A reminder to all who are up for entering the SETI Sideshow (click on my sig for details) - it\'s starting this coming Sunday - just a week to go.

We\'d like to see a blitz on SETI for the two weeks whilst the Gauntlet is on. Support/involvement from other teams would also be good - it\'s all for a bit of fun and friendly competition. Who knows, we might get them to Sideshow Climate sometime...

Please join our sideshow to the Kings International Gauntlet 2007.

Team England were too late to enter the Gauntlet and have decided to support the Gauntlet by having a SETI Sideshow. All teams are welcome to join us.

The Team England SETI Sideshow will run in parallel to the Gauntlet and will start on Sunday the 4th of November 2007 at 20:00 hrs GMT+1 and will end at Sunday the 18th of November 2007 at 20:00 hr GMT+1.

There are no restrictions of how many or can crunch for SETI during the Sideshow, and even new joiners during the Sideshow can contribute.

Please join us. If we can\'t be in the gauntlet, then let\'s support it by crunching as much as we can in the Sideshow.

All you need to do to enter is to say that your team is in, and to publish a snapshot of your boincstats, or your own graphs, each day at the agreed time and keep your daily, cumulative and final credit scores. It\'s all for a bit of fun and to give SETI a bit of a boost. Oh, and may the best team win ;)

I wouldn\'t bother trying it again. These negative pressure results mean the model\'s produced climate that\'s impossible in the real world due to that combination of inital parameter values. An unstable computer eg too far overclocked can also produce impossible climate. But if you\'re sure the computer\'s running stably, then it means you got an impossible model. It took a long time to freak out.

If you look at its graph, you\'ll see that it\'s only just an outlier, above the usual upper temperatures.

Still, you have the satisfaction of knowing that you took it as far as it could go.

OK, thanks Mo. I\'ll leave this one be. (I\'m not running any clocked PCs.)

Some of us think that backups made by a ghosting program with boinc running will sometimes turn out to be restorable but not always. I suspect you\'ve had an example of each.

If you exit boinc before backing up the boinc folder, almost 100% of the backups will be perfect. But if you have a number of computers, I appreciate that the hassle of exiting boinc on all the machines may be too time-consuming to be worth while, particularly if your computers rarely crash models. Easier to make frequent backups with boinc running even if the odd one turns out not to run.

It will be interesting to see whether the model crashes again at the same point. If it does, it really will be impossible climate that the model itself has generated. This is probably the most likely outcome but you never know. Let us know what happens.

I take your point about the ghosting backup, and the risk v. time available to do a number of backups. But with a number of PCs I\'m crunching I doubt whether I would do manual backups, and with ghost at least I may have half a chance. (I\'m also doing some BBC and SAP as well as SETI, Einstein and Rosetta.)

I re-ran it, after upgrading to the latest version of BOINC, and also running it on a different (better) PC. But it crashed again at the (I think) identical point in May 2079. I took a (ghost) backup 30 minutes or so before it crashed the second time, and I expect I\'ll give it another re-run sometime, just out of curiosity, just in case ;)

When a cpdn model\'s complete the graph says 1920 - 2080 (BBC models said - 2081 for some unknown reason). So yours missed the last two trickles.

Are you sure that these auto backups presumably done with boinc and workunit running are really reliably restorable? When you restored the backup, did the model crunch at all? Surely it should have crunched for a little while, even a few minutes, until the negative value was created again. If the restored backup showed 100% complete immediately and without crunching, I wonder whether there was something wrong with the backup. Or was your auto backup scheduled to run after the model had already crashed?

If you are backing up frequently and saving at least the 2 most recent backup copies, what about trying to restore the previous backup of this model?

Some incomplete models are generating Over - Success - Done when they really shouldn\'t, but this is a separate issue.

Yes, I was puzzled that a backup taken just before the crash didn\'t run for a while after restore. My backups are reliable enough I think, Norton Ghost 12, and I\'ve gone to a backup 24 hours earlier at 98.5% which is now running with 49 hours to go.

Thanks for your help Mo, and to everyone else. I\'ve upgraded to this model to 5.10.20 and am hoping it won\'t trip again ;O)

I have no knowledge of the first and really don\'t want to know, but on the second I would say that was your opinion.

