1) Message boards : Number crunching : HADAM3P-EU also disappeared (Message 42128)

Post:
After leaving with several problems with a frozen cursor in running CPDN, I have now returned on my MacBookPro to find I had 2 HADAM3P-EU tasks marked NO RESUBMISSION, but continued crunching them until one developed a CALCULATION ERROR, and i was informed that it was now NOT NEEDED. So I decided to ABORT the other. However, I since find that the trickles have been credited and the data seems to be updated on both these tasks, so it seems the work was not wasted and I should probably have been able to complete the 2nd task. There was no other cruncher with a task in either of the 2 work units concerned.

I have now been sent 2 HadCM3N tasks on the Mac OSX 10.5.8, and also the same on Parallels Virtual Windows XP. As the CPUs seem to have a problem running concurrently, I have allowed each preference to run 12 hours alternately every day and they seem to be quite happy doing that. It will be interesting to compare the progress of each over the next 50 days (or maybe 100 days).

All seems to be running smoothly CPDN on OSX (touch wood).
Third day running 2 EU tasks with 2 tasks in reserve.
Clocking up just under 800 credits per day
Looks as though they are going to finish, the tasks taking a total of about 5 days.

Previously much slower and temperamental when I was running on Parallels Windows XP at the same time.
Probably had not allowed the right amount of memory for each.

Great we got the EU tasks.
But unfortunately we seem to be back with the same long standing problem of Calculation errors yet again.
Is it really worthwhile continuing.

Please convince me.

To Derrick (and any other Parallels users on BOINC CPDN)

I am intrigued to see that of the 7 EU tasks I have had downloaded from my starting on Parallels for Mac Windows XP, one had a calculation error (and was replaced after the the first day's original 6 tasks sent), and when I looked at the 7 work unit folders, I find that every other task without exception has had either a download error or a calculation error. So the present position is that after 3 days I have 2 active tasks with some trickles credited and 4 tasks waiting in the queue cache.

On inspecting all of the various computers' full list of tasks, it would appear that the success rate of completed tasks is just as bad as the record with FAMOUS tasks. However (touch wood) my 2 active tasks seem to be progressing normally so far.

I would be interested to have any feedback on others who may be following the same path with Parallels for Mac. Of particular interest, has anyone else had "Waiting for memory" messages on Dual Core Macs? What sort of success rates are others with Parallels for Mac having as compared with the other tasks in their work units?

I may be speaking too soon, but if my tasks do complete successfully using Parallels,, why should all others fail. I am probably tempting providence by my aforesaid remarks, but ........

I had volunteered to be a beta-tester, but was so fed up with the situation in CPDN that I ducked out of that option.
If only I had known that I could have been happily crunching tasks in beta, I would have been satisfied instead of @leaving the sinking ship@ as I have done up until now!!!

Since my last visit (6 hours ago), I have set up BOINC on Windows XP with Parallels Desktop on my MacBookPro and it is running CPDN Eu tasks apparently successfully although one of the 2 tasks running is frequently suspended "awaiting memory", but at least something is happening!!!

Les.

I am back "visiting" to see if there has been any progress in availability of any work on CPDN for my MacBookPro (Intel), but, alas, negative on that front.

However, I think you did not answer the question put by Dave.
He was wondering why he had been sent 2 FAMOUS tasks in March 2011 when the Server Status page shows no tasks available.
I think the answer to that is that a few FAMOUS tasks have been resent after being returned from other crunchers on reaching the task time limit, or maybe on reorganizing the data on the transfer between the server's hard disks.

Still looking forward to some time when I shall be able to make a useful contribution to CPDN.
What a shame that the birthplace of Macs cannot provide work for Macs, and had to rely on Oxford Uni in UK to do so!!!!!!

Have any developments arisen for CPDN to give tasks that can be crunched by MacBookPro (Intel) computers?

Are we still waiting for a programmer?

Is there a date when action is likely to take place, or has CPDN now given up on using Macs, (and Linux)?

If you can let me know if there is any possibility of a resumption, I will continue to check the Forum occasionally as I have just done, but, if not, I will know that it is a waste of time and shall cease to do so.

Thanks for reply, Geophi.

Pity I can't try the % key to see if I can display the data on Mac OSX, as I have run out of tasks and am now quitting CPDN for a few months "rest". Am quite disillusioned that I am not able to do anything constructive with my Mac's time.

Shall look back in a few months time to check progress of CPDN.

Would not be so bad if it were not for all the calculation errors.
Very disappointed, but enough is enough.

Do you see text in the boxes on the graphics display for FAMOUS tasks?
It was quite interesting to see progress on the other task types run on Macs.
And do Windows versions of FAMOUS show the text on the graphics display?
I get none, and wondered if this was the reason that the Mac version of FAMOUS was faster.

I am now left with only one task between 2 CPUs, so it seems that I will be leaving CPDN very soon now.

Having only 2 completed from the last 26 FAMOUS tasks, that is disappointing with no other options available on CPDN.

Now running last 2 tasks, which are in all probability going to fail soon, and it looks as though my Mac (and others) will be redundant for CPDN.

I would be interested to know if all the apparent calculation errors have been of any use to CPDN or has my computing time been wasted over the last 2 months plus. It is demoralizing, and I shall cease CPDN if no more tasks become available after these 2 tasks finish crunching. And I may look back in a few months time to see if there becomes anything useful that can be done at that time.

Amazing!!!
After 17 failures - all marked as Exit process with error code 22 (-234) with invalid Theta
They were tasks classes;- s 1, v 5, w 1, x 10.
These are since beginning of December 2010.

And I had yesterday, the very first since December 1st, 2 tasks completed.
Theses are both x class tasks.
But both suspended of course because of the Server being off line!!!

Hopefully everything will be back to normal soon when the experts arrive.
I am now keeping "Network Activity Suspended" until the Servers are back on line .
I have 6 tasks to go, which, barring computation errors, would last 30 days.
So probably about a fortnight before I shall need more tasks.

Thanks for telling me the Mac is no good with FAMOUS and change to Windows!!!
but to be serious, will the SSE2 problem still be a problem when using a virtual Windows XP by using Parallels DeskTop?

If so, I shall quit using OSX 10.5.8, and use Windows XP on Parallels DeskTop for Mac.

At the very least I will be able to compare the relative performance.

As a matter of interest, why should the SSE2 cause a problem.
I have no idea what it is, I am afraid to say.
All I have found, which seems vaguely understandable is:-
The key benefits of SSE2 are that MMX instructions can work on 128-bit data blocks, and that SSE instructions now support 64-bit floating-point values. ...

Any chance they will be of a different variety that might possibly occasionally complete like they used too? I may have been sent 2 of the new batch as I see the "stock" of FAMOUS task has been replenished.

I have had 2 more "Calculation errors" today bringing my 100% successive FAMOUS failure rate since beginning of December to 15 tasks.

All that I have inspected have ended with "Invalid Theta messages":-
