1) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC 5.8.8: file ... not found (Message 26598)
Posted 5 Feb 2007 by old_user272
Post:
This was reported on another Board. Don\'t recall where though it might have been Beta. One hopes it\'s being addressed.

So far, it seems no more than an infrequent irritation.

That might have been me in one of the PHP forums. On 3 of my machines 5.8.8 was trying to download 3 files for an earlier client version that are no longer available.

I had a quick look and it appeared that because the file was mentioned in client_state.xml then the new client tried to download it. In the end I did the same as the OP, aborted the transfer in the transfer window, and the problem seems to have gone away.

I\'m also going to wait until the the current models finish and then do a complete reinstall of BOINC. That will replace the folders and xml files to clear out the \"rubbish\" that is left from warious upgrades over the last 3 or so years.

So spinups & classic CPDN will be counted back in here, and also the current & future beta tests (whenever I figure out an appropriate beta credit scheme)

Thanks Carl, it does seem the logical thing to do for results generated on this project which are not registered anywhere else.

[quote]I have no problems including the Spinup and Classic credits.

I have a problem with moving credit from one BOINC project to another and from most BOINC users and my perspective CPDN, SAP and BBC are separate projects.[quote]
I have to say I agree with this. SAP and BBC are separate projects started for different reasons to the main CPDN project.

The main CPDN project is just that, a single project that consists of a number of different experiments, HadSM3, Suplhur, Spinup and Coupled (I think that\'s all?) with each one being dependant on it\'s predecessor. It would seem to me that credit obtained during any one of these experiments should be counted as credit towards the users total for the \"CPDN project\".

<shrug> but what do I know :-)

So those of us who took part in the spinup project, and suspended the normal projects to do so, are now going to lose that from their total even though it has been included for the last year or so?

Hmmm.

Perhaps the stats for the original HadSM3 project on BOINC should also be removed from the total. They are just as much \"not part of the current CPDN project\" as the spinup was.

5) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Host name (Message 26053)

Post:
Just in case anyone else should tread the same path ...

I found the answer on the boincaustralia web site. You have to ensure that the etc/hostname file contains ...

127.0.0.1 hostname localhost

... where hostname is your machines name.

6) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Host name (Message 26023)
Posted 14 Jan 2007 by old_user272
Post:
In the interest of experimentation I recently installed Linux (ububtu 6.10) on one of the machines on my network. I can\'t say I\'m overly impressed but that\'s probably a discussion for a different forum :-)

As far as BOINC goes it\'s all working as expected with the minor exception of BOINCView which doesn\'t display the host name on various screens. This, I assume, is connected with an entry added to the BOINC clients log when it starts up ...

gethostbyname failed

The host name is set up in the Linux boxes networking preferences, and everything else seems to be able to access it, so I\'m not sure why the BOINC client can\'t.

Anyone got any suggestions please?

If you press Z while graphics are being displayed then you can show the information panel. I seem to recall there was another key you could press to include \"Timesteps to next checkpoint\" in the display - but I\'ve forgotton what the key was.

Could somebody refresh my memory please.

Post:
Thanks Les.

Looks like CPDN has decided for me anyway :-) I tried to download a coupled model and it wouldn\'t let me - told me that it \"wouldn\'t finish in time\".

I\'ll wait until the sulphur is about to finish then try again, but it looks like that machine will have to switch to a different project.

I\'ve got an old 750MHz machine that is acting as a sort of glorified data logger and is on 24/7. Over the years it\'s done half a dozen slab models and is shortly going to finish a sulphur model (~192 days) - all without any problems.

I\'d like to leave it running CPDN, I prefer it to the other projects, but a \"back of an envelope\" calculation reckons it\'s going to take ~412 days to finish one of the new models.

I can\'t decide if it\'s worth it or not. I know CPDN will still accept the results after the deadline but will the result it generates be any use by then? Is there no way I can force it to get a new sulphur model?

