I have Subscribed on two of my PCs, but the workhorse already runs Hyper-V virtual machines 24/7. I understand Oracle's VirtualBox and Windows Hyper-V aren't very compatible. Is there anyway of getting the climateprediction.net distributed simulations running on my Hyper-V machine? Many thanks, Jon |

The biggest problem that you face, is that there haven't been many Windows models released over the last few months. And when a few thousand have become available, the thousands of Windows computers soaked them up in less than an hour. |

Thanks for the reply Les, and are you saying there's no point contributing to climateprediction.net using a Windows PC as there are already more than enough contributing? |

VirtualBox isn't necessary. You can run 32 bit Ubuntu in a VM in Hyper-V and then run the Linux work units. |

It depends on why you want to contribute. If it's because you're really interested in climate research, then by all means join in. But it may take you a while to get work. If 'it's because you want to do something with your computer, then, yes, we ARE grossly over supplied, especially now that people are using 32, 64, and more cores on their computers. And the models are becoming much more detailed, which means that they're running more slowly for a longer time. |

OK, if you do want to try the Linux path, then you need to know that we've found out experimentally that the current crop of Linux models need at least 4 Megs of L3 cache each, to work at a reasonable speed. See this thread for the discussion. (Down near the start.) And they don't checkpoint very often, so that they need to be left running for VERY long periods. Also, see this thread for a message from the project's co-ordinator about these models. |

Thanks both - will look into the linux version. length of time not so important as hyper-v running 24/7 anyway. I do want to contribute to climate change research, so will stick it out and see how much I can contribute. |

In that case, welcome to the project. |
