      The files for a batch of work were missing from the download server. Andy thinks he's dealt with (i.e. deleted) all of the affected workunits.

          Actually aren't all the hadam3p_pnw_b... work units the old (dud) ones? In which case we already know about them

            Three download files, like those reported above, produce similar HTTP errors in the new PNW batch.

            EDIT: Jonathan notified by PM.

              I got a string of the following error messages yesterday after allowing new tasks. I eventually aborted the downloads and stopped getting new tasks.

              Temporarily failed download of hadam3p_eu_6e9h_2008_1_008222710.zip: HTTP error
              Backing off 1 min 0 sec on download of hadam3p_eu_6e9h_2008_1_008222710.zip
              Temporarily failed download of atmos_6e9h_2008_1_008222710_0.gz: HTTP error
              Backing off 1 min 0 sec on download of atmos_6e9h_2008_1_008222710_0.gz

              Is there any connection with this problem and 'Permanent HTTP error' or is it something different.
              I couldn't find any postings regarding this precise situation..

                There's no connection Dave. The 'Temporarily failed download' message indicates there was no response from the download server. Having said that, the workunit for your task (hadam3p_eu_6e9h_2008_1_008222710) is a bit strange:

                • The _0 task issued at 6 Oct 2012 23:35:00 UTC started running but failed due to missing libstdc++.so.6 library.
                • The _1 task issued at 7 Oct 2012 2:39:37 UTC had a permanent download error.
                • The _2 task issued to you at 7 Oct 2012 22:21:51 UTC was aborted during download.

                        Many members are having download problems, usually just certain files from each model, not all the files. I have three EU files stuck in Transfers trying to download.

                        We're seeing all sorts of error messages: HTTP errors, transient HTTP errors, permanent HTTP errors and more. The problem must be with the server but as it's the weekend the programmers aren't there to fix what's wrong.

                        At the moment please don't abort models or reset the project or press the Update button in BOINC manager as these actions cannot fix a problem that lies in the server(?). We just have to be patient.

                        If your computer needs work because it can't get CPDN models at the moment, attach to another project. Einstein and Simap have tasks and there are lots of other good projects.

                        We will post in the News and Announcements thread at the top of Number Crunching when we know more.

                          I didn't abort but Boinc 7.0.28 did. It tried from the 16th (hadam3p_eu_61d8_2002_1_008225846_0 - Workunit: 8380970) & today( 22nd) gave up.

                          Boinc should be patient not we. :)

                            I might be wrong but isn't a reasonable solution to suspend the project and wait until server problems are sorted out. That way, network activity isn't affected on other projects.
                            I did that a while ago when there were similar problems. I checked each day to see if it was worth a try.
                            Worked for me and stopped possible loss of results. We can't get any more work at the moment anyway.

                              As you probably know what is in the transfers tab is not affected by the projects suspended on the projects tab or only that particular WU suspended. In the previous problem with the server running out of disk space, I had both the WUs and the project itself suspended and no new work but the uploads did try to upload. There is no pause/stop button in the transfers tab unfortunately, only abort & retry now.

                              My point was to show the CPDN people a new twist for the problems they have with the server.

                              And mo.v wrote before my post to not abort the models. That particular model had started to download on the 16th when only the uploads were affected, not the downloads and it kept trying for 6 days when Boinc decided to abort the WU this morning (22nd) because of too many download errors & retries. The first file of that model (starting with atmos in the file name) was around 36 KB and the other two were between 12MB to 15 MB. None of the model's needed 3 files were able to download, so the model didn't start yet. It wasn't a case for suspending a particular WU so not to produce more files which wouldn't upload. It was a case for not being able to download the complete model.

                                OK, thanks, I didn't know that.
                                Since the BOINC definition of the Suspend command is :-
                                "Suspend: Suspends ANY further processing of this project",
                                I had assumed that this included uploads as well as downloads, since it certainly stops downloads. (It's obvious that 'No new tasks' is to stop downloads only)
                                Well, one lives & learns.

                                  New News post up the top of this section.

                                  About the only thing that can be done on computers, is to set the Network activity off. But then it needs to be manually watched for those people with multiple projects with short completion times.
                                  Perhaps once an hour have a short on, and then off again when the other projects have uploaded.

                                  BOINC keeps a diary, and every time there's a failed transfer, it makes a note. When there's enough failures, it gives up and aborts the WU as being a waste of time.

                                    Dave, several years ago a previous moderator, MikeMarsUK, did ask in a Trac ticket for a project-by-project network suspend button for the Transfers tab. Trac tickets are the commonest way of making new requests. David Anderson in Berkeley refused the request even though many of us really wanted it at the time; his way of thinking was to keep BOINC Manager as simple as possible and avoid the proliferation of new buttons.