I hope CPDN start taking this team rivalry and credit scoring more seriously. Science is fair and obvious to you, but individuals scoring points from each other and banging on about \'friendly\' rivalry when it\'s so obvious that \'winning\' on credit is more important that the climate science to some, the oneupmanship is certainly not wanted in some cases.

Winning on credit seems to have become irrelevant to some since they can\'t win on credit. It\'s quite clear that \'completed models\' is a top bragging item for many, carried on many signatures in BBC CCE, for many months now, and may continue in mainstream CPDN. So please publish a clear definition of what a completed model is for the purpose of this bragging, and threaten to roast people alive if they abuse this to keep us all safe from any potential misunderstandings. It\'s only for the best in the long term, and will give some of us a good nights sleep. I hope you agree.

Now, can we get back to friendly games?

I think the whole issue has been well and truely discussed now in this thread, and I think on the whole we are all singing from the same hymn sheet.

Thanks Pete, that\'s what I wanted to hear. Let\'s get this crystal clear right now and not leave any misunderstandings, now or in the future, in BBC and also here in CPDN where it would be dreadful to find people would \'tactically\' prematurely abort a model at 2050 just to show how great their team is, or whatever.

I think Peter\'s right - I guess that when Carl said he was going to include 2050+ models in the front page figures, he was probably in a PR mood.

Ice! I challenge you (in the nicest possible way) to find a single post by a mod where any of us gave the impression that a 2050+ crashed model could just be abandoned because it had reached its target.

I think you may be missing the point here by looking at this through your CPDN/PR angle.

This is like a Blair/Bush spin. It doesn\'t matter what you think you said and how well you think you can challenge anyone on what you actually said.

The fact is that you have given an impression that models at 2050+ are complete. I expect some are confused about this.

The fact is that if someone decides to start up a \"models complete\" competition in BBC or CPDN, given the spin in place, anyone can stop crunching at 2050 and quicken their model completion by 30 years. No matter what you said or think you said.

Since you and the moderators have said much on this subject, in so many \"official\" and individual statements of encouragement which clearly indicate that a model is complete at 2050+, including the PR on the CPDN front page, I think you should make a definition of what is a \"complete model\" clear to both BBC and CPDN and reconcile this with Carl\'s PR on the CPDN web front page.

If Carl thinks a model is complete at 2050+, why do we need to carry on to 2080?

It\'s a rhetorical question, but illustrates the lunacy of the situation and why Blair/Bush type spin should never be welcomed anywhere.

Back in January I said in the news thread that Carl had started counting 2050+ as \'finished\' for the purposes of quoting completed models on the cpdn website front page. Here\'s the news item:

http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=5927&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

As far as I\'m aware, all the teams that are counting completed models have only ever counted 2080 as a goal. Could I respectfully suggest that the best idea is probably to keep it that way. Otherwise you could all spend weeks working out which extra models count and which don\'t. The BBC teams would probably also need to agree, which would complicate matters. I don\'t think it matters one bit that the cpdn front page uses a different criterion.

The teams all have a good easy-to-understand system and it\'s been the same from the start. I\'d stick to it.

It\'s easy for you to say that mo.v. But you, the moderators, have been telling people that, despite their models crashing at 2050+ they can consider their models are complete, thank you very much, please start another one in CPDN.

I think perhaps it is you that should say that, despite the fact that you have indicated a 2050+ model is complete, it is not, fact, complete for any criteria apart from what is being displayed in the CPDN front page. Which has got nothing to do with whether a model is complete or not (ie, 2080, zips uploaded, received, update acknowledged, credits allocated, goal by ref and linesman confirmed.)

Hi Rory,

The BUG toolbar requires Microsoft Windows 2000/XP and Microsoft Explorer 5.0+ (or Firefox 1.0.1+).

You can use the toolbar with AOL installed. However the E-mail notifier does not seen to cater for AOL - it includes Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and POP3.

You can, however, add further button for MSN Messenger, Outlook Express and others.

I hope this helps.

It installs very quickly if you want to try it, and has an unistaller if you decide it\'s not for you.

It has no spyware or viruses, does not open pop-ups or hijack your searches, and no personal information is required.

