasks, Reset Project, Remove and Properties).
The 'Detach' button is now named 'Remove'.
'Attach' is then 'Tools | Add project or account manager', then pick climateprediction.net from the list. |

I have done detach + re-attach to project
I hope the problem is solved, you can try and send units again.

Hi,
I've reinstalled an older version of BOINC: 6.12.38.
I am not using 6.13.4 any more.
Let me know if it fixed the problem.

I installed the latest boinc version for the Mac OS (Lion).
I can not say that anything is fixed as when I try to run the BOINC manager, I get the error that I do not have permission to run the app and to re-run the installer and to answer yes the question regarding non-administrative ...
I have tried three times. I have never had an issue like this before.
I am going off line to run a permissions repair. If that doesn't work, I am going to have to dig into the terminal and find instructions on how to add myself to the managers group.

@ Robert,
Your problem sounds like this problem discussed recently on the BOINC dev forums. Also, it doesn't help when you say you've installed "the latest" version as there are a few "latest" versions. It's best to leave no ambiguity and give the actual version number. It's much easier to give you advice that way.

Ok, installed boinc 6.12.35, ran permission repair, re-installed 6.12.35, added myself to manager and project using sudo dscl . -merge /groups/boinc_manager ... boinc_project users
This allowed me to run the application Boinc Manager.app.
I reset climateprediction.net

I've been told my computer is crashing the models.
http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1150440
The mail I got says specifically:
Your computer (host # 1150440) described below appears to have a misconfigured BOINC
installation and is crashing models
The BOINC installation was a direct install from the script. If it was misconfigured, it was misconfigured from the get go.
I have installed a newer version of BOINC.

It's possible that you've been crashing models right from the start. Look at your list of models!

It sounds like you used an alternative Account Manager to attach to the projects.
In which case, you need to use that same Account Manager to detach/Remove as well as for Reattaching.

> Your computer (host # 1083490) described below appears to have a misconfigured BOINC
Observing, from links attached to this thread, that Mac OS X issues typically relate to faulty permissions and imperfect version upgrades to BOINC or CPDN -->
I have . . .
? Detatched all projects
? Uninstall BOINC (6.12.35)
? reboot & system maintenace
? Install BOINC (6.12.35)
? Attach projects
? permissions repair & defrag & reboot
? restart BOINC
I cannot think of anything else to do to this computer that may effect these issues, so believe that it is reasonable to resume work at this point.

For what it's worth, I have also had BOINC lock up trying to connect to the Projects, and when that happens I have to kill off the BOINC master since it won't go away when I quit BOINC. I restart BOINC, and it seems to be working.

How would I go about checking the models?
I just upgraded to the most current version, just in case that was part of the issue. |
|
|
|
|
|
It's upgrading BOINC from 6.10.* to 6.12.* on Macs that causes the issue.
For Mac users:
The advice in this sticky post applies.
As for checking your models, really? You've never looked at your account page?
OK, one of several ways to get there:
Click on your name alongside one of your posts
Near the bottom, alongside Computers, Click on View
Click on Details
At the bottom, you'll see how many models your computers has run/attempted to run
Click on the number
This gives the latest page for the list of models.
Go back a page or two, and you'll start seeing lots of almost instant failures for Coupled Model Full Resolution Ocean
Click on any model in the first column of the list to get the details for that model.
Click on the + sign alongside Stderr to see the errors for failed models.

