Iain,
Thanks for the response. I suspected that backing off would be better so I have been running at 75%. That allows a EU, PNW and a seti to run concurently. I will keep it this way for a while to see if the results improve.

Would you comment on the benchmark test. Doesn't a higher number indicate a faster processor which should give a shorter run time. Maybe the BM application needs to be downgraded or re-installed. It's not like it used to be.

Post:
I am a little confused about the deadline and hours to completion. This computer http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1060288 has been slowing down for the past 6 months to a very annoying slow pace. When I run a CPU benchmark the results vary each time. I noticed that when the results are a bigger number the time to completion jumps up dramatically. A full ocean just down loaded and the completion time is over 25,000 hours.

2/15/2012 5:37:09 PM Running CPU benchmarks
2/15/2012 5:37:09 PM Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks
2/15/2012 5:37:41 PM Benchmark results:
2/15/2012 5:37:41 PM Number of CPUs: 4
2/15/2012 5:37:41 PM 322 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
2/15/2012 5:37:41 PM 764 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU
2/15/2012 5:37:42 PM Resuming computation

The completion hours just jumped down to 5500 hours. If I remember correctly the numbers were 888 and 2300 now they are 322 and 764. Wouldn't it make sense that a higher floating point would yield better performance thus a shorter completion time.

The 16 to 25 seconds per time step is correct. It never was that way and I feel something is wrong somewhere.

Help me out here and I will clarify if you have any questions.

I have been sending trickles during the outage. Now that the project is up and running again I am sending trickles but they are not being posted to the workunit page. I hope all this crunching time isn't being wasted. Please advise if we keep going or abort and start a fresh unit.

7) Questions and Answers : Windows : Unable to get new work (Message 37307)
Posted 19 Jun 2009 by Dean M
Post:
If you had any suspended CPDN models in the Tasks tab, BOINC wouldn't allow you to download any more. That's the BOINC rule. No new tasks allowed for projects that have suspended tasks. You'd have needed to resume the nearly-completed models temporarily before requesting new models.

If you saw this sort of message

18/06/2009 01:18:31|climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
that would probably be the reason. BOINC was requesting no work at all.

It's a good idea to attach to one or two other projects as well just in case your computer ever runs out of work.

Thank you for the quick reply. I had no tasks suspended but so many finished models and was awaiting upload.

Problem solved with the new server. I missed 12 days of crunching on one machine. I am back in business with a fresh download.

That AMD Sempron is based on the AthlonXP. Unfortunately, the latest experiment (hadam3p) automatically errors out on CPUs without SSE2 support. So all AthlonXP based and Pentium 3 processors will crash with this new model. I would suggest going into your climateprediction.net preferences and only selecting other model types that you may want to run. Tolu, the programmer, knows of this problem, but I am unsure when it will be solved.

Thanks geophi,

I have never adjusted my preferences so how do I limit my downloads to specific model types?

One machine completed a big project last week. It downloads a new project and then immediately sends a finished report and uploads the result, which is zero. The BOINC server waits 24 hours to download a new project and the same thing happens. This has been going on daily for one week.

I disconnected from the project, un-installed the BOINC program from my machine, the re-installed BOINC and it goes back to where it left off.

What can I do to get a working project?

I\'m assuming this is only on one of your cmputers. Which computer is it?

Is internet connectivity otherwise good on that computer? Can you browse the internet?

Have you recently changed/upgraded some firewall software on that PC?

Is it on a wired or wireless network?

Don\'t detach yet.

Can you believe it. Just after I sent the error messages to this forum, the machine trickled up 4 results. Sorry to take up your time but it looks like the problem is solved. Maybe she just wanted more attention for all the good work she has been doing. Thanks for all the help.

This is my #1 computer, dual cpu, it is always online, I am using the internet on this machine to reply here. I restarted a few times after getting the original message. Occasionally one processor stops for some unknown reason and is idle. One other thing, I had to reset my router (wired) yesterday because I had no connection to the internet. After that, all machines were on line. This unit tried to trickle for 2 days without success.

> In the 'Add-ons' section, there is a program called ThreadMaster. This
> program controls one or more applications so that they do not use more than a
> certain amount of processor time. We have used it because some machines were
> shutting down or locking up (due to CPU overheating!) and now these machines
> have been running BOINC smoothly for a while.

That is exactly what I was looking for!!!!!!!! Thanks for the response.

When I installed BOINC last week, I came across an article on how to regedit my machine so it would control the amount to time the processor had the model crunching. I set my machine to split the work 50/50. I have now added two more machines and I want to limit the processor to less than 100%. Does anyone know where this information is located. I have covered all bases but it is eluding me right now.
