41) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Two Upgrades, one finds dual core, the other only a single core (Message 29825)

Post:

Does the operating system itself recognise and use the second core? If not, Boinc won\'t be able to do any better, regardless of what the various configuration files say.

Try updating the Bios if this is the case.

PS. Funny how few people read my post carefully. :-)

I think the reason people weren\'t sure about the processors is that you didn\'t actually say what the new processor was in your original post :-)

Well, this one\'s for the books. I did chase down the number of CPUs detected by the OS, Suse 10.2, which defaults to SMP. It only detected one, and checking the startup log against an identical X2 4200 in another system, running dual cores, it was clear that the two systems were seeing different cpus, and #2 saw only one core.

It just happened that I had another X2 4200 for another project, which I swapped into system #2. Surprise! Exactly the same readings, exactly the same result - one cpu.

Now how likely is it that I got *two* bad cpus in two separate orders?
Well, how close to zero can you count? So the real cause is now reduced to the old MB I was using in system 2. It is an old ECS system with AGP, and was probably designed before dual cores were shipping. Apparently, the MB doesn\'t have all of the circuits needed to register dual cores. <sigh>

I will shortly be swapping in a new ASUS MB, which should solve the weirdness I\'ve run into. But wotta PITA!

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions - they are much appreciated.

I\'m not positive, but I THINK that 5.8.16 has the local configuration over-ride file, whatever it\'s called. If so, then it may have picked up the \"On multiprocessors, use at most\" setting of 1 from the old BOINC folder.

If the file exists, you can either edit it, or use \"Clear\" in the Manager (somewhere) to remove the lot.
Then BOINC should follow what you have set in preferences on the server.

But it could be something else. BOINC is getting far too complex for it\'s own good.

I agree that BOINC has gone over the top in complexity. The graphics could easily be a separate package, maybe stats as well. This would be an improvement plus making changes easier. And the CPU recognition strings ought to be refreshed from the CPDN site when BOINC is installed.

As to the local file, auth_prefs.xml, it has 2 cpus as the max. Should work.
I actually think the problem is in recognizing the processor. It is not a \'Hammer\' processor (the original A64), but a late model dual core 4200, code name \'Toledo\'. It did get the proper string, but did not identify correctly. Weird.

PS. Funny how few people read my post carefully. :-)

In the last two days, I upgraded two single core AMD64 processors to dual core. In the first case, the drive had failed and I did a new Suse 10.2 install, a Linux 5.8.16 BOINC download, and the dual core was instantly recognized as: 2 A64 cores [Family 15 Model 35 Stepping 2]. The first system DL two sets of files and runs both.

The second system did not have a failed drive. I installed a SCSI drive and installed a new copy of Suse 10.2. I copied the current BOINC subdirectory over to the new drive and started it. It only recognized one cpu. I checked, found an old (5.4.8) copy of BOINC. I DL the 5.8.16, installed and restarted BOINC, yet it still only sees *one* cpu. It recognizes as: 1 AMD Hammer Family processor [Family 15 Model 35 Stepping 2].

It sees the right ID, but doesn\'t recognize it. Looks like something else is still left over from the earlier version of BOINC.

System differences:
First: MSI MB NEO4-F, PCIe video. Old CPU A64 3800 (512K cache, 2.4 GHz) single core. Suse 10.0 original OS, BOINC 5.4.8.
Second: Ecs PCI Extreme MB, AGP 8X graphics. Old CPU Opteron 148 (1MB cache, 2.2 GHz), BOINC 5.8.16.

How do I fix the second system to run both cores?

Thanks.

Post:
5.8.17 was built with a newer compiler version and uses versions of glibc and stdc++ that might not be available on some older distributions.

You should be able to run 5.8.16 - here are the download links:

5.8.16 release version

5.8.16 debug version

Great response, instant fix, dual core system now running again.
Thanks!

I really managed to screw up on this one. I am running Suse Linux 10, up to date, and was successfully running BOINC 5.8.11.

But the system was resetting from an unknown cause, so I decided to DL the latest BOINC, 5.8.17. The DL got stopped short of the end for some reason, but I continued to the end.

