1) Message boards : Number crunching : version 6.4.7 (Message 36636)
Posted 7 Apr 2009 by old_user105019
Post:
I just got a message on the BOINC manager that there is a new version of Boinc, 6.4.7. Have they worked the bugs out of 6.4 yet? Are you still recommending that people running ClimatePrediction stick with 6.2.19?

The 6.4.x series is no longer being worked on (it\'s still buggy as far as I know), and the 6.6.x series is currently still being tested. If you don\'t need the CUDA capability of the 6.4/6.6 clients, then 6.2.19 is probably still your best bet.

2) Message boards : Number crunching : HADAM3P's too much RAC weight? (Message 36576)
Posted 31 Mar 2009 by old_user105019
Post:
The RAC is just a measure of average performance over time, as you know, so if your PC is capable of RAC=1000 for example, then you let it run 24/7 but disconnect from the internet for a week, your RAC will drop exponentially over the time disconnected to around 500 or so.
When it is reconnected, you may get 7000 credits or something crazy, but your RAC should only pop back to 1000 again; no more, no less.
Or is the RAC equation more complex than this???

Assuming that it is still the same formula used as listed here, then there is a higher weight attached to recent credit than older credit. If you trust my maths and the simplified cases, the following examples can show this. I\'ve assumed that credit and RAC are only calculated once per day, and that RAC was stable at the start.

Case 1 - 1000 credits per day added. RAC stays permanently at 1000

Case 2 - Upload turned off for a week. After 7 days the RAC will have dropped to 500. On day 8, 8000 credits will be added (1000 per day of running time). After the calculation on day 8 though, the RAC is now 1207.07 even though you have only produced 1000 credits per day. This will obviously decay back to 1000 over a couple of weeks.

Hope this helps

3) Questions and Answers : Windows : HadCM3, time of completion: 1378hr??? (Message 35333)
Posted 22 Oct 2008 by old_user105019
Post:
Hi everybody,
I\'m new here and I have started my first run in climateprediction. However, according to Boinc, there 1387hr until completion!!! whereas in comparison to Worldcommunity grid, it is usually only 6 to 10hr per run.
Is it normal?
Thank you for your help

There are different types of model available from Climateprediction.net but they are all much longer than most other BOINC projects, and the time you have quoted seems reasonable for the model type you have. You currently have an 80 year HADCM3 which is one of the longer types. Information how the models work and the requirements is here, along with information on how to select different types of model. You might also want to look through the general readmes here.

Hope this helps

I received in past a workunit, and i formated my hdd, can i get it back ? or to cancel it ?

Unless you made a backup of the files before formatting your hard disk, then no, neither of these is possible.

5) Questions and Answers : Windows : upgrade to boinc 6.2.16 (Message 34632)

OK, I\'ll have to find out how to restart BOINC.

There are a couple of ways of restarting BOINC that work for me

1. Click Start - Run and then enter \'net start boinc\' (without the apostrophes). Then in BOINC Manager click Advanced - Select computer. Leave the boxes blank and just click OK to connect to localhost.

2. Exit BOINC Manager completely, then relaunch it. This should start the core client as well.

Hope this helps

6) Questions and Answers : Windows : HADAM3 Question (Message 34520)

Post:
The HADSM3 slab model I just finished came out good, no errors. The s/ts was 1.33 or 2.33. This model says 21.70-21.77 s/ts. Is this normal for different models to have different s/ts?

This is quite normal. The HADAM model you are now running is a higher resolution 1 year model, as opposed to the HADSM model which models 45 years at lower resolution.

Detailed information on the models can be found here.

Hope this helps

7) Questions and Answers : Windows : HadCM3 not allowing anything else to run? (Message 34128)
Posted 23 Jun 2008 by old_user105019
Post:
I\'ve had Boinc installed for several months, initially with just Seti@home, then later with climateprediction as well, configured 50/50. Over time, Seti seems to have been pushed out by cp such that now, Seti hasn\'t run in weeks or possibly months.

<snip>

Is this normal? Seems awfully piggish for climateprediction to be working on tasks for 4 months solid.

I really just want it only getting 50% of the available resources so that Seti can run. What do I need to do/check to make this work?

Yes this is normal. BOINC thinks that it will not be able to complete the workunit by the deadline when running under your normal resource share. The models you are running are simulating 160 years of climate, so they do take a long time. Over the long term, BOINC will honour your resource share, as a debt is built up to SETI. When the climateprediction models have finished, SETI will run for the equivalent time it would have had, if the 50/50 split had always been used. Only after this debt is paid will climateprediction download new work.

If you want to keep your resource share in the shorter term, you can switch to only running shorter models (this doesn\'t affect the ones you are currently working on). You can do this as follows

Log into your account at
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/home.php
Click on the climateprediction.net preferences option in the Preferences section.
Under application preferences you will see the different types of model you can run. You will need to deselect the UK Met Office HADCM3 models, by clicking Edit climateprediction.net preferences at the bottom of the page, and then unchecking the relevant tick box. Make sure you update preferences when finished.

Hope this helps

Can someone please tell me how to get my team registered with the climateprediction.net as when I search it is not shown. I have this team on all my other projects but it is not showing anywhere here.......Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

9) Questions and Answers : Windows : Task Suspended; Will Not Resume (Message 33607)
Posted 29 Apr 2008 by old_user105019
Post:
I suspended my two hadam3 tasks under the TASK TAB at the 70 hour and 16 hour point but have been unable to RESUME processing. Under the Task Tab, the status shows \"suspended-computatio..\". There is no entry under Projects tab status. I am using a Vista Premium machine with 1.9 ghz dual core and 2gb of memory. Hold in memory is activated. By the way, the progress at this point on the tasks is only 14.2% and 3.2%. Should I abort and start over. The machine was shut down over night without any impact.

Have you selected the models you wish to resume? Depending on your version of BOINC, you might need to select each model individually. Could you select one model and then see if the resume button appears.

10) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Hide Computers (Message 33516)

Post:
Hi.

How can I hide my computers in the account data?
I see, that other users can hide parts or every information about the active computers.

Thanks
MaD

Hi MaD

To hide your computers, do the following. Log into your account page, and look for the Preferences section. Click View or edit on the second option, climateprediction.net preferences. On this preferences page, scroll down to the bottom and click Edit climateprediction.net preferences. You should now see an option labelled Should climateprediction.net show your computers on its web site?. Click the no option, and your computers will be hidden.

Please note that if you have problems with your computer or models, people will find it much harder to help you with hidden computers, as they will be unable to see any specific information, and will therefore have to rely on generalities.

Hope this helps

Cant log in to change password

Cant get access to log in without knowing the password to log in

(catch 22)

Hi Gordon

As long as you know your email address, you can use this page to have the account key sent to you
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/get_passwd.php

Then you will need to log into your account using the account key, which should then give you the ability to change the password.

Hope this helps

14) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : sec/TS (Message 27524)
Posted 26 Mar 2007 by old_user105019
Post:
There are actually 4,147,560 timesteps in a full model, which at 4.81 s/TS equates to 5541.6 hours (just under 231 days) crunching.

They simplify a year a bit to make the modelling easier, so the maths actually is

72 timesteps per day * 30 days per month * 12 months per year * 160 years which makes 4147200 timesteps. The remaining 360 timesteps are to do with the way the model is programmed I believe, but I can\'t remember the exact reason. I think it is to ensure that the final data transmission point is reached, but I stand to be corrected on this.

Carl recently added in credits from the pre-BOINC classic CPDN. You have 46,031 classic credits, which will be where the increase came from.
