I would be very happy to crunch CPDN on my macs again.
Do you have any timeline?
Can I also help you to test the new application in CPDN beta test? - I have a long BOINC history in porting and testing... Also as volunteer beta tester for CPDN..
2) Message boards : Number crunching : Dotsch/UX 1.2 released (Message 39281)

Post:
Today I have released Dotsch/UX 1.2.

Dotsch/UX is a Linux distribution for BOINC which easily installs and boot from a USB stick, hard disk and from diskless clients and also has some interfaces to setup the diskless server and the clients automatically.

For more informations have a look at http://www.dotsch.de/Dotsch_UX

New features in 1.2 :
• Build in NVIDIA CUDA support, a additional tool to enable and check the NVIDIA CUDA support.
• Persistent Live CD mode for testing the distribution as Live CD and store the data on a USB stick/disk
• Automated and semiautomatic backup of the BOINC client data and some other OS data
• Included Ganglia for performance monitoring of the Dotsch/UX Grids
• Pre Installed BOINC client 6.10.17
• Removed a lot of unneeded packages in the x86 and x64 distribution
• A lot of bug fixes and enhancements

Special thanks to all the peoples which supported and helped to make the new distribution possible !

I am working on a new Dotsch/UX 1.2 release in the moment in the alpha test. A closed beta test phase will follow the next days.

Mayor changes are CUDA implementaion and CUDA tools, Live CD persistent home directory mode, a Grid Perfomance mointoring tool, integrated backup over network and to local devices, and a lot of enhancements and fixes.

I would very happy, if anybody would been interested to help beta test the new release. The beta test would start at the mid/end of the comming week.
Please contact me via PM, if you are interested in Beta test the new release.

If you would install the offical BOINC client from boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php, you have the right platform string and could crunch all projects without problem.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Dotsch/UX - A USB/Diskless/Harddisk BOINC Linux Distribution (Message 36294)

Post:
Today I have released Dotsch/UX 1.1. Mayor changes are the availability of a 32 bit (i386) and 64 bit (x64) distribution, mixed i386 and x64 diskless client on one single diskless server, build in BOINC client 6.4.5 and bug fixes
for the USB, hard disk, diskless server and diskless client Installation tools.

The distribution is available at http://www.dotsch.de/Dotsch_UX
6) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : 64-bit client (ia64) not receiving work (Message 36040)

However there may be 3rd party apps for some of the projects, I\'m pretty sure they are available for SETI.

Yes. SETI and SIMAP supports Linux on IA64.

The USB and diskless part was not tested with CPDN. Due the special hardware (disk space) requirements of the CPDN project, and eventualy corruption of the long term data due media failures, I am not shure, if it\'s a good idea to ran CPDN from a USB stick or diskless client. But the hard disk install should work well...
8) Questions and Answers : Wish list : PS3 Client? (Message 32415)
Posted 31 Jan 2008 by Dotsch
Post:
To make usage of the full perfomance of the PS3, the source must complete rewritten and adapted to the PS3. - This is a lot of work.

In the moment the BOINC projects PS3Grid, SETI and yoyo supports the PS3 with all SPEs (full perfomance of the PS3). SIMAP and Einstein has applications which use the PPE (=the main CPU) of the PS3. The PPE applications perfoms comparable with a G4 or G5 Mac.
9) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : will CPDN run on Solaris SPARC (Message 30109)

Post:
SETI and SIMAP are the only projects which supports Solaris at SPARC in the moment. Eventualy has Einstein a Solaris application soon.
10) Message boards : Number crunching : Optimised app available ? (Message 29872)

Post:

the problem with backing up the boinc data folder on mac is that permission issues prevent the folder from copying or being moved which makes life pretty difficult

It is no problem, when the backup task is running as root, for example with sudo.
I do regulary backups (as root) via tar. For example \"sudo tar -cvpzf backupfile.tar.gz /Library/Application \\Support/BOINC \\Data\". Restore with \"sudo tar -xvpf backupfile.tar.gz\".
In the moment I do this with while BOINC is complete stopped. Btw. Is it OK to suspend the CPDN application and do the backup then ?
11) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : PPC linux (Message 29472)

SETI and SIMAP are the only BOINC based projects which supports Linux on PPC. - For MacOS on PPC are a lot of more projects with have supported applications.

Hm, I could not reproduce your failure, because my Mac is at repair in the moment. After I get em back in the mid/end of this week, I will try to reproduce this failure.
Btw. why did you not running the graphical BOINC client on your Mac ? - The CPU and memory overhead of the GUI and graphic stuff is absoutly minimal, and the \"show graphics\" works very well.
Which BOINC version do you have running ?

15) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : 64 bit processor (Message 29253)
Posted 14 Jun 2007 by Dotsch
Post:
How is the situation today? Why CPDN don\'t have 64bit applications? ABC and RieselSieve are have a lot better performance on LINUX 64bit than on 32bit. So the power user crunch rather ABC or RieselSieve than CPDN. I think, some users (me too) will come back with a bunch of PCs to CPDN when 64bit applications are available.

The increase of the performance depends very strongly on the application and of the architecture and the OS.
A very good increasement is about 20 %. Mostly there will a perfomance benefit from about 5 to 10 %. But, it could also be, that the 64 bit application runs slower than the 32 bit application.
16) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Send me email on failures (Message 29198)
Posted 8 Jun 2007 by Dotsch
Post:
With the boinccmd tool, it is posible to connect to the BOINC client and verify the status of the WUs and running tasks, etc. So I think, with a little shell skript, it is posible to monitor the BOINC client, the system, and the CPU utilistation.
But a monitor feature in the BOINC client would also be nice.
17) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Migrating a model from Windows to Tiger (Message 29068)
Posted 30 May 2007 by Dotsch
Post:
There are md5 checksums for the binaries and the WU files. If you change the binary from a not finished model, it would change the md5 sum and reset the model.
I think, the best solution is to finish your current modell it with Parallels, VmWare or CrossOver - or let them finish on your Windows system and download a new model on your Mac.
I have made a good expirance with running a CPDN model at crossover on MacOS Intel. CrossOver had the less overhead in crunchingtimes compared with Parallels. - But, I have tested it with a older Parallels Beta.

There is a list of the different projects, there recommendations and crunchingtimes (measured at a 2 GHz system) at the BOINC wiki : http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Choosing_a_BOINC_Powered_Project

Thanks for involving us. Will the beta credits transfer to the project?

The beta credits are still included in the main CPDN stats.
At your account page, under \"Credit From Other Affiliated climateprediction.net Projects\" under \"Beta Testing\" are my beta credits listed.

Is this still in beta? Going to the applications list the mac program was installed on the 11th. I added my intel mac on the 12th of April. Have sent many trickles since then. Are we going to get credit for work done?

Beta is a seperate project with seperate beta applications.
The application which would used here in the main project is the stable application.
