I do not know where to report that the climateprediction.net front page is down. I have only been able to get to the forum by going through my browser history to go to the BOINC web pages. Since new BOINC clients will need to visit the front page to find the scheduler, this problem will prevent new users from joining this project. I am not sure if this is the right forum to report this problem, but I could not find a forum to report web site issues. Feel free to move this post or let me know if I am posting in the wrong forum. |

As good a place as any. The computer that hosts the front page, (and the science pages, etc), was under attack earlier, so it's been taken off line until that can be investigated. Could be a while, given the time of year. (It's reminiscent of a Dr Who Christmas special. :) ) No other info at present, but it looks like a DDOS attack. |

PS There are links in the Projects tab of your BOINC manager, to this Message board, as well as your Account page, and a few others. Also, at the top of this Number Crunching section is a sticky thread: News and Announcements. This is where we post items that are important for everyone to know. It's worth subscribing to that thread, so that you get an email notification of future posts. |

Is there a way to attach a new host while the front page is down? since the the font page URL is the same as the attach URL. I have an account already i'm just trying to attach one more host. I tried this method mentioned elsewhere in this forum with no success... Using a command prompt I navigated to C:\\Program Files\Boinc\ then entered the command BOINCCMD --attach_project http://climateprediction.net ######MY full account key####### Nothing happened. I tried the above while boinc was active & while closed. Same result. Did I miss anything? Or has any else have another idea? TIA |

Try the account file, as per my post in the News and Announcements thread: here. Drop it into the appropriate place in the BOINC folders, re-start BOINC, and you should be there. |

Hi thanks for the reply Les, The post that you pointed to referred to the file account_climateprediction.net.xml. Which I took that to mean that I could just copy that file from one of my other working hosts and use it to attach with on the new host. Is that correct? After stopping boinc then copying that file from another attached host & then restarting boinc it did indeed try to attach but has so far failed to do so. Boinc is now stuck in a constant cycle of boinc trying to fetch "Fetching scheduler list" & then boinc saying.. Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down. Since project communications are working on my other rigs it seems i'm still in need of help. Thanks again |

In that case, it will not be possible to attach until the front page server is back on line. |

OK Les thanks anyway. Has anyone else been able to attach since the the front page went offline? If so how? PS When at first I couldn't attach I tried a few things out and one seemed to work. Instead of using "climateprediction.net" I used "http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/" instead which seemed to work OK & attached & downloaded both apps & work, the only problem was boinc started to complain that i'd attached using the wrong URL and when convenient to detach & re-attach to the usual "climateprediction.net". Which I did as I didn't want to take the risk of crunching days of work for nothing. But now i'm wondering what would have happened? Would the work have trickled & uploaded properly? Or not? I mean if the only problem was boinc telling me to re-attach then fine i'd do that after the front page came back up. I'm not suggesting anyone to do this, just wondering what would have happened for my own curiosity? Any thoughts? |

I've looked at my scheduler list, and it's set up to access the site via the front page. So trying to go directly to the BOINC pages will still cause problems. |

Not to worry, i'll just keep checking for an announcement or until I see the front page is back up again. Thanks again for the help. |

Has anyone else been able to attach since the the front page went offline? If so how? Attaching isn't a problem, you can use http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/ to attach since they've also including the link to scheduler on this page. While the BOINC-client will complain about using this address it will still work without any problems. I've for many years been attached to the "wrong" url for a project without having any problems appart for getting the "wrong address" on scheduler-requests. For anyone already attached but is stuck with needing to re-download master-page, a work-around is to edit the account_climateprediction.net.xml-file in the BOINC data-directory to use http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/ as the master-url (the 2nd. line in the file) and afterwards re-start the BOINC client. Then the homepage is finally back, it is just to re-edit the account-file to use http://climateprediction.net/ as master_url. This can be done even if you attached to the "wrong" url originally. BTW, while attaching isn't difficult to do, I immediately hit the Linux-bug of "missing libstdc++.so.6", a library so ancient it's not part of the repositories any longer meaning I've not got the foggiest idea how to install it. |

The instructions at the top of the linux section seemed to work for me towards the end of last year. |

Your "re-attach" method works great for a host I reset to clear a bunch of old ghost-wu's, thx. Has anyone else been able to attach since the the front page went offline? If so how? |

"Attaching isn't a problem" Oops for users already attached, who have an account_* file somewhere, yes "Attaching isn't a problem" But, for new clients, who don't have such, yes it is a problem. Makes it hard to recruit new (and old) users when they need an "account_*" file on their system already to sign up - Maybe some kind of magic redirection from the public sites -- I have no clue. New users can't sign up right now -- is that correct? |

Hi everyone, Sorry about that - yes, the website was under attack just before Christmas, so our sys admin had to take it offline. We're just working to get it back up online now - I'll update you when it's running again. I hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year! Best wishes, Hannah Hannah Rowlands -- No longer Communications Officer for climateprediction.net, as of October 2015 |

"Attaching isn't a problem" Well, I can't at the moment test if it's possible to make a new account, since I'm stuck at a Linux-computer with no possibility to run BOINC... For everyone that already has an acccount, manages to find these pages and also manages to login their own account on these web-pages, it's fairly easy to make an account-file if for some reason it's not possible to just attach to http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/ by manually typing this into BOINC Manager... Goto http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/weak_auth.php and use notepad (or similar) to make, as marked in bold, a file called account_climateprediction.net.xml in your BOINC data-directory. For the contents, at the moment you'll need to use http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/ for PROJECT_URL and for WEAK_ACCOUNT_KEY you can use either the weak account-key listed on the web-page or the "normal" account-key listed on the "Your account"-page. After successfully editing and saving account_climateprediction.net.xml, just re-start BOINC. |

Has anyone else been able to attach since the the front page went offline? If so how? Thanks for your input Ingleside. As I mentioned in my post I was attached using the URL you mentioned but after boinc started complaining that I detach & then re-attach using the regular URL I decided it wasn't worth the risk of losing countless hours of work & detached. If the front page doesn't come back up in the next day or so i'll re-attach using http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/ as the URL, now that I know it's safe to do so. Thanks for the tip. |

Well, it aint easy for new joiners to this site. Right, have an account, finds these pages -- yeah -- we need better way for recruiting. Super-caring ancient geezers who watch these lists -- might be able to contribute. But it's not easy for newcomers |
