He has posted identical comments on the Rosetta Boards.

I believe that Windows 2003 server is locked down by default. You will have to add the CPDN URL to your trusted sites on the server.

Les ..

No I can\'t (but thanks for trying). I do not remember my password and the password retrieval function seems unable to mail me a new one.

I have another eMail account that I can use to re register under another handle if I get too itchy ....

It would be nice to see that problem resolved as, I believe, there are a few of us locked out of the message board now. (Maybe not a bad thing !)

I typically use the lost password function as an alternative to remembering all the passwords that I have used at one time or another on various sites.

Unfortunately the lost password function does not seem to work on the PHP board.

I also have a spam filter but it filters everything to a folder. I haven\'t seen anything there that might resemble an eMail from the CPDN PHP board.

Thanks for checking Les.

You might also want to give Memtest 86+ a whirl to to see if the memory is entirely reliable.

I have had a number of machines fail in a number of creative ways but the root cause for most of them ended up being bad memory.

7) Questions and Answers : Windows : Run BOINC as a service (Message 18883)

Post:
Running Boinc as a service is handy as it starts up when the machine is booted and runs silently whether you log in to your machine or not.

When you install Boinc as a service you have to provide the ID and password of the account on your local machine that you want Boinc to be associated with. On boot up Boinc will run as a background task using that accounts credentials. If you subsequently log on to the account normally the Boinc Manager icon is where it usually is and can be used to manage the Boinc service.

I use it for a number of machines that I run without keybaords and monitors - just boot the machine and forget about it. I also use it on a couple of \"family\" machines running Windows XP home. These machines have 3 or 4 ID\'s each. I have Boinc installed as a service on my own account on each machine and it runs silently regardless of which account(s) are actually being used. Boinc manager is only available on the account that I use.

I just took a look at one of my Boinc service installations. There is no sign of a boinc_cli.exe but there is a Boinc.exe and a Boincmgr.exe ... both of which showed up in the task manager when I logged on.

Louchio -

The program is failing on your PC after the first trickle. Often this is an indication of a problem on the PC itself.

There are some tests that you can do that might help in determining the problem:

>> How will you do this? I have no idea where to go or what to do.

mo.v ... in Internet Explorer the Browser cache can be cleared by navigating to Tools \\ Internet Options \\ Delete Files \\ Delete all Offline Content . This will delete the temporary files that are created when you browse sites on the Internet. If you haven\'t done this in awhile the process can take a few minutes to execute. It\'s good practice to clear the cache periodically. Some financial institutions recommend that you clear the cache after every online banking session. Clearing the cache can sometimes resolve browsing problems with a site, particularly if the site has been relocated or is undergoing active maintenance.

If your are using Windows (Windows XP in my case) then your cookies will be located on your hard drive in the folder c:\\ Documents and Settings \\ %username% \\ Cookies \\ .. where %username% represents the ID that you are using on that specific machine. If you log in to your machine with the user name of \"ferd\" then the it will be .... \\ferd\\Cookies ..

The particular cookie used by the CPDN PHP bulletin board is %username%@www.climateprediction[2].txt . This cookie appears to contain encrypted copies of the CPDN PHP ID and password. So .. when you browse to the CPDN PHP bulletin board your cookie is retrieved and your ID and password contained in the cookie are presented for authentication.

So .. clearing the cache might help if there have been changes to the site and deleting the cookie might help if your ID and password have become corrupted somehow.

Unfortunately none of these strategies worked for me as I did not retain my password and the problem is that the eMail process for password retrieval appears to be broken (for me).

OK, thanks Geophi.

I have the same problem as mo.v reports in that thread. My automatic logon is no longer working. Unfortunately my habit is to not remember online passwords and I just use the \"forgot password\" feature when a new login is required.

I do not believe it is a spam filter thing as my ISP flags spam but continues to forward it. I forward spam to a personal folder using an Outlook rule. Since there is nothing in the spam folder from CPDN I suspect that I am not even receiving the eMail.

I will take a look at the browser cookies and reset the cache .. but if, as you say, my ISP is black holing the domain name there is not much that I can do but be an anonymous observer on the PHP BBS.

thanks for your reply.

If you have a model currently running then stop the model and back up the Boinc directory before you upgrade.

If you are truly paranoid then uninstall your current version of Boinc before you upgrade. The uninstall process does not remove your current model. The upgrade, once installed, will take over the model correctly.

(of course this is all assuming that you are running a Windows client.....)

Well ... you could always <b> fall back </b> to NT4.0 . :> CPDN will run on it just fine (so far ...)

If you have machines with models that are nearing completion and you want to wait a bit to see what the next version will bring then click the \"No new work\" button in the \"Projects\" tab in your Boinc Manager. Once your model is done no additional models will be downloaded until you press the \"Allow new work\" button. If you have other BOINC projects running on that machine, they will take up the processing slack.

I have a number of machines with CPDN paused at the moment, and running SETI, while I try to decide whether or not I really want to run a 2000 hour CPDN model. A new compile that runs faster and is more stable will certainly help.
