1) Message boards : Number crunching : Planned outage for BOS and ESEA (Message 26359)
Posted 25 Jan 2007 by Profile old_user2275
Post:
I\'ve spent the last few days checking everything was working correctly, and it seems so. This is what happened Sunday:

Around 10 am local time, the database drive stalled once again, and I shut down the system, knowing I was going to correct things later.

Around 3 pm local time, I had moved everything to my work area, and wanted to start up to test everything would work fine when attempting to do the drive switch. But now the database drive box didn\'t start at all - no fan, no light, nothing. The other one seemed to start as usual. I thought it might be the power supply, so I switch to the other power supply - this time the box started, but I really didn\'t like the sound, so I turned it off quickly. The other box didn\'t like the power supply from the database drive box.

So, now I had two drives that I didn\'t know if I could even get working. Anyway, with two drives to switch and only two drives to replace them, I could wave goodbye to my RAID plans. The only hope I had was that it was the external boxes that were failing, not the hard drives themselves. And it turned out to be just that. So after I had copied the database drive successfully, I made the sites available again while copying the other drives - before moving things back where they belong.

Thanks Carl - the better solution in my view ;) I was actually going to mention that Spinup, forexample, shouldn\'t be filtered out, as it has always either been non-existent (in the beginning) or included in main, but you figured that out on your own :)

Sorr for all the commotion - and thank you for taking it in good spirit :)

To sort of add on to Les\' notes about migrating over, I had a brainstorm to move credits over. The next stats run should do this

Well thats messed up the BOINC combined stats big time ;)

No kidding :D Just noticed unrealistic jumps on many team mates, including myself - so I\'m working right now to filter BBC out of boinc combined, but then I noticed one who was only crunching for BBC... Boinc combined for him is zero at the moment. Don\'t know yet how many crunch for other projects but not cpdn main - they\'ll loose some credits until I know how to deal with this.

It\'s linked by cross-project-id so you have to make sure that they match on each project (go to \"Your Account\" here and on the BBC Expt site to make sure). If you used the same email addresses in both places you\'re probably fine.

What happens with those running BBC now but not the main project, and now or later decides to run the main project?

Will credits gained through BBC/CCE be moved to the main project

Yes
No
Maybe

It\'s still being discussed, but the consensus of opinion of the BBC crunchers is that they want their credits etc copied across.
If they are, then it will probably be based on cpids, and won\'t occur for some time yet.

Ok, thanks

PS
Bruno. Could you please post something in the shout box at BOINCstats to say that the cpdn beta site is NOT a new public project.
It\'s just a test site for stress testing new types of models before they\'re released on the well known public cpdn site.
There will be NO export xml files, and everyone running models there are expected to report ALL failures in the appropriate OS section, including all error messages, and hardware details.
And they should keep reading the site messages, as new versions/models are constantly being made available as bugs are reported.

Thanks

I will do that

I\'ve been late to discover this, sorry. I have a question that would be of interest for stats sites: Will credits gained through BBC/CCE be moved to the main project? I don\'t hope so, as it would be a ton of work on databases, but if that is the plan, it would be nice with a heads up ;)

For those who haven\'t read the BOS RSS feed, the BOS message boards or the ESEA message boards, here some info:

The hard drive containing the databases has been giving trouble these last few days. It is close to give up. I have two hard drives which was planned to be used as a replacement for the boot/system drive, but this is more important right now. So this weekend I will spend some time replacing the database drive. I will try to build a RAID with these two new hard drives, but this may take some time, as it is the first RAID I\'ve ever made. Keeping all data/programs completely intact during the process is an extra task, and may make it take a bit longer, as I don\'t have a third clean hard drive to save things on. But I\'ll do my best to do this as fast as possible. If all things go wrong I have back-ups.

So, just so you know, the BOS site and services and the ESEA site will be down for a while this weekend.

ESEA (Earth Space Exploration Agency) is looking for more Agency Scientists.

It is obvious that research is abundant, and our supercomputer can\'t keep up with the current amount of processors. So, the Agency is looking for more staff and the processors that come with this additional staff.

Currently the supercomputer is operating in the mid 40 GFlop range, and we need at least 100 for the time being.

There are an unlimited amount of positions vacant - just plug-in your processors.

