Unfortunately the Climate Prediction client will not run on the WIn98/Win ME/ platforms.

Win 2000 and up is required.

One of my uploads just failed as well. Log message is attached. I thought that I had made the suggested changes but there is always room for mea culpa.

45) Questions and Answers : Windows : GUI Diagnostic Error (Message 4952)

Post:
I have seen similar errors on Win XP Home when two users are logged on. Boinc runs in one of the sessions and "hangs" in the other.

I have also seen errors when running Boinc and a scheduled Norton Antivirus scan runs.

I have assumed it to be a file locking issue but haven't really nailed it down.

I believe there was some discussion in other threads that the resource commitment is averaged over a period of time ( not sure how long ). Since Seti has been down for awhile the application may be "owed" some time now that it is back up.

I would give it a day or two to balance out.

Post:
Bradley,

There is a checkpointing mechanism but it doesn't seem to be 100% effective unless the shutdown was an orderly one. I have lost workunits as a result of forced resets and killing user sessions under Windows XP home.

IMHO the best system to run CPDN on is either one that you are the sole user of or one that runs unattended most of the time.

Sigh .. nice idea but no cigar. Boinc seems to keep track of what units it is working on. A restore has no effect if a new model has been downloaded already.

My workunit appears to have been toasted when I killed another users logon session under Win XP home. BOINC on my session appeared to be frozen. I suspect that it was running in the other users session. After killing that session and restarting BOINC the CPDN app reported a corrupt or missing file and downnloaded a new model.

I probably phrased the question poorly .. what I should have been asking for is a "restore point" . A point where the entire workunit can be restarted at my option.

I see a suggestion in another thread that the workunit can be backed up manually and then copied back if needed. I will give that a try.

Thanks for your response John. It's an interesting project .. it is just going to take a litle time to get work through the inevitable gotchas.

Post:
I have a lost a number of workunits due to system crashes and lockups. In each case CPDN downloads a completely new workunit and I have to restart from zero.

It would be nice to have the option to checkpoint the CPDN system state from time to time and then restore and resume processing from a saved state if need be.

There seems to be a number of folk encountering Visual Fortran runtime erorrs. The guy with the HP machine who removed a bunch of the bundled software from his machine has probably stumbled on the problem - DLL conflicts between the CPDN app and a previously installed Visual Fortran application on the users machine.

Ok.

what do you mean by "crashes" ? Do you mean that it does not appear to run (i.e. the "CPU Time" entry under the "Work tab" does not increase) or do you mean that you get actual error messages and/or your machine locks up hard?

Can you cut and paste the log from your "Messages" tab here so that others can take a look ?

Omega ... what operating system are you running ? If it is Windows 98 or NT 4.0 BOINC will not run.

Richard, I have been puzzled by this as well and have been watching the logs on a couple of my machines. My theory is that the minimum time slice is "1 hour" . I have my preferences set to 100 Units CPDN and 50 units SETI. This works out to 2/3 processing time for CPDN and 1/3 processing time for Seti.

What I am seeing in the logs and in task manager CPU time summary is two 1 hour time slices assigned to CPDN for every one 1 hour time slice assigned to Seti.

My guess is that if you set your preference to CPDN 1 and SETI 100 then for every 101 hours of operation CPDN will get a single 1 hour timeslice and SETI will get 100.

Andrew ... the workunits are huge and will take a very long time to complete. I have one that is estimating that it will take 2,700 hours. That's 100+ days of 24x7 processing on a 1Ghz PIII. Note the "expiry date" on your work unit. It is likely set at 1 year from now.

The CPDN folk are using the concept of a "trickle" to give you credit for the work done. If your machine is BOINc'ing during the day it should report back every day or two and credit you with progress made.

It's a different concept then Seti .. where one could whip through a WU every few hours on a fast enough machine.

I personally would like to see some way to migrate workunits to replacement machines as I have a few boxes that are not likely going to last the year.

Yes .. I just checked a bunch of logs and 1 hour it is (carefully inspects the bottom of the empty wine bottle for traces of ritalin ....)

.... clipped from another thread .. in which Carl says ....

" Just be careful not to set CPDN share too low if you also have "Leave suspended tasks in memory" to "False" (the default setting), as if CPDN gets too short a time to run it will never make it to the next checkpoint (144 timesteps, which is usually 10-15 minutes "

ahhhhhhhh .... (the lightbulb goes on)
