1st to finish ?
(Message 30524)
Posted 17 Sep 2007 by old_user177151 Post: I left a model last night at 99% (my first CPDN model to hopefully finish) and it displayed a computation error this morning. I backed up to an (automated) backup taken just before the completion occurred, and it showed 100% complete. http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=6143188 Claimed credit 27,089.89, Granted credit 39,657.60 CPU time 12151864.770393 Over, Success, Done, 0 (0x0) Can someone tell me if I have 100% finished my first CPDN model, thank you. |

Posted 19 May 2007 by old_user177151 Post: Ian, I have abused nobody and nor have I been unpleasant. I have no knowledge of the first and really don\'t want to know, but on the second I would say that was your opinion. I hope CPDN start taking this team rivalry and credit scoring more seriously. Science is fair and obvious to you, but individuals scoring points from each other and banging on about \'friendly\' rivalry when it\'s so obvious that \'winning\' on credit is more important that the climate science to some, the oneupmanship is certainly not wanted in some cases. Winning on credit seems to have become irrelevant to some since they can\'t win on credit. It\'s quite clear that \'completed models\' is a top bragging item for many, carried on many signatures in BBC CCE, for many months now, and may continue in mainstream CPDN. So please publish a clear definition of what a completed model is for the purpose of this bragging, and threaten to roast people alive if they abuse this to keep us all safe from any potential misunderstandings. It\'s only for the best in the long term, and will give some of us a good nights sleep. I hope you agree. Now, can we get back to friendly games? |

Posted 18 May 2007 by old_user177151 Post: Not only do my boxes run continuously, they were built specifically to support this project. \'With malice aforethought\', eh? Yes, I hold up my hand to this. There was a time when I wasted my time and electricity on totally useless \'entertainments\'; computer games, downloading junk, etc. I still do all that now, I still pay the electricity bills, I still worry about the state of the planet and what we are all doing to it. Except now, by getting into BOINC projects including climate, I don\'t think my time is so wasted, I still worry about the planet, but I\'m contributing something positive, and the graphics I\'m coming out with are my best. Hey Rory, Slartibartfast didn\'t just draw the fiords, but he designed and built them all over the universe. But not enough arets to my liking ;) |

Posted 18 May 2007 by old_user177151 Post: It surely can\'t hurt to spell things out clearly, especially as there are probably loads of people crunching away in splendid isolation, and only occasionally dip into the forums etc, if ever. I think the whole issue has been well and truely discussed now in this thread, and I think on the whole we are all singing from the same hymn sheet. Thanks Pete, that\'s what I wanted to hear. Let\'s get this crystal clear right now and not leave any misunderstandings, now or in the future, in BBC and also here in CPDN where it would be dreadful to find people would \'tactically\' prematurely abort a model at 2050 just to show how great their team is, or whatever. |

My question was NOT about the science of it. It is about teams bragging that they have completed more models than other teams, when the definition of a complete model is whatever you want it to be. |

Posted 14 May 2007 by old_user177151 Post: I think Peter\'s right - I guess that when Carl said he was going to include 2050+ models in the front page figures, he was probably in a PR mood. I think you may be missing the point here by looking at this through your CPDN/PR angle. This is like a Blair/Bush spin. It doesn\'t matter what you think you said and how well you think you can challenge anyone on what you actually said. The fact is that you have given an impression that models at 2050+ are complete. I expect some are confused about this. The fact is that if someone decides to start up a \"models complete\" competition in BBC or CPDN, given the spin in place, anyone can stop crunching at 2050 and quicken their model completion by 30 years. No matter what you said or think you said. Since you and the moderators have said much on this subject, in so many \"official\" and individual statements of encouragement which clearly indicate that a model is complete at 2050+, including the PR on the CPDN front page, I think you should make a definition of what is a \"complete model\" clear to both BBC and CPDN and reconcile this with Carl\'s PR on the CPDN web front page. If Carl thinks a model is complete at 2050+, why do we need to carry on to 2080? It\'s a rhetorical question, but illustrates the lunacy of the situation and why Blair/Bush type spin should never be welcomed anywhere. |

Posted 13 May 2007 by old_user177151 Post: Back in January I said in the news thread that Carl had started counting 2050+ as \'finished\' for the purposes of quoting completed models on the cpdn website front page. Here\'s the news item: It\'s easy for you to say that mo.v. But you, the moderators, have been telling people that, despite their models crashing at 2050+ they can consider their models are complete, thank you very much, please start another one in CPDN. I think perhaps it is you that should say that, despite the fact that you have indicated a 2050+ model is complete, it is not, fact, complete for any criteria apart from what is being displayed in the CPDN front page. Which has got nothing to do with whether a model is complete or not (ie, 2080, zips uploaded, received, update acknowledged, credits allocated, goal by ref and linesman confirmed.) |

Posted 2 May 2007 by old_user177151 Post: Anton Hi Rory, The BUG toolbar requires Microsoft Windows 2000/XP and Microsoft Explorer 5.0+ (or Firefox 1.0.1+). You can use the toolbar with AOL installed. However the E-mail notifier does not seen to cater for AOL - it includes Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and POP3. You can, however, add further button for MSN Messenger, Outlook Express and others. I hope this helps. It installs very quickly if you want to try it, and has an unistaller if you decide it\'s not for you. It is free for everyone to use. It has no spyware or viruses, does not open pop-ups or hijack your searches, and no personal information is required.