> the problem seems to be that I am relying on the teamid in the result table,
> but somewhere along the line BOINC hasn't been putting teams in there. since
> that isn't reliable, I'm going to just go back to the "old system" where your
> team in the user table determines how many credits the team gets (which means
> that a person "takes" their credits with them if they join another team).
> also don't forget that credit calcs are run twice a day so it may be up to 12
> hours until you switch/join a team that you'll see the stats change.

So in other words it'll go back to being the sum of current members' credits. Well, it's better than what I'm experiencing at the moment which is no new credit for the team, but a decaying RAC (well, the RAC thing is to be expected as it was way too high for normal curcomstances ;))

Anyway, happy to know something is being done, and cudos for great and hard work

> I think the problem now is that BOINC doesn't just sum up the user credits to

The non-boinc way was due to a fix of another problem (http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=2619), so I guess the non-boinc way (sum of members credits) will return if not currently used ;)

As far as I can tell, noone has left my team, resulting in natural decrease (due to the way cpdn works atm). Still, a big chunk of credits was cut from my team.

So far all credit gained by an individual has been added to any team they join. So if I add up all credit from all members, it should be the credit the team has - which right now would be more than double of what the team has today (yesterday it would have been just a little less, when using todays numbers of the members ;))

Well, anyway, has anyone else experinced a strange decrease in team credits?

Post:
When someone joins a team all credit this person has accumulated is added to the team. If the person in the process leaves another team, all his credit will be subtracted from the team. Of course this is "bad" for the team that the person is leaving, but it can also be "bad" for the team the person joins, in more than one way. Naturally any team would welcome more credit, but then again, it feels a bit like stealing - AND more importantly, it can throw whatever stats they run out of whack for a while.

I run a team myself, and naturally I'd like more to join - but I don't want to steal credit from other teams - and whenever someone who has been crunching for a while joins my team, all their credit is added to my team, which throws my MFlop stats out of whack for a while - annoying actually.

So, I have a request: To implement the same policy projects like seti@home has, which is credit earned while being member of team A stays with team A when the member changes to team B - and credit earned while not being a member of a team is not added to team A when the member joins team A.

The WU in question is 2m8o_300143371_0 - NOT in my results list - 0 (zero) work done on it, and now aborted.

Just a small update before the 1.0 release. Added the possibility to add a timestamp to the image. The timestamp displays the time and date of the last BOS update.

I know the development of BOS has been a bit slow lately, but I'm working on other projects also and BOS seems to run pretty stable. Besides, I've been thinking about the scheme for mirroring which looks to become pretty ambitious :)

Well, I just thought it might be nice to have this timestamp, although it looks pretty odd in this version (my opinion). Ok, I still call it alpha ;)

Honza: As the Ariel font wasn't as wide as the standard font, and I originally wanted to use te real names as far as possible I don't think I'll change it back now :) BUT a future version will feature an array of choices as to how the project names should be displayed. Then you can choose between 'climateprediction.net', 'CPDN', 'climate' etc. :)

The uncorrect characters are due to settings on the web server - I'll need one of the upgrades saturday and a reboot to fix that - that's why I didn't try to fix it right now ;) As I'm tying to keep downtime as low as possible I 'bundle' tasks that need downtime ;)

Made some multi language changes:

- Changed the font from build in font to true type Arial. This eliminates alot of character problems
- The image now has dynamic width. It changes if states in a variety of languages are longer then the standard width.
- Added four languages. I will wait adding chinese and russian untill I have conquered a charset problem. I will look into this saturday when the server is offline anyway

Naturally the URL generator is changed accordingly.

Added the ability to have uptime percentages appended directly to the online

Added simulated images to the URL generator, so now you can see the colors
of all states, and don't have to wait until a projects goes down or gets unreachable.
There's even a simulated image for the odd occurance that none of the projects
are online ;)

Color names for standard colors have been added to the URL generator. One of
them is not found on O'Reilly's list though. The bosgolden color is one I created
for this image. The other standard text colors weren't on O'Reilly's list either,
so I changed them accordingly for best match.

Added the ability to change the tagline color. This way you can choose a color
for it that doesn't clash with the background color.

Change the URLs generated by the URL generator and added them to the image
script. The URLs will now get shorter. The old URLs you may already use will
still work.

