Hi

New user here. I just installed CPDN, and downloaded my first work unit, which is running.

I'm using a 4-core i7, and my understanding is that BOINC usually assigns one work unit to each core, so it should be using all 4 cores. I have this set up under computing preferences, but there is no sign it's downloading any more work units.

At the time of writing there are still (a few!) work units to download, but that seems to be declining fast.

Is there a problem? How do I configure it to use all four cores?

Thanks.

On the BOINC Manager main page, go to Tools. There are four tabs there. Go through each one and make sure you are not limiting some computer resource that would cause tasks not to be downloaded.

Also, Climateprediction only allows you to download tasks once per hour.

Hello Nutbeem

Welcome to the project.

The 2 options for setting the number of cores used, are in the 1st of the 3 preference sections on your user account, the one called Computing preferences

The first one is a number, and was from the days when computers only had a few cores.
The 2nd one is a percentage, and allows for a very large number of cores.

However, you should also check the Event log in BOINC, to see if there are any messages about why BOINC isn't downloading more.
One possibility is that it started with one model, and then went into the one hour wait until it could ask for more. But in the meantime you've clicked the Update button, possibly lots of times. This would have the effect of constantly resetting the wait back to one hour.

Hi Nutheem, In case you can't find the event log, it is under the Advanced tab which opens it up in a new window. This took me a long time to find a few updates of BOINC ago!

I have an Intel i7 cpu with four cores and eight logical processors. I have the problem of processor being overused. All of the Hadam work units use all eight even though I have prefs set to use only four both on the local prefs and the Boinc prefs. As a result, my computer slows to a crawl when CPDN wu's are running unless I go into Windows 8.1. task mgr. and manually set processor affinity to four. What is going on here? I don't want to suspend crunching of CPDN wu's when I'm using the computer. Other projects I participate in don't present this problem even when they are using all eight processors. As well, CPDN hadam "exited with zero status but no 'finished' file" as in the log below:

In the list that you posted it says:
3/30/2014 9:25:51 PM | | max CPUs used: 4

And your list of models shows there are only 4 running.

If you're talking about processor activity, then that will most likely be due to Windows swapping high activity processing activity around among the cores to even out the heat build up in any one part of the processor chip.
Windows has always done this in the background.

**************

The exited ... etc message has been there for years.
I think that's when the work is using up so much processor time that BOINC doesn't get a chance to talk between the "client" and the "gui" for x amount of seconds. It then gets worried about not knowing what the client (worker) part is doing.

But there are so many of these long time messages that I may have it confused with something else.

Anyway, not much that you can do. It'll either clear up, or the task will die.

That machine has a high percentage of failures to completions. The failures checked have an extraordinarily high number of interruptions logged. Do you have Prefs set to 'leave in memory' when suspended? If not, that's asking for trouble... [interrupt]
