1) Message boards : Number crunching : Postponed (Message 62569)

Thanks for your help Dave.
The Task Manager showed only one BOINC running, so that was not the problem.

However, the REBOOT cleared my computer's confusion (and mine!).
Tasks now running again.

For some reason I now have this message for several tasks.

"09/06/2020 09:51:53 | climateprediction.net | Task wah2_anz50_31cz_209412_32_872_012026751_0 postponed for 600 seconds: Waiting to acquire slot directory lock. Another instance may be running."

Can someone tell me how to get the tasks running again please?

Thanks.

I used Oracle VM Virtualbox to install a 32bit version of Linux Mint to avoid potential issues with 32bit libraries. I chose Mint because the Cinnamon version has a Windows -like interface. It runs with no problems and I have completed several tasks successfully.
To preserve your current task, you also need to remember to shut down BOINC before closing VirtualBox if you are shutting down or restarting Windows for any reason. If Windows decides to play up and restart without warning, then you might lose the current task and have to start another.

Thank you Dave and Les. I appreciate your (ever) helpful replies.
I guess I need to persist with the VMPlayer/Mint computations, now that I have more cores available.
However, CPDN does seem to have a lot less tasks and active users these days.
The WCG Africa Rainfall Project seems mighty slow in getting going too.
Perhaps we need a UK Rainfall project with so many suffering flooding just now!

Any indications (perhaps test batches?) of new Windows work in the foreseeable future?
My new Ryzen is getting hungry.
Currently it is chewing on two Linux tasks via VMPlayer and LinuxMint, but they seem to be slow going.

You need to look in the Number Crunching thread.
There are several answers there!

"even though it's set to additional 0.01 days of work (which should equate to every 14 minutes and appears to be the smallest increment BOINC accepts in that field)."

I thought that "set to additional days work" (actually "Store additional Days work" in my BOINC manager version), enabled you to download and store additional work units for your computer to crunch on future days.

Surely it has nothing to do with how frequently the requests for work are made - which is controlled by CPDN, not the BOINC Manager, to no more frequently that one hour as Les pointed out.

Thanks. I had seen the "suspend Guest" in the VM control panel, so thanks for explaining its use.

Since my computer runs 24/7 (until Windows causes problems!!), I should get a long run without needing to suspend.
As I'm on Win 10 Pro, I can delay any update reboots, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for some successful crunching.

In the mean time my other cores are crunching Cancer Markers on WCG in Windows.

In an attempt to get new work, I have done the following:
Installed VMWare Workstation Player 15 on my Windows 10 computer.
Installed LinuxMint Tina 19.2 32-bit version in that Virtual Machine (I hope that avoids the 32bit libraries problem).
Installed BOINC in Mint
Linked it to my account

It downloaded 1 task (Virtual Machine is only using 1 core) and according to BOINC Manager, it appears to be crunching OK.

Looking in my CPDN account, a virtual machine has been added to my list of computers,

Since I am a complete Linux Newbie, I ask if I have I missed anything, or should it crunch OK and report OK?

With nothing else available, my computer is working on two 762s, one 763 and two 764s. These are long-running time SAM25s. One of them is now halfway through the estimated run time of 72 days, the others are around a quarter of the way.

Are these still of scientific value, or am I wasting electricity to run them?
They were giving me credits before the recent hiatus.

While it is good to see the credit script running, I am not confident that my RAC is correct. It is down to about a third of the RAC I had before the outage, even though I am doing the same amount of computing.

I think that the Trickles that my Event Log shows are being recorded and my completed Tasks have credit shown, so why the decrease in my RAC? Are the recent tasks giving less credit these days?

[/quote]I am doing a test now to compare virtual cores vs. real cores on two Intel Haswell machines running Win7 64-bit.
On an i7-4771, I am running WAH2 on four real cores.

Check Task Manager, Performance. I think you will find that Windows automatically treats ALL cores as Real and that the computing is equally distributed to 8 cores. That is what I read in some technical discussion board.

That is what it does for my i7-4790. During working hours I tell BOINC to use 50% of the CPUs, but I see all 8 running at just over 50%. At night I specify 100% of CPUs and see all 8 running at 100%.

So Should I continue crunching my 742s and those in my queue?

Just to add some perspective. My Win 10 i-7 Intel computer is running 4 from the 742 batch. To check on the reported problems, having let them run for an hour, I deliberately suspended them and then resumed them. They did not fail.
One has reached 1 day and 3 hours, the other 3 are at 9 hours, all with no problems.

As I suspected, just a rant by someone who has no ability to debate scientific research. Notice that he never answered my question about his qualifications.

It kind of reminds me of declarations made by a certain president whose name rhymes with a British/English word - chump.

A thorough post?

I agree with Jim, you seem to be expressing an opinion, but are not offering evidence.

Frankly, I'm still not exactly sure what your opinion is, since the whole rant was so long and confusing. If you were writing about psychology, then it would look like psychobabble to me.

Perhaps you could try stating your case clearly in (say) two sentences, then I might understand what you are trying to say.

It would also help me if you could state your qualifications and background, so that I know where your opinion is coming from.