Now comes the Undead part. The .17 DL was bad, and could not be erased. Eventually I deleted and rebooted, did a full good DL (AFAICT), reinstalled. Starting up .17 creates the following error message:
./boinc: /lib/tls/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4\' not found (required by ./boinc)

This may be a Linux version limitation. Is it possible to get an older version of BOINC that will run on SL10? Or am I forced to upgrade SL10, which interferes with running Parallels?
46) Questions and Answers : Wish list : View Computers Has Excessive Clutter (Message 27137)

Recently the \'View Computers\' segment has picked up a large amount of essentially useless information for the majority of users. I refer to the new details placed between []such as:
[fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt lm 3dnowext 3dnow pni lahf_lm cmp_legacy]

Unfortunately this adds 11 lines to the normal 4 or 5, and forces me to scroll quite a bit to see all 6 or 7 systems I have up. I don\'t care whether this was an accident or deliberate - it is a real nuisance when I copy daily performance numbers because frequent upgrades have me with two unmergable systems, widely separated..

Two solutions appear easy w/o removing the function for those interested in the details.
1. Add an asterisk at the end of the std four lines, which turns the extra list on or off.
2. Add an entry in Preferences where I can specify the maximum number of lines per computer on the View list.

My preference is for #2 as that would allow those with 20 or 30 systems to get a one line, one page overview, or any other level of detail they desire. I\'d suggest a default of 4 lines for this parameter.

Finally, I like to ask for a merge capability that depends on name only. I have a number of upgraded systems with the same name that will not show on merge. So I wind up with obsolete systems hanging around for 30 days, and new systems that only show a small part of their total production. It\'s a small detail, but annoying. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

<sigh>
Let that be a lesson to me. While the BIOS detected the dual core, the initial install had been single core. Duh!

A system update with the Suse 10 DVD fixed the problem in about ten minutes.

As soon as the BOINC manager started, it started a second Hadsm... downloading.

Problem solved - replace the operator. :-}

I followed the instructions after a search for \'dual core\' told me to update my prefs and then update the project.

I was orig set a 2 cpus max, update w/ orig 2 cpu did not work. I changed home prefs to 3, and updated - no joy. Ditto with general prefs.

I went from A64 3200 to A64 X2 4400. Only one cpu detected and in use. Advice urgently requested.

There were problems last week with several things, and Carl was out of town. He got back in to town, fixed what he could on Friday, and now it\'s the weekend. Monday morning is 15-16 hours away. That\'s just when they start getting in. Give them some hour after to work on things.

People need to understand these people do not work 24/7.

Thanks. This is what I mean when I request better communications. Just letting us know there is a problem and approximately when it will be worked on is great.

When stuff goes wrong, even as things (apparently) unimportant as credits for CPDN number crunching, I always wonder what *I* am doing wrong, and when it continues without comment, it\'s easy to conclude that I did something wrong. When I can\'t find any problem at my end, it\'s pretty frustrating.

I think the people involved in CPDN are well aware of human limitations, so we\'ll give the guys plenty of time to get credits up again.

Again, thanks for the update.

The only thing that has changed recently, is the arrival of a new trickle server, and an extended shutdown to allow one of the servers to re-do a database.

Does this imply that the drop is caused by no trickle calculations until the old server is back up? Or is it that the new trickle server is not doing calculations through some fault?

I\'ve been running CPDN in 6 systems steadily for some time. I\'ve also been tracking the RAC. The typical load for all of the systems has not changed more than 5%, but my RAC has dropped from 2433 on 10Mar06 to 1733 as of 29apr06.

Along with that my team, PacificNorthwest, has dropped similarly. Both of these drops have had no explanation that I have seen.

While it may make sense to change the credit calculation (I have no problem with that), please tell us when this is to happen. It isn\'t the changes that are the problem, it is the lack or warning *or* explanation that causes problems.

Don\'t assume we can find explanations in these boards because I have tried. Searching for Credits yields 29 pages of hits. This is too much to plow thru in hope of an answer.

Better communications is all I am asking for.

Post:
After several aborted CPDN runs, I have finally figured just what is causing the event. This last one happened with a file transfer error, which is on a RAID1 drive. It also happened around the time I was running defrag.