@ Robert,
Your problem sounds like this problem discussed recently on the BOINC dev forums. Also, it doesn't help when you say you've installed "the latest" version as there are a few "latest" versions. It's best to leave no ambiguity and give the actual version number. It's much easier to give you advice that way.
I had read this independently, had un-installed, re-installed, repaired permissions, reinstalled and finally launched boinc manager. I checked back about an hour later and posted again.
A few minutes ago, I saw Les Bayless' posting regarding how to access our account info and did so. I also found several other of Les' posts.
So, I have now read (I hope.) all of the sticky links. To the both of you, Question:
When clicking the various links, I found this information:
Host 813251 has an incompatible CPU: (GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7], GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7600 @ 2.33GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6])
Host 1122714 has an incompatible CPU: (GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7], GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7600 @ 2.33GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6])
Since this represents my current machine (but with host # 909909) and the last thousand (several thousand?) of my tasks have been aborted after less than 30 seconds am I wasting your database space, your server time, my cpu cycles? I have followed all of the suggestions here (checked permissions, un-installed, re-installed, disconnected, reconnected, reset project). |
|
|
|
|
|
I'm not sure about those messages, but you've been through the process with the current machine, so I'll ask for it to be re-enabled and see what happens.
PS
I like the ID number of your current machine. :)

Host 813251 has an incompatible CPU: (GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7]
I have exactly the same CPU crunching a model now so I assure you it isn't incompatible in the sense that it isn't capable of running the CPDN science app. I wager you got that message after trying to merge hosts in your list of computers. Since it says
GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7600 @ 2.33GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6])
in the same sentence as the i7-2600 I think it's trying to tell you the host with the i7 cannot be merged with the host with the T7600 because they have different CPUs, i.e. they're incompatible. I see a T7600 in your list of computers so it makes sense.
So a great CPU in a host with a palindrome ID... it's gotta work!

<grin/> I LOVE everything about my machine. I saw the 909909 number and actually was pleased because it was making it easy for me to remember but did not realized that it was palindromic. My wife would have recognized it instantly but...
What is the significance of merging hosts?
How are host numbers assigned? Since I have this one, I would hate to change. 909909 just rolls off of the finger tips.

If you're using BOINC's Manager, then clicking on the project name (climateprediction.net), in the Project tab, will activate all buttons associated with this project.
If it doesn't, and you didn't attach to the project via, e.g., BAM, then your installation of BOINC has become corrupted, and will need to be uninstalled and then re-installed.

William, it will help the moderators if you can go into your account (in the blue menu on the left of this page) and in the climateprediction preferences section edit the item allowing your computer details to be displayed. This will allow us to see what sort of computer it is and what models it has run, encountering what sort of problems.
If you click on my name or Les's you'll be able to see these details about our computers and models. I don't think any of this needs to be treated as confidential. We need to see this sort of thing for you so we have a chance of offering advice.
Should climateprediction.net show your computers on its web site?
Please say Yes.

You mention BAM several times, so you'll have a different Manager. And it looks like the buttons have different labels, so I don't know what to advise about the wording.
This being the case, you'll need to Disconnect/Remove/????? via BAM, and then to re-attach/??????, also via BAM.

There have been so many posts in this thread that I'm not replying individually to each one. And the reply may well be several posts after the original, and it's clear that a lot of people aren't even reading the latest post before they add to the list.
Your computer was re-enabled soon after you said that you'd reset it.
But it's clear from the list of models on your computer 1099887 that you haven't fixed the problem.
If this continues for another 24 hours, I'm going to ask for that computer to be blocked again until it is fixed. Which consists of doing a Detach (or Remove), and then re-attaching again.
And these are the links that I keep posting for the benefit of people directed to this thread.

In BOINC Manager I did a "Stop Using BoincStats BAM!", only then could I "remove" the project via the button (which was previously grayed out). I quit BOINC Manager then detached, quit it and then added the project to BOINCStats BAM!, started up BOINC Manager again and turned on BOINCStats BAM! as manager again.
Can you please once again start accepting work from my host? I'll see if this works.

I recently received a message from climateprediction that I have a misconfigured BOINC installation.
I believe this has something to do with my update to the Lion OS and paired BOINC app update. I had some general issues with other BOINC projects too, but after a reinstall and some permissions updating other BOINC projects are now running smoothly. How do I determine if the climateprediction project now runs without issues?