No mention of a Dragon in facts.
I have just purchased a Cross of St George air freshener which I will proudly display Monday, with only the slight reservation that people will label me a right wing thug for doing so.

pb

It\'s sad that anyone would be worried about flying an England flag for fear of being accused of being right wing thug. It\'s the sign of the times; a bad sign.

As for the dragon - it never was a fact. It was probably the English symbolizing their defeat over the Welsh dragon I expect - but as you can see, the dragon is still there on the flag of Wales.

But then again it was used to symbolize the Christian defeat over evil. But them so much about St. George is myth.

He\'s still the patron saint of England!

St. Georges\'s flag

Here is some information about St. George.

Saint George is the patron saint of England. He\'s popularly identified with England and English ideals of honour, bravery and gallantry - but actually he wasn\'t English at all. Very little, if anything, is known about the real Saint George. Pope Gelasius said that George is one of the saints \"whose names are rightly reverenced among us, but whose actions are known only to God.\"

Facts in brief

Everything about Saint George is dubious, so the information below should be taken as mythical rather than real.

  • Born in Turkey (in Cappadocia)
  • Lived in 3rd century AD
  • His parents were Christian
  • Later lived in Palestine
  • Became a Roman soldier
  • Protested against Rome\'s persecution of Christians
  • Imprisoned and tortured, but stayed true to his faith
  • Beheaded at Lydda in Palestine
  • 23rd April was named as Saint George\'s day in 1222

Patron saint

He is patron saint not only of England but also of Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany and Greece; and of Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice (second to Saint Mark). He\'s also patron saint of soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers, and he helps those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis. A lot of members belong to national teams which provide forums and/or websites in their own language, so that\'s a good thing. In fact, there are hundreds of unofficial boinc-related websites and forums for teams. A couple of our mods help provide support on French and Czech forums.

I think anybody running cpdn models is committed to the project, simply because of the size of the workunits and the effort involved in backing them up and so on.

I think Team England are committed to providing over 12 million BOINC credits so far.

Sorry Team Democratic Party, seemed to go off a bit of a tangent here - but good luck to your team :)

It\'s interesting for me to note that I first joined Team England over a year ago in BBC CPDN, but then left for the prime reason that I didn\'t think people should band together for nationalistic reasons. However, I now think that censorship by admin/moderators or by each other as to what teams are appropriate is, in itself, inappropriate. If people want to join Team England, let them!

(Not trying to criticize you in any way here Andy, just using what you said to make a point) Andy said \"I see you have set up this team in a number of Boinc projects. It is now clear to me that you have no real commitment to this project.\" Well, I have set up a Team England in almost all projects, the rest by other Team England members. So my commitment to this project must be pretty low, despite my current RAC of around 6000 in the various CPDN projects (see below).

It\'s possible that the vast numbers of crunchers have no real commitment to the projects they crunch in. They don\'t really understand them, never ask for proof that their completed models are used in any way (SETI has years worth of all crunching sitting idly on a shelf I am told). Let\'s be clear - the vast numbers don\'t post anything in any forum, therefore, prima facie, they show no interest. Most crunchers attach to a projects and seem to forget that it\'s running on their computers, the vast numbers never coming to any of these forums.

And what are these forums for and who is trying to tell who what should or should not be said, apart from the rules?

If you don\'t like a team, ignore it. If you don\'t like what somebody says, ignore them.

Voting for the new team BBC CCE team England founder, and the new BBC CCE team England name, will start on Tuesday 3rd April 2007, and will close on Sunday 8th April at midday.

To keep things easier and better for all the voting for both team Founder and Team Name will take place in the same way, at the same time.

To vote you must be a member of team England in BBC and/or CPDN.

The voting will be anonymous. Please send your votes by email to me at

If you prefer, you can send me a pm (private message) in the team England forum http://england.brilliantsite.com – send to “Ice”.

You can send one email for each vote separately, or you can send one for both Founder/Team Name votes.

The first vote you place counts – you cannot change it after you have voted.

I will copy all votes to the site admin and moderators at the England forum for scrutiny.

The majority vote wins; there is only one vote for each person for Founder/Team Name irrespective of how many teams in different projects you are in.

