From my C-shell memories of long time ago I think you have to use the "setenv" command, tcsh should also need it.

Hi geophi, thanks for verifying my procedure. It was Bash, and Scientific installed it as default. I'm so used to seeing Bash as default on so many distros that I've almost forgotten about other shells.

nohup is your friend if you start BOINC from a terminal session and want it to keep running when the session is closed.

And mysteriously, today the graphics started working. - Yesterday they weren't. I need to look @ the update log to see what has fixed it.
