It happened while LHC has been completely unreachable, not sure if the problem is related to that but the chance is quite high as it immediately tried to upload a bunch of LHC results which of course failed.

After stopping BOINC again, I saw that hadsm3um_4.03_windows_intelx86.exe was still running although all other BOINC processes have been gone. This might be a reason for this failure too of course.

BOINC 4.13 / Win2k SP4 / Dual Athlon MP 2600+

I have saved all XML and project files and will report the two damaged WUs now :

<a>resultid=268718</a>
<a>resultid=261770</a>

If you need any of the files to help figure out the problem, I can upload them to some web space.

&gt; It looks to me like your system used to have hyper-threading enabled in the
&gt; BIOS but has been rebooted with the option disabled, Stuart.

Wouldn't the host status page say "Number of CPUs : 1" then?

Could be a "Venue" problem too, if @Home is set to use only 1 CPU and the Xeon used to be @Work but switched to @Home for some reason (the Venue setting sometimes gets lost)

In this case it would be safer to set it to 2 CPUs @Home too

&gt; you can remove it, the intention was that we had hoped people have lots of
&gt; hard drive space in case we get an interesting result and you can upload some
&gt; more files. Sort of like if you were running SETI, and it took a month to run
&gt; one workunit, but your computer found the alien it would be nice to get more
&gt; info back rather than put it over to a supercomputer and wait! ;-)

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=26793

Doesn't look like a successful upload somehow ...

Different problem than http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1131 but there seems to be something quite unstable with those final uploads

@groucho : If you don't like your alien, send it to me plz., I am mighty curious about it :-)

gstate.init has only very few error conditions :

- something is wrong with the directory structure and they cannot be created
- something is wrong with the account file(s)

I cannot tell you more exact but maybe this gives you an idea what to look for.
Maybe the line above this last line helps to find out more.

If it is some file / directory damage, a scandisk might help btw., especially if you're on FAT/FAT32 file system.

If you cannot figure it out, maybe post stdout.txt and especially stderr.txt here.

The setting you are talking about must be "Connect to network about every xxx days"

This is a misunderstanding - it does not tell BOINC to connect every 10th day but to keep a work buffer for at least xxx days.

You can disable LAN access for BOINC only through the "file" menu (Windows GUI version).

If LAN access is not diabled, it will connect each time it has finished something or needs a new model or sends out a trickle.

If BOINC is not working on a model / work unit but still shows activity in the task manager, the reason might be that it tries to connect or updates the graphics on the tabs "Disc" or "Work".

Try setting the tab to "Messages" and the BOINC program itself will use less CPU. Minimize it to the tray should do the same.

You could try to create the file account_climateprediction.net.xml from an existing one of a different project with

[master_url]http://climateprediction.net/[/master_url]
[authenticator](yours)[/authenticator]
[project_name]climateprediction.net[/project_name]

Not too much project specific in it, just two tags

[color_scheme]Tahiti Sunset[/color_scheme]
[name_old](your account here I think)[/name_old]

and then restart the client.

A (not perfect) solution that _should_ work if you run boinc_cli.exe as a service or work on a unix :

- keep 2 copies of global_prefs.xml on your HD, one with {max_cpus}2{/max_cpus} and one with {max_cpus}1{/max_cpus}

Everytime you want to switch the number of CPUs :

- shutdown BOINC using "net stop BOINC" or kill it with the PID from the process list

- copy global_prefs.xml.1 or global_prefs.xml.2 to global_prefs.xml

- restart BOINC

This will only work until BOINC updates the preferences from the project server, so it might work acceptable with CPDN most of the time. If you have projects that contact the server more often, it will not help so much though.
________

If it does not work so well, this might be worth a try :

For @work set "On multiprocessors, use at most 1 processors"
For @home set "On multiprocessors, use at most 2 processors"

Everytime you want to switch the number of CPUs :

- shutdown BOINC (same as above)

- in client_state.xml set the entry {host_venue} to work or home

- restart BOINC

The modification of the venue can be done with sed or awk on Unix, on Windows you can use findstr in a batch file.

In this case using just 2 copies with different venues will not work as the file is updated frequently - it would do damage to your models if you tried that.

A minor bug :

If a user name ("aaa bbb") contains a space, this currently will generate something like

".../search.php?search_author=aaa" bbb=""

Would be better to use htmlentities() on the user name before generating links for it :

".../search.php?search_author=aaa%20bbb"
31) Questions and Answers : Windows : trickles not uploading after downloading BOINC v4.13 on WIN XP (Message 5383)

Could well be just an update problem on the web site. It didn't add trickles for more than 24 hours now.

If the server contacts the scheduler now and then (1-2 contacts / day), without you having done anything and the scheduler result is "succeeded" (message window), the trickles should count.

It has been the same a few days ago, no trickles counted for some time, but then they all came, the ones that have been missed showed up too even with the correct trickle time.

Just make sure that "disable BOINC network access" is not checked in the menu.

p.s.: not guaranteed of course, could be a 4.12/4.13 related problem too.
32) Questions and Answers : Windows : Project paused (Message 5335)

Another possible reason :

It's CPU time what it counts there, not realtime. I had such an effect when I had 2 tasks on a dual CPU machine but needed to finish a few Seti Classic WUs - but of course didn't want to stop BOINC for that or set it to 1 CPU only.

So if you use a lot of CPU time for something else or if your computer goes into power saving mode sometimes, realtime and CPU time for the BOINC tasks can differ a lot.

&gt; Welcher Strich?

I had such a problem with Seti Classic already - but it happened only on FAT file system, never on NTFS.

So although FAT is slightly faster and NTFS is accessible only from certain operating systems (only important on complete system crashes), NTFS is better for applications that run all the time.

edit: Just in case, you could put a small batch file to your "autostart", that copies all XML files from the BOINC base directory to a backup location somewhere else on your HD.

&gt; I have more than 700 MB free on my disk and boinc can use more than 1GB so i
&gt; don't know what to do

The setting (general preferences)

"Use no more than xx% of total space"

might be a problem too. If you have 1GB free but allow only 50% for BOINC, it still might not fit.
___

If you use NTFS you can compress complete directories btw., right-click them in Explorer and in the properties you'll find "Compress". Can save quite much space on certain folders. This compression is transparent, you can still use them like "normal" folders.

Post:
&gt; hmmm, it sounds like the client_state.xml file in boinc got messed up. There
&gt; may be a backup file (named "client_state_prev.xml") that you could experiment
&gt; with copying over?

Similar problem, different question :

Something similar happened to me too while attaching to S@H - system freeze and had to reinstall BOINC. Both client_state(_prev).xml didn't contain those two (it's a 2-CPU machine) Climate models anymore so they are lost for this run.

Now the question :

Wouldn't it make sense for a project with long running work units to find a way to invalidate them? If it works like it does now, the first chance that those models will be delivered again will be in about one year so the result might arrive in maybe two years - needs a lot of patience for the project scientists :-/