The following have expressed a wish not to be included voted for as Team Founder;

Martin_RS and myself.

Obviously it would be preferable that you vote for those that show a particular desire for the post, although it is up to you as to who you vote for. Canvasing is up to you - it\'s up to you to enlighten us on suitability as you feel appropriate.

The following team names have been suggested so far for your voting consideration;

team England CCE
team England UK
England UK
team England GB
England GB
Crunching for England
Crunchers for England
Team England BBC/CPDN
Boincing for England
BOINC England
England Experiments!

It is expected that the Founders of the various team England projects will bring the team names into line with that chosen for the BBC team.

Please send me your votes to from Tuesday onwards.

May the best person/team name win!

There is going to be a vote for a new founder for the BBC team England as part of the BBC to CPDN transition. (Decisions cannot be made about changing the team name until we decide who the new founder should be.)

Voting will start on Tuesday 3rd April 2007, and will close on Sunday 8th April 2007 at midday. (These dates are in line with the poll for the new team name.)

This allows some time for canvassing before the voting opens and, for example, declaring unwillingness to stand. For example, RS does not wish to stand since he already has his hands full with being founder of CPDN and SAP. So please don’t vote for him.

To vote you must be a member of team England in BBC and/or CPDN.

The voting will be anonymous. Please send your votes by email, stating the name as displayed in the BBC and/or CPDN team to me at

ice dot baron at gmail dot com, ie, in the format of one.two@three.com

If you prefer, you can send me a pm (private message) in the team England forum http://england.brilliantsite.com – send to “Ice”.

The first vote you place counts – you cannot change it after you have voted.

I will display progress of the voting, but will not disclose who voted for who, on the team England forum http://england.brilliantsite.com. I will pass all voting emails sent to me to the site-admins of the forum for scrutiny.

The majority vote wins; there is only one vote for each person irrespective of how many teams in different projects you are in.

As part of the move from BBC to CPDN it has been suggested that team England should have a brand new name.

Unfortunately the \'England\', \'team England\' etc, names were taken up early on and the founders gone into a coma. What we suggest is that members of team England propose names (not already taken) that we can vote on next week in a poll.

We already have some names put forward;

\"Team England UK\", \"England UK\", \"Team England GB\", \"England GB\", \"Crunching for England\", \"Crunchers for England\".

If you want to submit a name you must be a member of team England in BBC and/or CPDN and registered on the new team England forum http://england.brilliantsite.com to place your suggestions for the poll (the management have the right to discount inappropriate suggestions).

The place to put your suggestions is in this thread

Suggestions will be closed this coming Monday 2 April 2007 at midnight.

On Tuesday 3 April we will start a poll so that all team England members registered on the new team England forum can vote for their preferred choice. The poll will close on Sunday 8 April at midday.

Hey Anton,
I\'m so tempted to make a copy of your post and under the Greenpeace link have it go to an Australian Army recruiting site 8-D They\'re desperate for more recruit’s and they just sent a heap away on another peace keeping mission.

Army = Green, Mission = peace. I don\'t think everyone would appreciate my ironically sense of humour though ;-)

Hi Mike,

I\'m with you sense of humour here Mike, or is it just fair logic?

The word green has alternate meanings, and perhaps I\'d like to extend your definition a little to Army = green = Do you know what you\'re doing? and Mission = peace = Don\'t shoot.

If they don\'t know what they\'re doing, don\'t shoot and maybe don\'t even go there in the first place?

Don\'t join the Army - join Greenpeace - click on the dove below:

The timestep should be in the graphic. If not press \"Z\" to hide the side panel, and it give you more information like in the previous climateprediction.net models. Also, the trickle is uploaded at 0030 GMT on December 1st of each model year.
If you press 8 after the Z you will see the next checkpoint. When this counts down to zero it writes from memory to your hard disc. This is the best time to exit your model (for backup etc) since at any other point if you clear your memory, eg when restarting your PC, you will lose a little crunch and have to redo that little on resume.

Arnolfini, I to am sorry to see you have this problem. Sometime earlier I myself was asking why they were calling it a screen saver, when it was best not to run it for the reasons given about slowing your model down, so how can it be a screen saver? It\'s like Les says, difficulty with terminology aimed at an audience who are familiar with the term \'screen saver, but will be able to consider advice of those suggesting you should use in only sparingly.

