41) Message boards : Number crunching : Status of plans for shorter wus? (Message 27064)
Posted 24 Feb 2007 by [B^S] mavau
Post:
Carl, I hope everyone will join me in thanking you for your taking the time to reply to the thread -- and for all the hard work.
On a lost message, I said I was hopeful for a shorter WU.
I wasn\'t into flaming or anything.
I just don\'t like losing losing a work unit for avoidable reasons, and I think one of them is how many other things change while you\'re running one unit.

To sum up my CPDN experience:
My XP machines have never minded shutdowns, power failures, me pulling the plug or whateve (even a power supply burnout).
But I\'ve been bitten twice with updating BOINC, following advice that I should do so. (on the forums and in the GUI)
I\'ve been able to tweak a backup on the second glitch. See here, which gives me the feeling exiting BOINC may be a problem (perhaps something to do with the write to disk parameter).
I\'ve just had an issue with a new laptop using Vista -- logging off when I wanted to switch users -- which destroyed the model.
As it was only five days old, I let it go.
I\'m going to test solutions for Vista.
There is the possibilty of going back to an earlier version of files.
Also, I\'ll try to see how it can be run as a service with Vista.

What I would like:
A page with info on developments.
A page with dos and don\'ts (if it ain\'t broke, dont\' fix it).
A page with what the new results are doing with the different parameters.
A page with info on tweaking the XML files. (The info is scattered around and incomplete)
And the link for the forum search in my signature built into the forum pages.

I hope I\'m not being offensive to anybody.
And I don\'t mind helping.

You didn\'t dream it. And I also think it would be nice to have some info.
And a regular update on results.
btw, the latest generation models give me over 1800 hours for 50% on my P4 (which took about the same time as yours for the previous one).
Good luck.

Pentium 3.2 GHZ HT, two concurrent models: two trickles a day, around 24 hours per trickle for each model (one trickle every model year or .625%). Quite normal, though some overclocked machines do better.
This is a demanding time-consuming, project.

I\'m going to put it back into the BB one, just to remind myself.

Thanks a million, Carl.
(though I\'ll have to wait a year or so for the million credits, unless I get an admin to let me use a few machines at work)
Again, congrats for all the hard work and let\'s hope it wil be useful for us all.

Willy, thanks for your reply.
I think the SAP/BBC issue should be discussed among their participants.
Two things to consider: I understand new SAP work has been issued, so the project is stil live.
Maybe there is time to look at the BBC experiment, since it\'s not yet complete.
Can we have the opinion of users switching to the main CPDN project after completing theit BBC runs?
Carl, sorry for the trouble, can we just get back to where we were?
(Actually, I\'d be glad to get the classic counted in ;-) )
I certainly go with Ian for the spinup.

OTOH, spinup had been merged into the credits long ago.
So instead of my old classic credits being taken into account, which was a nice surprise, I now \'lose\' the spinup.
Willy: where did you see the spinup and classic credits in the stats?
(Ian, we were writing at the same time :-) )

51) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC 5.2.2 released (Message 16685)
Posted 20 Oct 2005 by [B^S] mavau
Post:
So far I have found two problems with this 5.2.2 release:
- There is no Hide function on the menu. I can merely minimize it to the taskbar, but not hide it to the systray. I find this a bit annoying.

I had noticed it in 5.2.1. Annoying is right. If you click on Exit, it just shuts everything down.
Workaround: I click on the rightmost cross (close window). That way, I only have the BOINC icon in the systray, as of old.
A final quibble though. Hovering over the icon doesn\'t show you the updated percentages (at least in 5.2.1, I\'ll let you know if it\'s fixed in 5.2.2). The stats seem to remain frozen at the last time you opened BOINC.
52) Questions and Answers : Windows : Master file fetch failed (Message 14247)
Posted 9 Jul 2005 by [B^S] mavau
Post:
This is a common question.
Should not be a serious problem.
It can happen when your connection is not working.
A forum search shows this:
<a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_text_search_action.php?search_string=master+file+fetch+failed&amp;titles=Search">master file fetch failed</a>

Or when a server is temporarily down.
I had the message a few times during latest trouble so I guess that's what happened to you too.

btw: If you want to do a search, you have to click on the link top of the start page for the forum. Not very convenient so I've added a link right of my signature.
Is it helpful?

&gt; I've had 3 models upload during this trickle drought, and all of them were
&gt; labelled as "Success" on the results page, despite having less than 2/3 of the
&gt; normal 72 trickles.
&gt;
I also got success, but not the right credit total.
Disabling BOINC access seems to be the best solution till we get news.
Latest is I see trickles from 16 June, though total hasn't changed, so hopefully all is not lost ;-)

The message comes from trying to run the GUI at the same time as the client.

58) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Home Page Info (Message 13075)
Posted 2 Jun 2005 by [B^S] mavau
Post:
There have been a few server problems recently. Lots of questions asked, and a lof of time and energy spent trying to get and provide answers.
I think a lot of people would find it useful to have a link on the home page providing some info about what they should do.
Some basics I can think of:

<b>No scheduler response:</b>
<i>A message on the home page stating the problem and what users should do about it.</i>
e.g, When trickles are not getting through: <ul>
<li>Temporarily disable BOINC network access in Manager and wait for an announcement.</li>
<li>No need to suspend project.</li>
</ul>
<b>New BOINC versions</b>
<ul><li>Links to BOINC main page and opinions</li>
<li>Links to possible issues</li>
</ul>

My worry is the number of people who drop out temporarily or outright when the project doesn't work as expected. (lost 1,000 since latest trouble).
Finally, since server problem seems to have been solved:
<b>A message that everything's all right again!</b>
And send one to all the teams.

Post:
Have you already completed models?
Climate keeps a lot of data on the disk.
to check for dead or complete models:
Look in your BOINC directory (normally in program files if you're using Windows)
You'll see a projects folder.
In that folder there is a climateprediction.net subfolder.
Inside that are your models.
The current model shows as two files and a folder:
one .xml file, one .zip file and a folder with the same name.
I'm not sure about dead models, but a finished model will just have the folder with a lot of zip files in it.
What I do:
When a new model has sent its first trickle and the previous model doesn't show in the work tab in the BOINC interface (that's to make sure) I move the completed model to a backup I keep on another disk.
That frees up space for BOINC (you can see that in the disk tab) and keeps the zipped files in case they're required for further studies.
You can also look at this <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=2581">thread</a>.
