And to Edward Wright, who recently completed his 50th climate model, counting all the different types.

Well done, both!

Gee thanks :)

My first iceworld :) The globe is blue.

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=8423384.

I'm at TS 253706 (99.47%), doing 1.23s/TS, though in reality for well over 24 hours now it has said 2 hours remaining. I'm using Windows XP SP2, C2D E6750, 2.66GHz, with 2GB of RAM. I don't have any higher-priority processes running; the work unit is taking 50% CPU i.e. one saturated core.

Should I let it run (it'll take weeks) or abort? The science results matter more to me than any credits. I notice another user with the same work unit has already aborted at the same point.

I forget the details, but I think that the hardware of Macs has a rather limited area for the stacks, compared to the other processors.

... but the hardware of Macs is the same as PCs, really, it\'s exactly the same CPU chip and chipset. This must be a software problem. I can understand the OS allocating less stack space that other operating systems, but each process is treated in isolation, there is no global stack space (not true for shared memory however), and one version of the model works, another doesn\'t. Perhaps I\'ll revert to BOINC 5.x once my current model is finished; I never had this problem with it.

Well, the error message is that it doesn\'t have enough stack space, so perhaps you\'ll have to settle for one model at a time.

Thanks for the response. There\'s something I don\'t get there, because each process has a stack, be it Mac, Windows or Linux. Strange.

Here we go again... more failures.

This time a Mac which is happily running a 5.39 80 year model refuses to work with the 6.04 version. The machine is running OS X 10.5.6 and yes, I\'ve quadrupled the shared memory settings. BOINC 6.2.18.

I\'ve stopped the machine accepting new models until I know what\'s causing this. Again a Fortran compiler issue? While running 5.39, what models could this machine run? The current model has some time to go yet.

It is sometimes the case that a \'phantom\' work unit appears server-side but not in BOINC Manager. The usual explanation for this is that the download transaction didn\'t complete. I\'ve had a couple of these: untidy but benign.

Ok, thanks for the info - and correctly re-filing my post :) I did see some HTTP server errors in my log while the new work units were being requested.

The 3rd unit failed with computation error.
I am complaining that insufficient notice of this is given to crunchers in my thread
All hadcm3ivolc units fail
You will see the explanation and remedy using preferences in that thread (from Thyme Lawn).

On my Mac all volc units fail. You are using the other fortran compiler where they do succeed.

Keith[/quote]

Actually, I did do something a bit silly, posting in the Mac\' Q&A section when the host in question is running Windows XP! I am using two Macs as well, but this time it\'s not a Mac which has the problem. So whatever happened, I don\'t think it was the Fortran compiler issue. I have altered my prefs to avoid that problem with the Macs.

One of my machines finished two work units today, and according to the Boinc Manager, has two new ones. No problem. However, when I look at the info online, it suggests it has downloaded three new ones.

What\'s going on here?

I wonder whether the graphics application is crashing while the model continues. Cristoval, you could test the graphics card with help from Thyme Lawn\'s instructions and if necessary update the drivers. This is a free download from the web - no need to buy anything.

I suspect not, those instructions apply to Windows machines, not Macs.

This model died with \"Insufficient Memory/Stack Space Available!\", on a machine with 3GB of RAM and the shared memory settings 4x normal (OS X 10.5.6). BOINC 6.2.18 I believe. Another model died about the same time.

Any ideas why?

Well, it\'s all working fine at home, I think it must be as you say the browser or some caching proxy at work. Ho hum, never mind.

Speaking of statistics, if you go here, you get model data from Feb 1st. Strange. But if you go here, you get up-to-date model data. Odd that.

Hi, thanks for the info.

I think I\'ll hold off the move right now. You\'re right, the more CPUs the merrier. That and it\'d involve moving ~ 1.5GB of data between two countries!

Cheers,

Hi

I\'ve one machine which is crunching 24/7 and will finish two models in about two days time. I have another machine is which being used maybe 1 hour per day, and at the present rate will take 18 months to finish some of the work.

Once the 1st machine is done, can I transfer the models to the other machine? Both Core 2 Duo, both OS X 10.5.6 . The \"slow\" machine is on BOINC 5, the faster one BOINC 6, so I can upgrade to BOINC before any transfer. I assume the BOINC data directory does not contain information on the host, so I\'m not sure how it works when tasks jump between hosts. Maybe I can\'t do this.

I have upped the shared memory for BOINC 6 compatibility.

Many thanks in advance,

e

Thanks - too bad my other 160 year model died in 2060 or so.

That machine is only running one model now as it\'d due to finish in about a week, and then I\'ll upgrade to Boinc 6.

Both Edward Wright and Rory have now passed 500,000 credits in CPDN - very well done, chaps ;-)

Of course we\'re only really interested in the science here.

So who crossed the line 1st, Rory or yours truly? :D

Thanks for the encouragement, and yeah well done Rory.