Any comments to help me decide what to do...

11) Questions and Answers : Windows : Bionic worked for a day, not its giving me the \"cant connect\" error again! (Message 21418)
Posted 19 Mar 2006 by old_user272
Post:
This happened to my spinup in the early hours of this morning. I got woken up by a BOINC sound, (appropriate!), and found the \'Can\'t connect ...\'
This is the 3rd time in 3.5 months, and my cure is a simple reboot. It may not work for everyone.

It happend again last night so I tried rebooting first. I didn\'t solve the problem - I still couldn\'t connect to the host. I went through the procedure I detailed earlier and, thankfully, it worked.

I am _not_ going to do anything for the next 6 and a half days that might cause a reboot on this machine. Once the spinup is finished I might experiment...

I\'ve seen the \"cannot connect\" problem twice now, although I am running a spinup model and not the normal CPDN application. I _think_ it might be related to Windows Defender but I haven\'t chased it at all.

It\'s probably not worth it for you, with one days running it would be easier to completely restart, but the following has allowed me to recover my spinup model (93% completed after 2550 hours) twice now.

Stop BOINC.
Copy the complete BOINC folder to a safe location.
Uninstall BOINC.
Delete the BOINC folder.
Reboot the machine (this appears to be an important step).
Install BOINC and allow it to start - but don\'t allow it to attach to a project.
Close BOINC.
Delete _all_ the contents of the BOINC folder and copy back all of the contents of the saved folder.
Restart BOINC.

It should now connect and restart your original project from where it stopped.

Note that this is just one way I have got around the \"cannot connect\" problem. There may be an easier technique - but with 2550 hours at stake I didn\'t want to play around too much!

13) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC-Manager can\'t log on localhost (Message 16879)
Posted 30 Oct 2005 by old_user272
Post:
It\'s a new feature with BOINC 5.2.x

Look in your main BOINC folder and you will find a text file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg. The contents of this file is a randomly generated string which you use for the password on that machine.

You can change it to any string you like including, I think, a blank line.

I should have said... no screen savers running.

Does it crash after the model has started running or immediately after the download.

If it\'s the latter I\'ve found that rebooting in \"safe with networking\" mode and downloading the model from there will work.

15) Questions and Answers : Windows : Constant network traffic (Message 16780)
Posted 26 Oct 2005 by old_user272
Post:
I have \"Network activity suspended\" and yet the Zonealarm system tray icon and Overview page indicates traffic initiated by BOINC manager about every 2 seconds. No messages are reported during this time. Also an Einstein@Home work unit is listed as Ready to Report. I suspend all the work units listed and the traffic continues. Who could they be talking to?

boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe communicate with each other via ports - could that be the traffic you are seeing? When you close boincmgr down, to the tray, does the activity continue.

The new BOINC 5.22 runs with constant network traffic. I don\'t see why these projects can\'t run without continuous contact with their home servers.

Can you explain what you mean by \"continuous contact\".

I\'ve been running 5.22 for a couple of days now (and 5.21 before it) and it only appears to contact the server when needed - exactly the same as previous versions of BOINC.

May I then be confident that the percent complete value will let me estimate the final completion date reasonably accurately?

It should be in the right area. You can also calculate it from the timestep count and timesteps per second displayed in the visualisation.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what is going on?

The 5.2.x versions calculate the end time in a different way, one that takes into account how long previous results took. This works well for \"normal\" projects but not for projects like CPDN with it\'s long duration work units.

They want a lot back by Jan/Feb? but I am sure they will accept more after the deadline.

It looks like it should finish around the end of Feb 2006, roughly the same time as my spinup model (assuming no more rewinds of course) so I\'ll let it continue.

It isn\'t needed to seed the coupled spinup which has started (at least I hope we won\'t have to restart) but is needed for the coupled hindcast.

Ah, I was getting my projects confused.

Thanks for the clarification