Fixed a stupid bug that made the online status for climateprediction disappear
when not online, and especially if it's down. I didn't know the bug was there

I've begun the multi language capabilities, but it's on an experimental stage still. The languages that have been gracefully contributed has been added, but some characters are not shown proberly as well as long string currently do not make the image wider (that'll come).

But, something that really works is uptime percentages. Yup, I've added the ability to display uptime percentage in addition to scheduler online status, and if you want, you can choose ONLY to display the uptime percentages.

In addition I've added some pages to the URL generator site - so take a look, and try it out ;)

I did find the solution to special characters. The font used with imagestring doesn't include them - but if I use the ttf verdana I should be in the clear ;) It would need some re-coding, but I'll need to do that anyway to take varied string widths into account which I wanted to do anyway ;)

In the meantime, while lots of you hopefully help out with the translation, I'll add the hex color change ability - would propably be available in an hour or so.

I was actually thinking of releasing the source. My concern though is the polling for online status and keep congestion at the projects down. I might make it so web site poll my database in stead of the projects - that would keep the congestion at the projects to a minimum - and spread the traffic. But that's a bit further down as I still have some ideas for this I want to look into first and are still in a learning fase.

As to the internationalization, I was thinking about first of all to add a page at the URL generator that offers users to contribute with translations for the three states. The string mentioned by microtoxic is the way I would implement it. The dataset-thing is a bit above my skill at the moment, but I'm working hard to learn ;)

> Another "weird idea" maybe for your todo-list : your tool could become
> "international" if it was possible to specify the local word for "online",
> "down" and "unreachable" in the URL ...
>
> Real weird indeed... :-)

Not so wierd ;) But I know there might be some trouble with that - not so much specifying it in the url, but with special letters. In Danish there's the problem with the translation from Unreachable -> Utilgængelig - the letter "æ" becomes some other char. But I would love for it to be "multilinguable" :)

I'll think of something :)

The URL generator is ready. Next two things on the todo-list is direct hex color choices and transparency color.

But for now take a look at the URL generator - I've tested it during development, but there might be a slip up somewhere.

> $rgb = array('r' => hexdec(substr($color,0,2)),

> 'b' => hexdec(substr($color,4,2)));
> return $rgb;
> }

Hey, thanks - that get's me closer alot sooner :)

Version 0.6

Textcolor is now changable.

Parameters:

projectcolor: changes the color of the projects names
onlinecolor: changes the color of the "Online" text
downcolor: changes the color of the "Down" text
unreachcolor: changes the color of the "Unreachable" text

Still the colors are the names from O'Reilly's list.

Example:

<img src="http://83.72.130.163/esea/boincschedulers.php?projectcolor=darkslateblue&backcolor=cornsilk&onlinecolor=skyblue
&unreachcolor=indigo&downcolor=gray">
looks like

And btw, if you misspell a color name, the script will revert to the standard
color.

Also fixed the height when using the yes value on project parameters.

Next I'll create an URL creator as the URLs can now potentially get tricky
- after that I'll look into direct RGB color changes (dec and hex)

> Colors names working fine. I think many admins would invite option to choose
> colors in hex format so they correspondent with other visual elements of
> forum; not that the name list is short :-)

Well, I chose this way first as it was the easier one to implement quickly ;) I'm still new to PHP, so there are things I need to learn. I was actually thinking of making it possible to choose rgb colors in dec first, but I want to see if there's a smart way to do that. When I got that, I'll see if I can make some dec2hex conversion as well (there are propably code out there I can grab ;))

But right now I'll see to it that the text colors can be changed as weel - that has higher priority for the moment - as well as a URL generator (another idea I grabbed from Petrus) ;)

> Would it be possible to have a "transparency" color ?

Once I figure out how it will surely be implemented ;)

Version 0.5

You now have two choices of how to choose which projects to display:

1) if you use the no setting on the parameters, you choose not to display those
projects, but any new projects added to the script will automatically be displayed
as well as the current ones you left displayable
2) if you use a yes setting on the parameters, you isplay only those projects
selected - any new projects added to the script will remain hidden

Example:

<img src="http://www.esea.dk/esea/boincschedulers.php"> will
still display all projects supported - like this:

<img src="http://www.esea.dk/esea/boincschedulers.php?pred=no&ein=no">
will de-select predictor and einstein but display all other supported projects,
including future projects

<img src="http://www.esea.dk/esea/boincschedulers.php?pred=yes&ein=yes">
will display only predictor and einstein, and even if new projects are added
they will not show up

As you can see, there's a small issue with the size, but I'll work on that.