What I would do:
1. Whatever antivirus program you are running, exclude the boinc and boincdata directories and subdirectories from scanning.
2. Upgrade BOINC to a later version, I would suggest 6.10.60
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
3. Startup boincmanager and click on climateprediction.net in the projects tab. Then click on the "reset project" button.
After you have done that, let us know and we will get one of the project computer guys to re-enable work fetch for your PC. |
|
|
|

I excluded the avast av from scanning the directories.
Then installed version 6.10.60.
Then I reset the project.
If you would re-enable the work fetch, I will let you know what happens.

The whole of the BOINC & SETI sites have been down for several days now, so no one can get new BOINC software.
As to your problem, you can see from the computer page that a large number of models have been wasted. All have failed within a few seconds of starting.
(Actually, all 3 of your computers are just crashing models seconds after starting.)
The error listed for them isn't clear to me, but it might be a corrupted file, or it might be your anti virus software blocking the programs.
You could try a project Reset. This will delete all of the projects files, and force the download of new copies. But this doesn't explain why ALL of your computers would be affected.
Have you excluded ALL of the BOINC data section from AV scanning?

execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadcm3n_um_6.07_i686-apple-darwin, 138105) failed!
That means you've been hit by the Mac upgrade permissions problem described in this thread. You should detach (remove) CPDN and reattach as described in that thread. Alternatively you could try manually deleting those files; BOINC will automatically regenerate them from the zip files with the correct permissions.
When you've done that please post back and the project team will re-enable work for your computer.
This process will have to be performed every time you upgrade BOINC to fix the permissions again.

Looks like all tasks are failing, some of the recent ones, all the other tasks in the work unit have also failed for others. this is due to a problem discussed elsewhere on this board but means that even if the units had got past the first 200 seconds or so they wouldn't have completed. Do you have any other software running at the same time that might cause problems? I am wondering if it is that your cpu is too old and is missing some of the instruction sets needed for the latest models?

All of CPDN's current applications can only be run by processors which support SSE2. The Athlon XP 1800+ doesn't and that's causing every task sent to your computer to crash (the "SIGILL: illegal instruction" lines which are visible when you expand the stderr for its tasks indicate that the CPU couldn't run an SSE2 instruction).
Unfortunately for you it's very unlikely that future applications will remove the SSE2 requirement so I'm afraid the only advice I can offer is to detach the computer from CPDN and concentrate its efforts on your other chosen projects.

Graeme,
All of your computer's tasks were failing immediately with a "too many exit(0)s" error and no CPU time. That suggests something on your system (anti virus?) was preventing the project applications from running, so reinstalling it might not have fixed the problem.
If you haven't already done so please check your private messages.

On your linux box you need to install some 32 bit libraries or the tasks will keep failing. Go to one of the models that failed, click the +stderr and look at the error messages to find the relevant libraries. I couldn't get the stand alone version of BOINC to run on this machine without doing that and I couldn't get the package manager's version to work at all, though installing it did install some dependencies that stopped the other one from working! The package manager version worked first time on my netbook which has Kubuntu rather than ubuntu on it but I am not going to be brave enough to assert that is the reason!
Oh and if you keep hitting the post button while waiting your message gets posted multiple times. ( I have done this too a while ago.

@Androidd
This is difficult. Most of the many early failures were likely due to you running a 64 bit version of your Linux OS (Ubuntu I gather) and not having the necessary 32 bit compatibility libraries installed, per this sticky. The stderr messages for those failed tasks had:
<core_client_version>6.10.17</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process exited with code 2 (0x2, -254)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
sched_setscheduler: Operation not permitted
execv: No such file or directory
</stderr_txt>
]]>
Later failures had this stderr message which complains about libstdc++
<core_client_version>6.10.17</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process exited with code 127 (0x7f, -129)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
../../projects/climateprediction.net/hadam3p_eu_6.09_i686-pc-linux-gnu: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
</stderr_txt>
]]>
You may want to make sure all the compatibility libraries are installed per my linked sticky, remove the entire boinc directory (however you may do that, through a package manager if that's the way you installed it), and then reinstall. |

