21) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : CPDN Sulfur_cycle 4.21 (Message 16181)
Posted 23 Sep 2005 by John Price
Post:
The problem is on the server. The link between results and workunits is broken for Sulphur_cycle and Carl is trying to fix the problem.

Thanks! For completion after 24hrs it has downloaded a Hadsm3 4.13 which is running fine.

This may not be the same problem as carpinus, but it is similar. I have just upgraded to Fedora core 4 and reinstalled Boinc Manager 4.43. I attached to the CPDN project and it started downloading a \"sulphur_cycle\" work unit, but after compleitng the download the error message came \"download failed\" it went through this 3 times and then a message came that I had reached my daily limit and I would have to wait 24 hours before trying again.

I proceeded to attach to SETI@HOME and LHC@ATHOME and both are running fine.

Does the Sulphur_cycle not like linux as this would be the first I have tried to run it on Linux?

23) Questions and Answers : Windows : Recognition of trickles (Message 15954)
Posted 12 Sep 2005 by John Price
Post:
In the previous iteration of the server software, and at least since sometime in July, it was updating the credits about twice a day, even though the trickles were listed nearly immediately. Does it look like this has changed?

If there was a change in July it escaped my notice. When I first logged in this morning (NZ Time) a whole day of crunching had given me no trickles and no credits. I see now the trickles have arrived but the credits are still ourtstanding.
I will keep an eye on it but it looks as though you have answered my question.
Could we have a \"credits pending\" list?

It seems that there is now a delay between trickles uploaded and recognition of credit,since the new software upgrade.
Have we moved to an arrangement where there is a \"Credits pending\" like other BOINC projects, instead of immediate crediting? If so will there be add a \"credits pending\" option on the account statistics section of \"your account\" page?

&gt; Most people find sulphur timesteps take about 60% longer. Comparing a fast set
&gt; of parameter for slab against a slow set for sulphur could change that by a
&gt; further 10%. Therefore a little suprising to see you being 80% slower.
&gt;
&gt; Perhaps the parameters thing has hidden the possibility that different
&gt; computers can be affected differently for a further 10% difference.
&gt;
&gt; (I have been saying the model is 2.7 times longer. *1.6 for timesteps being
&gt; slower and *1.67 for 5 phases instead of 3)

Hmmm! Important to know!
I thought it was a machine problem so reset the project. It was showing 1900hrs to complete. After reset, a hadsm3 4.13 model is showing 690hrs for completion.
Next time I get a sulphur model I will persist.

Post:
Had to rebuild a PC and since reinstalling Boinc 4.45 I have been unable to produce work as at start up the error \"failed to connect\" comes up at start up.

So can\'t connect to any projects. So can\'t do work.
I have 5 other machines and this is the first time I have struck this problem.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled but no success.
Can anyone suggest a way to solve this?

AMD Athlon 2000+XP

Post:
I had a similar problem with a "sulphur cycle" work unit on my
WinXP Professional laptop.
Pentium 4 2.66Ghz

I have had problems with this box before and thought it was PC problem so reset the project.

It was running at 5.21 sec/ts. (usually around 2.9 sec/ts) and telling me that I would not make the deadline.
Is it a fact that the sulphur cycles are slower to produce?
33) Questions and Answers : Windows : I have ended up with 2 cross platform ID\'s (Message 14951)
Posted 7 Aug 2005 by John Price
Post:
&gt; Probably the usual method: have an appearance of all your projects on one
&gt; computer.
&gt; After a while, (a week?), they will re-sync to the most recent ID.
&gt; The projects don't have to stay on that computer afterwards.
&gt;
&gt;
&gt;

Thanks! Will do.

Can anyone give me an idea how to get all my projects back on to the one ID? Prior to 1 August they where all on the latter ID. Not really sure why this happened, but I think it may have something to do with my attempts to alter the the computer name which was spelt wrongly in CPDN.
It was also at the time when the Carl refreshed back to the old data after the http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=2939 problems

35) Questions and Answers : Windows : Negative Credit (Message 14821)
Posted 31 Jul 2005 by John Price
Post:
&gt; The credits have been recalculated. Just to clarify, if your results took a
&gt; big drop recently (most likely before the final recalculation which was just
&gt; completed), it should be back to normal now that I have sorted things out
&gt; using the trickle information. This information happily/luckily has the
&gt; correct hostid/userid info that the database problems &amp; merge messed up
&gt; when the database was in a bad state around June.
&gt;
&gt; The lost credits you may have experienced temporarily had nothing to do with
&gt; CPDN trying to arbitrarily "reinvent" how we do credits, or claiming that
&gt; people cheated, or anything bad. It was just part of the "disaster recovery"
&gt; as I built up the result host/user id fields from the (more reliable) trickle
&gt; data. I have added a new function in the merge to backup the original host id
&gt; to further help prevent this in the future. Hopefully the database is now
&gt; fine-tuned and this won't happen again.
&gt;
&gt;

Thanks Carl!
I'm back on board with the project I am passionate about.
This is really important stuff that I am dedicated to.
I don't want credits I am not entiltled to but I do want recognition for work done.

