It's because a script has stopped running, and Milo is on a much delayed and deserved holiday. Backups: Here |

I suppose I have a different take on this credit business. As long as my units run, and whether they complete or crash is immaterial. I look upon it as my tiny contribution to help further the understanding of the underlying science. For me credits are meaningless (you can have my air miles too). |

I look upon it as my tiny contribution to help further the understanding of the underlying science. For me credits are meaningless (you can have my air miles too). Tend to agree. Ban credits! If that happened, the projects would lose many participants (i.e. credit hunters) but, at least, those who remained would be revealed as being 100% committed to the project's objectives. My team has custom stats which counts completed models. Over 4k to date. Am very happy with my own contribution in contrast to the controversial measure of credits! Also, imo, another more meaningful number is equivalent SM3 years. Credits are even more controversial when considering combined BOINC stats. Apart from the obvious variations between CPU and GPU projects, there is not even a level playing field between CPU projects. CPDN does not "pay" as well as many other projects. So what? Anyway, Milo certainly deserves his holiday. The only concern with the lack of cover since Tolu's departure is what would happen if there was another major (or even minor) server problem? |

Milo fixed a breakdown of many functions on the independent forum the other day and he did it from afar. But while away from Oxford he's only prepared to do this for serious malfunctions which is to be expected. I'm afraid he doesn't consider the credit script failure to be a serious malfunction. After all, we'll get all our credits later when the script is running again; they're delayed, not lost. Milo's going to give login rights to one of the researchers next week which will reduce the risks associated with him being CPDN's only programmer at the moment. But there are a lot of things that I'm sure none of the researchers would know how to do. The credits script is of course supposed to run automatically but occasionally it just stops, sometimes for no apparent reason. Critical functions like a server disk almost filling up send Milo a warning, but the credits script isn't considered a critical function. Credits do motivate quite a lot of crunchers, which is a good thing, and some members check on them as an indication that everything is working properly; that's another good thing. The credits also help motivate teams; I don't think there's much doubt that belonging to a team, particularly one whose members can communicate with each other, helps crunchers sort out problems and keep their computers working properly. Totally agree. If I were in Milo's shoes, I would want another trustworthy programmer there to handle things while I was on holiday and to help with all the work day-to-day. As long as credits will queue properly, there's no problem. Good luck in the job search. |

No problem with Milo having a holiday - I have read enough that I am sure he has more than earned it! From some of the posts I have read elsewhere I am sure that stats do help motivate people. - I would still be running cpdn without them but do like to check the stats regularly. I was horrified to see on one of the threads someone saying they would suspend activity for the project till some issue with stats was sorted out. |

Words of wisdom from mo.v as always ;-) But I'm sure those of us with any sense will be happy enough to wait for our credits until Milo gets back from his well-deserved holiday (actually, I could do with one of those myself!). I hope he's having a lovely relaxing time doing whatever he enjoys and not having to think about work too much! Dave, are you sure the person you mention wasn't just planning to suspend network activity? That just means you continue to crunch but stop your computer from trying to send trickles. And it's sometimes a good idea to do that if there's a problem with a server - your trickles just get saved until the server is working again, and then you get a "mega-trickle". Some people do that as a matter of course anyway. Visit the Scotland team |

Right on Ron. The credit assignment to my performance is so haywire that I have suggested that credits be assigned to those crunchers who ask for them. Par example, I shut down for a disk massage recently, following completion of a Famous model; upgraded to BOINC 58, rebooted, and the credits rate fell off the screen. Was I worried? nada. It appears to me that Milo would enjoy better weekends and more sleep if credits were restricted to the hotshots. But perhaps even that doesn't make sense. Consider this: my RAC ranges about 260-275, on my Thinkpad oldtimer; mo.v today shows RAC about 40 for 3 pretty fast machines. (Apples and Oranges?) So,where is the comparability and who gives a damn? |

John, Mo participates heavily in Beta development work. Beta total credits appear here (usually) but RAC never does. HTH. "We have met the enemy and he is us." -- Pogo Greetings from coastal Washington state, the scenic US Pacific Northwest. |

Neat. Thanks AstroWX. I will track down a more comparable data point. But I will never know everything about these workings. Entertaining mysteries. P.S. That "important stuff" URL reaches into some pretty ancient MikeMars history (2006..?) Any hurricanes up your way this year? |