Hi,
I have received notification of crashing models on one of my machines. I see the following in the stderr of the failed jobs
<core_client_version>6.12.35</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process exited with code 22 (0x16, -234)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
execv: No such file or directory
</stderr_txt>
]]>
I see from this forum that this may be due to 32bit libraries not being installed. This server is a 64bit linux server so I guess this could be the case. However how do I find out what is missing so that I can install the correct library?
Thanks |

For starters, this is your list of models. As you can see, everything is failing.
The more recent have been for REPLANCA errors, which affected everyone at the time.
As for the other failures, I'm not sure. They seem to be a long way into the model, and the usual cause may not apply.
But this thread is about "the usual suspect". And, as Apple keep tightening the security measures with each OS upgrade, it has to be re-applied each time.
I believe that a fix may be in the testing stage for our models.
Apparently the very latest version of BOINC for Macs has a cure for some problems. I'm not sure what they're up to, as the BOINC site is down for building maintenance, but I think it's 7.0.31 or 32.
Updating to this may help.

I'm now on BOINCManager 7.0.31, detached this project and re-attached it. All current jobs were downloaded again and started freshly. At around 12 % three of the models crashed again. So it looks like there is another problem than just the "standard" one. |

Ok, I'm thinking that this issue may be due to missing 32bits libraries. Can you confirm ?
The error message in stderr for your tasks is:
error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
This is happening on 6 of your computers (1202949, 1202950, 1202951, 1202953, 1202957 and 1202959) and the solution is linked from this sticky.
It's likely that error is being generated before the applications hit the point where they access the 32-bit libraries (links to that solution in this sticky).
Three of your computers (1202952, 1202955 and 1231875) seem to be running tasks successfully but are failing to run the post-processing phase because libz.so.1 is missing:
Unable to load library hadam3p_eu_se_6.09_i686-pc-linux-gnu.so
dlopen error: libz.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Is there any advice you can give me to overcome that problem?
I do not want to leave my computer on all the time. |

Peter,
Do you first suspend CPDN tasks? Many files are open and simply cutting power typically doesn't allow time (sufficient residual power) to close all files; that results in a crash on restart.

Aaaa... Help? :)
I see that every task this computer received since 23 Feb 2009 (this is the oldest one I can see on your site) have some errors.
Maybe it wasn't OK from the beginning? A reset, detach, reattach might help?
A review of my computers shows that many/all of them have errors for some types of CP applications, for example:
UK Met Office HADAM3P European Region v6.09
UK Met Office HADAM3P Southern Africa v6.09
UK Met Office HADAM3P ...
The newest computers have 0 credit for CP, but have credits for other BOINC projects, without errors. All this new ones have Centos 6 x86_64, and enough CPU power, RAM and HDD space.
So please review ALL my computers, or at least the ones active in last 30 days, and give me some advice.
Thank you

Adi,
All of your tasks are failing with errors like the following (visible by clicking on the '+' on the stderr line of this page):
hadam3p_saf_6.09_i686-pc-linux-gnu: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by hadam3p_saf_6.09_i686-pc-linux-gnu)
That's indicating the model requires a more recent version of that library than you have on your system. You might find this post helpful.

Hooprat,
That Linux PC is crashing many models. The stderr messages on the crashed models has a line about "execv". This is a symptom of a PC with a 64 bit distribution of Linux not having 32 bit compatibility libraries installed. See this sticky in the Linux forum for links on how to install the compatibility libraries. |
|
|
|
|
|
HoopRat,
The other error reported on your tasks (e.g. this one, errors visible by clicking on the '+' on the stderr line) is:
sched_setscheduler: Operation not permitted
That's indicating that BOINC can't set the project application's scheduling priority to batch (idle) which is very strange as all users should be able to lower the priority.

32 bit libraries might be a problem Mike, but the stderr messages for your failed tasks show that the project applications are failing to find the libstdc++.so.6 library first.