                                    At that time files could only remain in the Transfers tab for two weeks after the first upload attempt. After that BOINC aborted the file transfer. That BOINC rule caused a couple of really scary panics after which DA relented in response to our pleas and increased the transfer waiting time to two or three months. So now we never need to worry about this problem.

                                    Referring to what Les said, I think the number of upload attempts that BOINC allows for each file is 100. The backoffs that BOINC imposes make it very unlikely that this limit will be reached, but this is why I advised members not to repeatedly press the Retry now button.

                                    Abracadabra! My stuck uploads remain stuck but my three stuck downloads have downloaded and that model has begun to crunch!

                                      I'm old enough (not only age wise but BOINC wise as well) to know a bit more/better. I'm in this BOINC business when I joined the original SETI@Home (and I still crunch for it) in June 1999 before BOINC was even conceived. From BOINC 1.x to the latest 7.x version.

                                      @Les & mo.v

                                      Thanks for the explanation.

                                      How many times for the downloads?

                                      Avoid the proliferation of buttons? You know how many buttons some projects like to add, don't you? CPDN puts ONLY six, Einstein thirteen!!!!!!

                                          Better still is the real error:

                                          Model crashed: REPLANCA: Non-standard period for periodic data

                                          I'll report it.

                                            At least your getting whole WU’s (even if they seem to be defective). I am stilling getting those Permanent HTTP error download failures. The only difference is they don’t seem to be leaving the 3 files stuck in the transfer tab anymore.

                                              At least your getting whole WU’s (even if they seem to be defective). I am stilling getting those Permanent HTTP error download failures. The only difference is they don’t seem to be leaving the 3 files stuck in the transfer tab anymore.

                                              Well, that's the whole point of the distinction between 'temporary' and 'permanent'.

                                              If it's a temporary error, it'll try again (and again...) later - and stay in the transfers tab while it does so.

                                              If it's a permanent error, that's it - finished. Nothing left to do.

                                              What would be more useful would be to set the <http_debug> logging flag, so that you can report which of the many and various HTTP errors you might be encountering on any particulat task or any particular day.

                                                what should my cc_config.xml file look like to do this ?

                                                        I already have a file cc_config.xml in my BOINC data directory,

                                                        <cc_config>
                                                        <log_flags>
                                                        <http_debug>1</http_debug>
                                                        </log_flags>
                                                        <options>
                                                        <no_gpus>1</no_gpus>
                                                        <ignore_ati_dev>0</ignore_ati_dev>
                                                        </options>
                                                        </cc_config>

                                                        and save it as cc_config.xml in my BOINC data directory.

                                                            From the BOINC Help pages (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration)

                                                            If you edit the configuration file while BOINC is running, the changes will take effect only if you select the Advanced / Read config file menu item.

                                                            Warning: Any changes in the <log_flags> section will be used immediately after re-read of the config file. Yet a lot of changes in the <options> section will need a complete exit and restart of the BOINC client. They will not take if you just re-read the config file.

                                                                            I was under the impression the "download errors" would cease on their own once problems were remedied on the server side, but now I'm not so sure ... I am still being plagued by these, but looking at others who were assigned the same CPDN model tasks, not everyone's work units are failing with "Error while downloading" ... so could it be a configuration problem on my end ? Here are the work units of a computer on which I've yet to successfully download a CPDN model task, after several weeks of patiently waiting for success ....

                                                                            http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/results.php?hostid=1243226

                                                                                I'm going to copy a reply I posted a few hours ago on the independent forum to another member with a problem very similar to yours. He was worried that the repeated download failures on more than one computer meant that something was wrong with his computers. I said (and I'm adding a few more details to what I said earlier):

                                                                                I don't think it's a problem at your end. There have been a lot of CPDN download problems recently, quite apart from the fact that not many climate models have been available for download.

                                                                                First of all Jonathan told the moderators last Thursday:

                                                                                One of the servers that provides download files has failed. Manticore.oerc provides the files for Weather@home (hadam3p_eu hadam3p_pnw). Two of her hard drives have failed in her RAID.

                                                                                The upshot is that we cannot provide any new work for WAH until she can be repaired/replaced, and we will continue to get download failures for this project.

                                                                                WAH means Weather At Home ie the three regional model types, hadam3P for EUR, SAF and PNW. The manticore server does not appear on the CPDN Server status page; you could say that it serves the servers that are visible to us. I think it is very unlikely that two new hard drives have been installed on it yet. Jonathan would, I think, have told us.

                                                                                With regard to your hadcm download failures, moderator Thyme Lawn has said:
                                                                                Download of the application version stamp files failed. Computers which started running [ie which successfully downloaded a model] had all previously run a HadCM3N v6.07 task; those which failed [to download a model] hadn't. That suggests the application version stamped files are missing from the download server.

