A question re user/author names. It appears that author names are not unique and more than one person can post to any thread with the same name. Obviously user id's are different (unique) but identical author names for different people could be really confusing. Is this a shortcoming of the BOINC system? Ideally, I would have thought that the author name should have a corresponding uniqueness with the user id for the sake of data integrity and that a check at registration time would be appropriate.

I noticed this discrepancy because of a post on the thread 'Using GPU's for number crunching', with user id of 44414 - a different user to myself. Obviously, signing with one's full name avoids confusion, but still??

PS This seemed to be only board to raise this question. Is there a more appropriate one?

PPS I do understand that this is quite trivial compared with other issues.

This is as good a place as any, I guess. Or Cafe CPDN.

The unique identifier used by BOINC is the user's email address, as this HAS to be unique for it to work.

6-7 years ago, when the BBC used a then new version of one of the models to publicise it's program on climate change and advertised it on the BBC news, (the BBC Climate Change Experiment), there were a lot of: Dad's computer, Administrator, User, Mine, David's computer, Peter's computer, etc.

The user's ID used to appear here on the next line under their name, but that disappeared a few server code revisions ago.
The only way left to tell the difference, is by the Joined date, and the 2 lots of credit.

Of course, on our alternative php board, the user name IS unique. So new arrivals are having to use either their full name, or a name and number. :)
