21) Questions and Answers : Wish list : AMD64 (Message 23854)

So far, two projects have added support for x86-64: SETI sends the x86 application and SIMAP, a true x86-64 application. Would you consider supporting the platform x86_64-pc-linux-gnu or x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu similarly?

20% or 2.3 * as long? (i.e, 230%!)

You\'re right. I was comparing disparate machines.

I\'m running the BBC CPDN on this machine and it completed a sulfur-cycle WU in about 45 days. The BBC CPDN WUs are estimated to take 135 days!

1. Anyone know about the expected run time of the BBC app? Is it likely to be about as long as a slab, about as long as a sulfur, or somewhere between?

It takes about 20% longer than sulfur-cycle.
2. Does the BBC app show up as a separate project in stats (eg BOINC stats) or as part of the CPDN stats?

It shows up as a separate project.

The answers were quite enlightening. But why was HadCM3 chose for this gig with BBC? I suspect that it was just the opportunity to attract lots of participants for a more computationally-intensive model...

Thank you.

I noticed that the BBC experiment runs the HadCM3 experiment. IIRC, that was run as a spin-up test. What\'s the difference from HadSM3? Why isn\'t HadCM3 run here too? Could you share why HadCM3 was chosen for this gig with BBC?

Thanks.

if/when we do a 64-bit version it won\'t be for speed, it will be because the models \"natively\" run in 64-bit. it\'s probably about a year away (and will depend on funding!)

I see. But how about supporting the AMD64 platform by sending the i686 application to AMD64 clients?

Thanks.

28) Message boards : Number crunching : Disk Space Bloat (Message 20409)
Posted 17 Feb 2006 by ebahapo
Post:
I have 4 and 8-way systems whose disks get hogged by CPDN to the mark of 8GB! Having set a limit of only 2GB, these systems won\'t load WUs from any other project due to lack of disk space.

Moreover, even setting their queues to deplete, the directories are not cleared automatically and CPDN files still lurk around taking up disk space, forcing me to delete them manually. Quite cumbersome.

Can the developers please tackle this issue?

Thanks.

I wonder why CPDN can't set up a server to redirect the uploads to another mirror...
