3.69 s/TS seems a bit slow for an XP 3000. I am getting 2.72 s/TS on a Barton 2500. I am using PC3200 memory but the processor is running at stock speeds.

I have an Athlon 64 3000 running at 2.18 s/TS using Corsair value ram and another running at 2.42 s/TS using Samsung ram.

I am getting 3.69 s/TS on a Sempron 2600. I think that your machine should be doing better than my Sempron though.

All machines are running WinXP. I suspect that the mileage will vary on other operating systems though
24) Questions and Answers : Windows : Benchmak stopped model being crunched (Message 14953)

Ok .. it just ocurred on one of my machines:

- CPU benchmark starts to run and CPDN is paused.
- an error occurs
- the message "Aborting CPU benchmarks, one or more active tasks are still running." is displayed
- both of the hadsm processes appear to be killed but BOINC does not seem to be aware of it. I am running Seti (10%) and CPDN (90%) and have set both to remain in memory when suspended.
- on the "work" tab BOINC still shows CPDN and SETI.
- BOINC still allocates time slices to CPDN even though the hadsm processes are not running. BOINC shows CPDN as running even though the hadsm processes are not actually there.
- When BOINC allocates time slices to SETI and SETI runs as the SETI process is still in memory.

It is occurring on a number of my machines. Some of these are "headless" (no monitor / keyboard or mouse) and I don't notice it until I check the CPDN stats and see that a machine has not reported in for some time).

I am running CDPN and Seti under Boinc 4.45. I have both apps configured to remain in memory when they are suspended. When the event occurrs - both applications still show in the Boinc manager but CPDN does not appear to be running. Not sure if the Seti app still runs but I will watch for it.

Hmm .. that's a weird one.

I have had similar experiences in the past when I cut and pasted the URL and account ID into the registration screen.

May be an obvious thing .. but try detaching from the project and then reattaching ... but check for leading or trailing blanks or other characters when you reenter the url and registration number.

Another thought is that 128M of RAM might be a bit light ... but I believe 64MB is still the official minimum requirement.

I believe the SQL sever was down over the weekend. Carl posted a note on the PHP bulletin board.

Carl appears to be back and is fixing a lot of stuff. The recent outages have more to do with the consequences of the repair work than lack of maintenance.

It's a good thing..... the kind of annoyance that I can live with.

abbysoft .. tak a look at your preferences. They can be found on this site under "your account" in the "preferences", "general" section.

Take a look at the settings under "Limits on disk space and memory used by BOINC" and adjust them to suit.

Active hosts are up by 12,000 since January 1. Active users is up by 33,000.
30) Questions and Answers : Windows : screensaver password pprotection (Message 10412)
Posted 5 Mar 2005 by old_user2500
Post:
Run BOINC but do not run it as a screen saver. Run your preferred screen saver with the password lock feature enabled. If you are running a Windows machine then use the "blank" screen saver and enable password protection. The "blank" screen saver does not consume much CPU which leaves more for BOINC.

Set your BOINC preferences to run when idle. It will run behind the screen saver.

Try to be less critical until it has been clearly demonstrated that there is a problem that cannot be resolved.

With a dual P3 1Ghz you should be running two models and averaging around 9 or 10 s/TS per model. This is what I was getting on a pair of D6VAA's . Unfortunately there seems to be a penalty of about 25% per processor when running dual PIII's .

Jim,

a strategy that has worked well for me is to adjust your preferences on your account here at CPDN so that your PC does not work on CPDN while you are using it.

Under "View or Edit General Preferences" set the following:

- Do work while Computer is in use = NO
- Leave applications in memory while preempted = YES

The effect is to pause CDPN while you use your machine but leave it in memory so that any work that has been completed in the last half hour or so is not lost. When you do not use your machine CPDN will resume after 3 minutes.

Most of the crashes on my machines have been associated with heavy video / CPU usage by another program, usually a video game. I have had one crash when Norton AV was running.I have had no crashes under moderate usage situations such as browsing, emailing, or non video intensive games. Civ III is fine. battlefield 1942, Warcraft III, or Zoo Tycoon are not.

I have changed my Boinc preferences to Suspend CPDN when the user is active. I am still keeping BOINC in memory.

I have no idea whether or nor this will result in an improvement in my success ratio but am going to give it a fair run.

C ... assuming that you are running CPDN under BOINC .. You can force an update by rightclicking the "climateprediction.net" entry on the Projects tab and selecting "update".

This is only a suggestion but take a look at the Processes running in task manager. If you see a process running that starts with the name "hadsm3..." then Boinc has not been shut down cleanly. Just rebooting your machine should resolve the problem.

Thanks TL. One of my machines is 3 months in to a 6 month run but I have had to fall back to a backup a number of times. I did not want to finally get to the magic day onlt to discover that "done" means "done".

I have been backing up the Boinc subdirectories on my machines, more or less conscientiously, and then restarting from the backup when a fatal error occurs. It's a slow dance but I am making progress.

I notice that a fatal error is usually flagged on my Boinc CPDN stats as "Server State Over" and "Client error" .

Does this mean that the work unit will be rejected at the server when it is eventually completed ?

Depending on my mood I would describe the model as "fragile" or perhaps "unforgiving" but it is nonetheless the challenge that keeps me going.

I have had it fail during a virus scan, during a game, when someone looged on to another account on the XP at home machine, or just because it seemed to feel like it that day.

Run it on your most reliable machines. Back up the BOINC directory periodically. Don't mess with the XML files. Hoist a few when it successfully uploads. Repeat as necessary.