I did the following on that particular host
(http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=419870):
- installed boinc 6.10.58 (previous was 6.4.5)
- extracted libstdc++.so.6 as symlink to libstdc++.so.6.0.10 from libstdclibstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm
- started boinc with:
LD_PRELOAD=/home/$HIDDENUSER/boinc/kit/boinc/lib/libstdc++.so.6 /home/$HIDDENUSER/boinc >/dev/null 2>&1 &
That libstdc++ version might not work, or even crash, on Fedora 8,

No, I don't. But I do a regular shutdown and do not just "cut off power". Usually all programs close their files on a system shutdown request or halt the shutdown process if closing is not possible.
I will give it a try and suspend work on the project before shutdown in the next days.
Are all BOINC projects not capable to cope with a regular shutdown process or is this just climateprediction? I mean, is this a problem of the BOINCManager?
Best regards,
Peter |

Thank you Thyme Lawn.
I also installed on another host libstdc++ 386 (it's a 64 bit one, it hadn't the compatible one).
I think that, instead of
"no work for your type of computer"
the message to be
"some libraries are missing, please run ldd $name_of_exec_with_missing_libraries to check which one(s)"
The message will be less cryptic (at least for some people :) )...
Or maybe at least
"check <link-on-cpdn-site> for prerequisites to run $app"
Just an idea...

Wes,
The stderr messages for the failed tasks indicated "couldn't start CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied." Your detaching and reattaching may fix that, but you may also want to exclude the BOINC data folder from being scanned by your antivirus/antimalware software.
We need to let the software people know you have attempted to fix the configuration of that PC before they will allow new tasks to download. See if you can exclude that folder from scanning, and let us know, and we'll let the project people know that they should re-enable downloads. |
|
|

|
Are all BOINC projects not capable to cope with a regular shutdown process or is this just climateprediction? I mean, is this a problem of the BOINCManager?
Peter,
No. CPDN seems to be unique in the number of large files open simultaneously. (Imagine the number of parameters being modeled, the global grid, vertical layers into the atmosphere and ocean depths, for current model-time and previous time slice, you'll get the idea -- and the necessity. [Numbers for layers and grid vary with model type.])

Apparently I have a misconfigured boinc module.
http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1101060
I've reinstalled boinc.
Other boinc projects seem to be working.
What's my next step? |
|
|
|
|
What's my next step? Just make sure the project is reset before requesting new work. That will clear out any existing data and allow new data to be downloaded (including the applications), which will then have the correct permissions.
Other boinc projects seem to be working. BOINC say the permissions problem is not their fault, though it was a change at their end that caused this problem for Macs on CPDN. They also say they won't fix it because that would inconvenience existing BOINC projects. I don't quite see the logic of that, since CPDN is an existing project whose (Mac) users have been severely inconvenienced. Nonetheless, CPDN have developed a fix that should emerge soon with a new type of HADAM3P model. As with many permissions issues, "if it ain't hurting, it ain't working": this is the "hurting" section, but tighter permissions will in future prevent other problems. People will not, of course, post about the problems they are not having.
If you post back here to say that the project has been reset then one of the moderators will send a message to the project staff, who will re-enable that machine.

An example model from that host is hadcm3n_o5i3_2100_40_008139322_1. Expanding the 'Stderr' text reveals reports like the following:
execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadcm3n_um_6.07_i686-apple-darwin, 132125) failed!
This suggests that the Mac has the permissions problem described in the post immediately before your post. You should follow the suggestions in that post every time you upgrade BOINC Manager, until improved CPDN applications are available that work around the permissions problem. |

That machine hasn't been active for a while, so I'm not sure why you've got the message now. However, if you look at the task record for that computer (here) you will see a long series of crashes. This is caused by a Mac permissions problem (described here). The solution is to reset the project (or remove it) each time BOINC is upgraded. So, as you've just upgraded, a reset is in order.
The problem is shown in the task logs, such as this extract from a HADCM3N crash:
execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadcm3n_um_6.07_i686-apple-darwin, 139275) failed!
The good news is that the new HADAM3P applications arriving shortly will not have this problem.
If you post back here noting the reset (or remove/re-attach) then I'll pass the message back to the project and they'll reset that machine's quota to the normal value. |