Post:
&gt; &gt; Michael;
&gt; &gt; 1.how many credits did you lose or gain?
&gt;
&gt; None, as far as I can tell.
&gt;
&gt; &gt; 2.Have you ever used the merge computers facilty?
&gt;
&gt; Yes.
&gt;
&gt; &gt; 3.As far as I am concerned, ALL my credits were correctly gained!!! I DID
&gt; do
&gt; &gt; the work for the 138,000 credits and it has now been taken off me.
&gt;
&gt; Then tell them about the results that are missing. I have archived every
&gt; result I've done, including back to pre-BOINC days.
&gt;
&gt; Michael
&gt; <img border="0" src="http://www.boincstats.com/stats/banner.php?id=2922" />
&gt;

When you say you are archiving your results is this an add-on program or some facility in BOINC?
37) Questions and Answers : Windows : Negative Credit (Message 14801)
Posted 31 Jul 2005 by John Price
Post:
&gt; I'm not "readjusting credits in an ad-hoc manner" -- the database had some
&gt; serious problems while I was away and I'm trying to do disaster recovery. The
&gt; main problem was in people who used the "merge computers" function during the
&gt; time the database was FUBAR -- their host record was deleted permanently but
&gt; the update on the result table (to the new, merged id) was never made. I have
&gt; just added a separate insert into an "audit trail/merged host" table to help
&gt; prevent this in the future.
&gt;
&gt; I don't see any missing machines for your account, so unless you can point out
&gt; something specific you probably were just gaining "false" credits due to the
&gt; database errors from before. Unfortunately it is something that people don't
&gt; mind when they gain, but if it's then corrected down it seems "bad!"
&gt;
&gt;

It is beginning to look as if my problem is largely around the use of the "Merge Computers" facilty. Have you any way of reinstating that information, or is it lost for ever? I have used the facilty extensively not knowing that it would result in lost credits, and I certainly have not kept a separate database of my own. What information would you want from me to make a case for reinstatment of credits lost by this recent database recalculation?

Posted 30 Jul 2005 by John Price
Post:
&gt; &gt; As I pointed out in my original message, it is important to get the
&gt; database
&gt; &gt; right but why not just work on getting FUTURE credits right, instead of
&gt; &gt; see-sawing up and down to gain 6,000 one day and lose 84,000 the next.
&gt;
&gt; Presumably because they would like all credits right instead of just future
&gt; ones. Also, in your zeal to hold on to credits you, yourself, acknowledge not
&gt; to have been fairly earned, you are completely forgetting all the people who
&gt; were not beneficiaries of such mistakes. They're just ensuring a fair playing
&gt; field, and I see no reason why they shouldn't fix obvious problems merely
&gt; because they happened before today. As Carl said, if you have actual results
&gt; for which you are not receiving credit, mention it to him. Absent that, it's
&gt; hard to get too worked up over your plight.
&gt;
&gt; &gt; I find it extrodinary that I could have been the benficiary of 84,000
&gt; false
&gt; &gt; credits out of a total of 138,000. I have dedicated six machines to CPDN
&gt; for
&gt; &gt; close to 12 months and the idea that that only produces 54,000 credits
&gt; seems
&gt; &gt; hard to beleive. ther minimum spec is an AMD 1800+ with the top machine
&gt; &gt; AMD3000+ 64bit.
&gt;
&gt; I glanced at your machines, and you've done very little work with them per
&gt; machine. (I have almost as many credits as your total with *one* computer.
&gt; and it was off for months when I moved.) When you say you "dedicated six
&gt; machines for 12 months", including an AMD 3000+ 64 bit, that leaves a
&gt; different impression in most people's minds than what is listed. That AMD 64
&gt; bit hasn't returned a single work unit (although it's progressing on one) even
&gt; though it's been signed up for over 7 months. It has only produced 53
&gt; trickles. The others seem similar. Again, if you're missing results, tell
&gt; Carl.
&gt;
&gt; &gt; I urge you to look again at this issue with a regard to a FAIRER
&gt; resolution to
&gt; &gt; database issues. Why not roll back to yesterdays situation and ensure
&gt; the
&gt; &gt; database works correctly from here on????
&gt;
&gt; Because people who *did* do the work for all their credits would like to
&gt; compete on an even playing field. Enjoy your 54,000 credits. That's a lot!
&gt; <img border="0" src="http://www.boincstats.com/stats/banner.php?id=2922" />
&gt;

Michael;
1.how many credits did you lose or gain?
2.Have you ever used the merge computers facilty?
3.As far as I am concerned, ALL my credits were correctly gained!!! I DID do the work for the 138,000 credits and it has now been taken off me.
4.As this thread id developing it appears to be a problem with merged Computers. I have had to reinstall Windows on all my machines over the last 6 months, that my friend is why all the machine numbers are 6 figures because they were merged with the older ones. You may note that "Bolton" is the only one left with the original numbers of 952 as this is the only one that I have not renewed Windows. All the others had numbers around this or less as I was one of th first to convert to BOINC platform. All the credits from merged machines appear to be lost. I have also been experimenting with various Linux Distributions and this has been followed by much merging of computers as Linux is not as trouble free as it is made out to be.

I would ask that you supply an answer to 1. and 2. which may add to the information on this issue.

&gt; Hello Carl,
&gt;
&gt; It's me, I'm back, the central scrutinizer ;-)
&gt;
&gt; I just went over the inventory of my machines, and it seems I have lost ALL
&gt; points from ALL older machines being merged into newer identities. Yes, I said
&gt; ALL points from ALL older machines!
&gt;
&gt; If this is your best shot at "correcting" the scores and you actually don't
&gt; have a valid backup from some point in time, I really think you should follow
&gt; the advice of John Price and "undo" the changes made within the last 24
&gt; hours...
&gt;
&gt; Otherwise I trust that you'll get the attention of a lot of unhappy
&gt; "customers" within the next day or two!
&gt;
&gt; Sweet dreams...
&gt;

Could let me know how you go about looking at the inventory of machines as I would like to do the same as you have to see how much I have lost from the merging process?