                                                                                My [] parentheses in order to try to clarify the problem.

                                                                                Hope that helps a little.

                                                                                  ... prompts me to wonder, could I perhaps locate and copy "hadcm3n_se_6.07_windows_intelx86.zip", "hadcm3n_um_6.07_windows_intelx86.zip", and/or "hadcm3n_data_6.07_windows_intelx86.zip" from another computer (that I've had participating in the CPDN project for a much longer time) over to computer 1243226 that's having the most acute download problems (since it's new to CPDN and as yet has no active CPDN tasks), so that its next hadcm download attempt might be successful ? What this question really boils down to, I think, is whether the physical presence of these files in the BOINC data folder alone sufficient, or would I also need to edit or create corresponding entries in some xml local(?) file that BOINC and/or the CPDN project uses to "remember" that these shared/common files have already been downloaded and exist locally on the computer ?

                                                                                  Whether or not this is advisable and "worth the effort" (and worth the risk of unintended bad consequences) also depends on how soon the necessary "application version stamped files" will be restored on the download server. If a remedy on the server side is just a day or two or three away, then being patient and doing nothing at my end may be the best approach ... but in the event it could take a week or longer for this to resolve by itself (i.e., on the server side), then it might be worth the effort for me to attempt a manual patch here on this new (to CPDN) computer on which I'd like to start number-crunching. Any thoughts ?

                                                                                  Thanks again,

                                                                                          Depressing, isn't it?
                                                                                          But the only work at the moment are re-sends and re-gens. If people want to try to get these bits of work, then it seems that they should expect to get a repeat of someone else's failed download.
                                                                                          The only thing to do, is to wait a few hours to see if it is just due to a very busy server, and then Abort it if it's still failing. And report the model in question here, so that we can pass on the details.

                                                                                          A direct link to the model's work page would be nice, so that we don't have to go trawling though dozens of computers looking for it.

                                                                                          Personally, I shut down my computers weeks ago when the main work ran out, so I'm saving on power, and don't have the stress of failed downloads.

That work unit is marked 'No Resubmission' but it has evidently been re-submitted (because you got it, or bits of it at least). That's a server-side error, which is why the files are missing: the files shouldn't be there because the work unit was marked finished long ago.

Other projects aren't affected by this because they don't have the data retention requirements of CPDN.

                                                                                                              Most of the upload and download errors reported here have been caused by networking or hardware problems at the server - and these have been under a continual fix and replacement process, which has been extensively discussed (disk failures, URL changes etc.). When successfully downloaded these models are perfectly valid and not a waste of resources.

                                                                                                              The cause of the 'No Resubmission' problem, which affects ancient models that do not need to be run again, was identified in the last few days and reported here a few hours ago by Les: that's not bad ...

                                                                                                              No-one should abort any model, however troubled its download history, unless the work unit is marked 'No Resubmission'.

                                                                                                                There have been upload and download problems for a while but they do not all have the same cause.

                                                                                                                  However, there is also the Linux 'handler' etc. problem. Traces have demonstrated, to the project staff's satisfaction, that the WU details leave Oxford intact. They appear to get corrupted on the client machine. No-one has ever got to the bottom of that; perhaps no-one has looked.

                                                                                                                  I'm not sure which one of those options you've been hit by. If the first, then that needs to be fed back so that a correction can be made. If the second then I can quite understand the frustration at editing XML files.

The Linux hnddler/handler thing seems to be hardware-related and really really obscure and I'm not blaming anyone for not figuring it out. I've looked at it a few times and it is for sure a puzzler.

                                                                                                                    Some kind of pre-submission filter or checker might be worthwhile - especially because the CPDN WU's can run so long - even if a batch has an obvious configuration or even spelling problem, that can waste a day or two's worth of up-and-downloads or a few thousand WUs worth of bandwidth. And annoyance to us long-time contributors.

                                                                                                                    But -- I expect to keep on crunching - annoyances aside - at least until my current crop of cpu's fails or goes obsolescent.

What I can't remember is whether or not I need to delete the folder with the model or whether BOINC will do it given time?

                                                                                                                            Having extra CPDN-folders is only a problem after a model has started. As long as one or more of the input-files is missing, the model never starts, and BOINC-client cleans-up on it's own.

                                                                                                                            Note, some of the input-files can be marked as "sticky"-files, in case they're used by multiple models. "Sticky"-files is not automatically deleted. Manually deleting such files won't work either, they'll just be tried re-downloaded next time client re-starts. Depending on client-version, they won't be removed by a reset either, but if not mistaken they will be removed on reset if you're running a fairly resent v7-client.