There is a secondary problem for me in that early aborts of a CPDN session due to errors rather than user action causes an annoying 24 hour wait for another work unit.

In one case, the download did not make the checksum match, and further downloads were delayed by 24 hours.

I am requesting two changes:
1. Detect a locked file and wait for acess rather than killing the run.
2. Detect download and run errors, and retry rather than simply abort.

I still think a 64 bit executable would speed things up significantly. Sixteen registers plus SSE3 ought to make a real difference.

I agree, and it does speed things up considerably (based in testing on sulphur alpha 6-7 months ago), but there is now some concern that the results may be different enough in 64bit compared to 32bit that it might screw up model comparisons. Then there may also be automated distribution problems where BOINC has to be smart enough to download the right hadsm executable based on whether a PC is running a 64bit OS or not. But I don\'t know if BOINC can do that.

> \"Results may be different enough in 64bit compared to 32bit...\"
This could be bad news. I\'ve done some Fortran number crunching, though nothing on the scale of CPDN\'s 500K line monster. Clearly there is a difference in 32 and 64 bit accuracy, rounding and truncation. Tracking down the reason for the difference could be a career, not a job. :-{

The first step would be to run identical tests in AMD, Intel and your supercomputer to see where the differences lie in each section. Then compare the hardware rounding and truncation, plus over/underflow handling to establish which approach gives the most accurate calculation. Other possibilities include differences in compiler optimizations between 32 and 64 bit modes and undiscovered hardware bugs in the new 64 bit chips. This could be *really* tough to find.

Another possible slowdown in your system...

If this is a socket754 3200+, and you have a Via chipset motherboard, it may be that the memory is running at 333 MHz instead of 400 MHz. Some Via chipset motherboards would automatically decrease memory speed to 333 MHz if 1 GB or more of memory was installed. CPDN is highly dependent on memory bandwidth and latency and anything that slows that down, also slows CPDN down.

Actually, it is a 939 socket 3200 with 2x512 MB 400MHz memory.
In any case, the screen saver was the culprit, and time on the A64 in 64 bit mode has dropped to 11:32 from 14 hours. This is very close to the W2K speed, maybe a bit faster, with the same processor and memory.

One question: If CPDN is sensitive to memory, is it also sensitive to L2 cache size?

Thanks to the authors of both comments.

There\'s something wrong with that performance. With a 3200+ (socket 754) in 64bit Fedora Core 3, mine ran at about 3.45 to 3.5 s/TS, which was only very slightly slower than WinXP 32bit on the same PC. Something else is going on there. Is the screensaver set to blank? Is cool n quiet off? Are you running the graphics much?

Well, it looks like you were dead on. Apparently I failed to set the screen saver up. Suse 10 has the screen saver in a different place, and it took me about 10 minutes to find it via right click on a empty window. The SS was set to random, which could account for the extra time.

Thanks for your insight. I still think a 64 bit executable would speed things up significantly. Sixteen registers plus SSE3 ought to make a real difference.

I am running a Suse 10 AMD64 3200 in 64 bit mode. Under that, a 10802 timestep sulphur runs 14 hours (almost exact). The same processor in another box under W2K 32 bit runs sulphur in 12 hours. This is a 2 hour penalty for a 64 bit OS.

If the prediction of a 30% speedup for a 64 bit executable is close to right, then making one for Linux where there is already good support for 64 bit OS would be very beneficial.

In the above example, sulphur runs could drop to around 9 hours, a *big* improvement over the 12 and 14 hour times I currently get.

The new login page is, frankly, a sloppy piece of work. I\'m being polite - my feelings after trying to login and having the web page screw me repeatedly, are much stronger.

The two login methods **are not independent**.

Got that? If you start to login in the top, change your mind and login in the bottom, with a carefully checked account code (which is unnecessarily long), and press the bottom login, the dumb web page asks for your password, ignores the correct account code while erasing it, and puts you back where you started, previous entries erased.

Excpet the only way at this point to get rid of the name part is to close the browser completely, erase the cache and start over. Ghu help you if you make any mistakes at all.

That web guy flunks human interface basics.
