I should probably also point out that my Windows box is running hadsm3 4.12. I think the percentage done reset is new to v4.13.

Hi, gang.

I noticed that CC v4.43 changed client_state.xml enough to break BOINCprog 1.1.3. I\'ve fixed it so that BOINCprog 1.1.4 should be happy with any core client from v4.07 through v4.43 (and likely 4.44, but I haven\'t tested it yet).

You can grab it at Trane\'s Programming Projects:

Enjoy!

Hi, Les. I'm seeing the behaviour on hadsm3 4.13. It seems to have an interesting side effect that as the phase nears 100%, the core client downloads another WU, thinking that it'll soon be out of work. This happened under CC 4.43 Windows and CC 4.19 Linux. On the Linux box, I've upgraded to 4.43 so that the improved scheduler will have a chance to 'panic' and ensure that both WUs are completed in time. On the Windows box, I'm doubtful that any amount of panic will get the second WU done because the machine is a fairly old 800 MHz P-III.

I originally thought that it was a core client problem that caused the Windows system to download the new CPDN unit immediately after the upgrade to 4.43. That may indeed be the case, but it doesn't explain how my 4.19 core client downloaded a new unit as it neared the end of phase 1 on this model run. As such, I now consider this % resetting between phases to be a bonafied bug.

Cheers.

I\'ve noticed that recently downloaded models reset the % completed field at each phase change. Not that it matters to the science, but I rather dislike this. I prefer 100% to be 100%, not 33.333% or 66.666% or 100% depending on the phase.

Not that it\'s the end of the world or anything. Just my opinion.

Make sure that you kill the BOINC client and not any of the tasks running under it. If you kill CPDN's task, you will surely lose work. CPDN runs a monitor under BOINC that handles the interprocess comms and ensures safe shutdown of the project. A "kill pid" works fine for this.

I do wish that I could say all is great with 4.19, but I'm getting stalled apps here on my Linux box. That requires a kill/restart to fix. Ick.

I've got a couple of results that can be recycled, too:

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=281738

In the first, the machine died a horrible death at the hand of an mutinous power supply. The second machine was detached when I realized there was no way it could possibly finish the work unit within the deadline.

That's pretty much it. When the BOINC 4.6x (or higher) client is finally released, you won't need to worry about that anymore because you'll have a nice GUI like those Windows people. In the meantime, you might want to try the SETI@BOINC Tracker beta. I dunno, I use my own BOINCprog under Linux, so I'm not really familiar with the Mac Add-ons.

Ouch. :-(

That just motivated me to back up $HOME.

I run BOINC as a cron job:

# Start BOINC
*/10 * * * * cd /home/trane/boinc; ./boinc_4.19_i686-pc-linux-gnu 1>>./boinclog
2>>./boincerr

Set up the job under your normal user account. It will start automatically regardless of whether you're logged in.

When you change operating systems, BOINC creates a new host ID because of differences in possible results from the system.

> computing projects (very long time), I'm just baffled as to why it was
> designed without some sort of state saving.

I think it probably has something to do with CPDN under BOINC being a port of the stand-alone application. In such a scenario where CPDN wouldn't be competing for CPU time with other projects, the potential for losing CPU time is drastically reduced. I agree it could be greatly improved. Apparently, a future version of BOINC will take checkpoints into account when swapping processes, so we won't be losing work on that front. Unfortunately, I don't see much chance of solving the 144-timestep issue.

CPDN is noted for having checkpoints that are very far apart. If you close BOINC often, it's possible that the project is being shutdown before it gets to its next checkpoint, which would effectively nix any progress for the WU. If you're just suspending/hibernating the system, that shouldn't cause any trouble.

For the same reason, I also have my preferences set to keep applications in memory when paused.

BTW, just to be on the safe side, I manually exit BOINC when shutting down the system.

> If the host has ever downloaded a WU, it cannot be deleted.

This is a 'null' host. There is no name, no info, no downloads, nothing whatsoever. When I try to delete it, the message "Host deletion is disabled for now, sorry!." is displayed. Moreover, hosts that have downloaded a WU can be deleted as long as they have not returned a trickle. I know, I've done it.

Any idea when we\'ll see host deletion enabled again? I\'ve got a \"null\" host in my account that I\'d like to clear away.