Another new feature is the ability to change the background color. Add the
parameter backcolor and choose a color name from O'Reilly's
list (I'm adding all colors alphabetically, last one this minute is cyan,
but I'll continue to add colors 'till they're all there right after posting
this).

Example:

<img src="http://www.esea.dk/esea/boincschedulers.php?pred=yes&ein=yes&backcolor=aquamarine">

<img src="http://www.esea.dk/esea/boincschedulers.php?backcolor=cornsilk">

Please let me know if a color doesn't work - I'll propably make some typo's
here and there.

Next the textcolors will be changable - same color names ;)

I thought there would be some website owners out there who wanted to be able to display online status of the boinc projects schedulers.

So I created this little script that does exactly that. It looks like this:

Now, Boinc Online Schedulers (BOS) version 0.3 is pretty much still an alpha version, but it looks to work pretty good.

All that's needed is to make an image tag on the page you want to display it at, like this: <img src="http://83.72.130.163/esea/boincschedulers.php">

It's updated every 5 minutes. Future plans for it includes:

- choice of projects to display
- choice of colors to use

59) Message boards : Number crunching : CPDN grants more credit than Predictor (Message 10858)
Posted 14 Mar 2005 by Profile old_user2275
Post:
> > One of the main differences from cpdn to the other projects is that cpdn
> is currently the only one that doesn't send the same wu to more participants
> and compare their results. This means if your host claims an amount of credit
> for cpdn work, that amount is what is granted - which is not the case per
> definition at the other projects.
>
> That's far from accurate. CPDN does resent some WUs of re-check consistency
> among different platforms.
> What it doesn't, is the concept of claimed/granted credit. Credit is granted
> upon actual work being done, not some synthetic benchmarks and others
> not-much-sayings numbers.
> You finish whole model, you get 6805.26 credit. As simply as that; no
> horse-trading.

I wasn't too clear here ;)

What cpdn doesn't do, like the others, is to send out the same wu to several participants, wait for the participants to return the results, compare them, and then grant credit by evaluating claimed credit - that is granting the lowest value, the middel value or whatever scheme is chosen.

Any comparison that may be done between wu's does not in any way affect the credit system - and I view it from the credit systems point of view in this thread ;)

>
> I've found that CPDN grants ~50% more credit per second of CPU time than
> Predictor does, on the same computer. Is there any way this bias can be
> fixed?
>
> Across projects, my impression is that CPDN grants more credit than LHC, SETI,
> or Einstein as well.

Have you checked out how much credit your hosts claim at the other projects? It may be higher than what is granted. One of the main differences from cpdn to the other projects is that cpdn is currently the only one that doesn't send the same wu to more participants and compare their results. This means if your host claims an amount of credit for cpdn work, that amount is what is granted - which is not the case per definition at the other projects. As far as I can tell from Andrews link, it would seems that on cpdn there is not even such a thing as claimed credit.

Well, in either case, cpdn is not very comparable with the others as it is very different in how it works.

> I will check it out when I get home from work
> I suspect it does as the projects tab shows two cpdn projects running one
> with 114562.5 of credits which is seti
> the other with 7088.81 which is correct for cpdn

If that is the case you should be able to correct it manully. First take a note of the credit amount listed on the projects tab for the seti project. You would then need to close the BOINC client while opening client_state.xml in a text editor (not Word or something like that, use notepad or similar). Make a back-up of the file just in case.

Search for the occurance of the credit amount. If you find it next to a string that says user_total_credit>, you have found the seti project settings.

A little above the total credit amount you will find a string that say master_url>

If it is followed by http://climateprediction.net/ it should be changed to http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

The line just below is project_name> - if it is followed by climateprediction.net it should be changed to SETI@home

A bit further down, below the user credits, you will find a string that says scheduler_url>

If it is followed by http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi then it should be changed to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi

This should help - if it doesn't, close the BOINC client emediatly and restored the backed up client_state.xml file.