You are right, a screen saver should do what it suggests, save your screen. But this one \'will\' do just that, since it will save the planet, and your screen on it :)

Generally I just move old completed/crashed (none yet) models to another location until I have enough to fill a DVD then burn them off.

This keeps the CPDN Boinc Directory under 1.5 to 2 gig.

I think that\'s a winning idea. I tend to use rewrittable DVDs in case I need to add to my archived DVD-RW, BUT because of the cost of DVD-Rs - which have come down so much so that cutting to DVD-R is economical (I\'ve had a few problems trying to recover from DVD-RW after adding to them with newer/different burners.)

So we have melting ice and the sea rising because of that. Then the sea is getting warmer and growing larger because of that.

The atmosphere is warming is it growing larger??

Well, I\'m no expert but I\'d like to give my opinion. The sea rising in itself must be pushing the atmosphere up. Much of this must be compressing, even if it\'s on a minute scale, since the effects of gravity pull it back down, so atmospheric pressures must go up.

If you then warm up that air, it expands, creating a greater volume which tends to push up to make room for it. Gravity will pull it down again, more compression.

I expect eventually someone will coin the term \'hard air\'.

I have been running CCE in my laptop for about a month now 24/7 monitoring the temperature at 57C. It is sitting on a \'docking station\' which is essentially two fans drawing the air away from underneath.

I\'ve just shut it down first time and far from the laptop being on the point of melting the whole thing felt as cool as a cucumber. The external power supply was red hot though, almost too hot to handle.

As for the laptop fans (there are two or three inside it), yes they come on as soon as BOINC starts up, and stay on for quite a while, but they don\'t stay on continuously. But then I have the extra \'docking station\' fans (which are super quiet as opposed to the noisy laptop fans).

I\'m not sure if I follow you fully (on your whole note), but are you saying that because I have a P4 hyper threading I should be running \'this\' type of model, or if a 64-bit x86 CPU I should be running \'that\' type of model, and that some models have WU that are not appropriate for some processors?

Surely the faster processor you have the quicker it completes, and what it completes, no matter how quickly, has the same result? And is there a deadline for some models that if they are not completed by a certain time they are no good to the scientists and therefore I could be wasting my time even though I am leaving my PC on 24/7 thinking this is all worthwhile when \'they\' can see I will not complete in time for whatever reason and don\'t want to tell me in case I feel bad about a model I complete but is no good because it took too long?

Sorry about the length of that sentence, but sometimes it\'s best to let it flow.

The \'top\' lists are only updated daily

Is there any particular time of day, or is it random?

If the client reports lack of disk space, does it crash the model, or will it \'suspend\' and continue when more space is given?

I do think alot of people that run the BBC\'s CCE will continue to run DC projects now that they are being exposed to them

I hope so nasher, but it\'s not so good having to start again with zero credits. I can take it, but some have difficulty with having to start a model from scratch, to go back to 1920, even though retaining credits. You would probably have a far higher success rate if you allowed the credit to be transferred.

I\'m not sure why this should be a problem since it is not \'real\' money (is it?) and the credit \'has\' been earned. The real issue, I would have thought, is to take away any reasons that might stop any BBC CCEs from transferring over.

It\'s a stealth jet and I\'d like to thank you for not reading my sig ;-)

Ah, \'real\' sneaky. I thoughit was a bit quiet - I had my sound card turned right up. What sig was that? I didn\'t read it, honest, but thanks again for averting my eyes from claims of Australian superiority. I\'m used to it (don\'t mention cricket).

Oh that\'s just a clever way to sneak in a plug!

And I, for one, would like to appolgise to anyone who was offened by this morally dubious attempt and ask that no one read my signiture or click the hyperlink :-)

How can you \'sneak\' with that jet? Mach 4?

PS I refuse to read your signature and have no idea that you are Australia\'s leading team :)

How about make a new Team with a slighly different name that means the same thing? Like the \"English Speaking Alliance\", for instance ;o)

Have you cleared this with England yet? It would be odd to leave England out of this. But then we just got here :)
