I\'m going to give mine to friends and family as birthday presents. If I think they are important they will get 100,000. Less important people will get 50,000 (but I won\'t tell them how many credits other people have received).

Or will this discourage them from running Boinc projects themselves?

However most crunchers that bother with it just use the total amount to brag with.

I am going to reveal the great secret of BOINC. When you get 10,000,000 credits you can trade them in for a private island in the South Pacific! The only problem is that the island is only 4 feet above sea level and when global warming melts the icecaps it will be underwater. ;-)

Pretty much. A form of them, the “recent average credits” or RAC are used to set rankings within teams. Other than that it is just bragging rights.

However, credits do give other members a very quick idea of how much work your computer\'s done for the project ie whether you have plenty of experience or not much yet.
