Since I installed the newest version of BOINC and completed a WU, on power up or restart of BOINC I get an error window: \"BOINC Runtime Exception -108 File Operation Failure Failed to reopen stdout (file name varies) for diagnostics redirection (overwrite) Filename: \"\\Boincsrc\\Main\\boinc_public\\lib\\diagnostics.C\' Line: \'93\'\" Followed by a message window \"Failed to cleanup the Windows Sockets Interface\" I\'m running on WinXP SP2, 3.00 Intel P4 w/HT, 2GB of ram. Any clues? Thanks! |

I have seen similar errors on Win XP Home when two users are logged on. Boinc runs in one of the sessions and "hangs" in the other. I have also seen errors when running Boinc and a scheduled Norton Antivirus scan runs. I have assumed it to be a file locking issue but haven't really nailed it down. |

Is this something that will fix itself eventually or needs some sort of intervention? If so, what? There's only one user that's active on the computer, mine, which also has admin rights for XPPro. Thanks! |

I've had a look at the BOINC source code, and the "Failure to cleanup the Windows Socket Interface" message isn't as bad as it sounds. BOINC has detected that it's already running and has closed the new instance. But there's a coding error which means the exit routine calls the socket cleanup function without ever having setup the socket interface, and that's generating the error. If you have BOINC as an all users <i>and</i> individual user startup item you'll get this error every time you login in. If you're running XP <i>and</i> are in the habit of switching between users <i>and</i> have BOINC as a startup item for all users you'll also get the error box each time you log an extra user in. <br><a href="http://www.teampicard.net"><img src="http://www.teampicard.net/templates/fisubice/images/phpbb2_logo.jpg"></a><a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/team_display.php?teamid=3">Join us here</a> |
