Saw the thread on Getting Started about problem attaching to climateprediction.net
Posting here because this easy fix won't work unless you already have an account, but worked for me adding a new machine to an existing account, when the gui and boinccmd tools to attach were , maybe still are, failing.

Just copy the account_climateprediction.net.xml from the BOINC data folder on another machine to the same folder on the new machine. This is the folder where client_state.xml resides. The file account_climateprediction.net.xml includes an <authenticator> which should match exactly with the "Account key" on the "Your account" page.

Might be useful in a script to set up CPDN on multiple new machines - uh.

Comments? suggestions? warnings?

Thanks
