41) Message boards : Number crunching : Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site (Message 54811)

Post:
Sadly, I'm now away from the PC for a couple of days. I'll have to look at the zip size when I get back. Probably Friday, UK time.

Following on from Byron Leigh's post, I should say that I have run a number of MEX models to successful conclusion and upload. This one is the only one to have been stuck and I have kept it without aborting it in unreasonable hope only.

Here is a link to my debug log. My mex25 has been stuck at 37.64% uploaded for many weeks. Hope this run may give some clues alongside Vitalii's inputs.

I have applied Thyme Lawn's debug instruction and attempted an upload of a MEX25 zip that has been stuck with me for weeks. However, when I include the Event Log readout in my post to this thread, I get disconnected from the forum with an error message. Is this in itself a clue?
45) Message boards : Number crunching : WUs crash when closing BOINC (Message 54772)
Posted 11 Sep 2016 by Lockleys
Post:
I usually close down like this: 1) go to the tasks tab and close each task individually, starting with the ones that are still waiting to run; 2) go to the projects tab and close climateprediction; 3) click File>Exit BOINC. For me, this procedure seems almost faultless. When it's closed down, I usually make a backup of the BOINC data folder, even though it is becoming unfashionable to do so as the task durations reduce from what was over a year to complete a single task when I started crunching.
By the way, having "Leave Tasks in Memory = YES" is desirable but for completely different reasons, so I do that too.

EDIT, Dave Jackson beat me.

Just think of the boost to self-achievement that will kick in when The Fix is completed and that wonderful, positive step function kicks in to the statistics graph! Almost as good as ???

That's only for the people who have carried on crunching while the credits script isn't working properly, of course. Those who went away won't get the dopamine.

Like JIM, I haven't had the same problems with hadcm3n. I am closing my system down twice a day and taking backups. (Got builders in and I am anticipating them crashing the power supply!) Perhaps it's in the method? I suspend all Tasks, wait 10 seconds, suspend the cpdn Project, wait 10 seconds, resume all tasks (but keep the project suspended), then exit BOINC Manager. Then, on opening BOINC Manager again, it all just carries on smoothly. Or perhaps I've just hit lucky with my allocated hadcm3n (351 type).
50) Message boards : Number crunching : How to install Cpdn on Virtual Box ? (Message 52924)
Posted 21 Nov 2015 by Lockleys
Post:
Having seen the traffic about running CPDN in a Linux-Ububtu VM under Windows, I thought I would give it a go.

I have two questions to ask peers more experienced than me.
1) About the business of downloading 32 bit libraries when running on a 64 bit machine: can I assume that as I downloaded the 32 bit version of Ubuntu into my VM on my 64 bit Windows machine, I can ignore all those issues?
And 2) Under Windows, I am used to running CPDN under Advanced view to give a bit more insight and control over what's going on. In CPDN under the Ubuntu VM, I cannot find a way to switch from Simple view to Advanced view. Am I missing something somewhere?

Thanks.

I was plagued with random reboots on my Windows machines for some time, despite having Windows notify me whenever a reboot was required. I eventually identified Microsoft Security Essentials as the culprit. It didn't play by the notify-first rules. So I binned it. Now all is as it should be.

I have installed Windows 10 on a spare laptop to see how it went. I did have some difficulty with the initial installation (technically an update to Windows 8.1, as Tullio rightly says) but I found a workaround on Reddit which was succesful. I made sure that Windows Update would only take effect on a reboot. And also, pretty important, I made sure that my AntiVirus (in this case AVG Free) was also set at If_Computer_Restart_Required, Complete_At Next_Computer_Restart because that too can force a reboot when not expected and destroy CPDN models. Otherwise, it seems to be humming along satisfactorily and has just complete a PNW model.

Hey, my 64 bit Windows 8.1 computer runs them well. In fact, many complete on my computer that have failed elsewhere.

I just wish I did not have so many 1980 No Resubmission tasks sent to me!

Yeah, the shorts work fine for me on Win7 too. Likewise about having to check and abort the No Resubmission ones.

Alan, While most of my "No Resubmission" tasks are the 1980s batch, a few are not, so it is necessary to check them all.

I seem to be getting a real spate of hadcms models which are marked "No Resubmission". It has got to the point where when one of these starts coming to me from the server I look to see if it is so marked and abort it before it has fully arrived. Saves bandwidth and time.

I did run models like this for the Large Hadron Collider for a while but I found that running their models like this was a very heavy load on the PC. Much heavier than CPDN. It made the PC noticeably less responsive for other work. And since running these models is supposed to be a background activity which just users the spare cycles left over when I have done my own real work and should be an invisible background activity, I stopped running them. The other SixTrack LHC models which don't run inside a virtual machine run just fine and so I still run those. Just not the Vbox ones.

When the incidence of models marked as Linux Only or Windows Only or any other combo first appeared, I assumed it was simply tactical to get some targeted crunching under way. But now that almost all models are unavailable to one group of crunchers or another, it begins to seem more entrenched.
Is it now becoming policy only to release models for one subgroup of users or another?
I'm sure there is good reasoning behind it but I haven't seen it explained.
