ARRGH! I already reset and deleted the backup. :(

Good to know though. Thanks Carl.

> Exit status -187 is a results upload error and the Output file error:
> -1 in your stderr can only originate from the server when it detects a
> permanent upload failure. So there doesn't seem to be much point in continuing
> with the model to me.

OK, I've reset...

So then model backups really aren't very useful.

Thanks Thyme. :)

> I have the same problem -- I've tried to have BOINC only run after I've not
> used the computer myself for either 1 or 3 minuts. neither setting worked.
> Would you mind posting some specific settings that should allow the project to
> be suspended while I'm "manually" using the machine?

There is a known bug that if you have any other venue specific preferences active, this feature will not work. Delete the other preference settings, (work, home, etc...) and only use the default. Update the project from the GUI, and it should function properly.

I had a WU that was eaten by a BOINC hang, and I restored an earlier backup of the WU to continue processing. All has been going well, (and transistioned to phase 2) but looking at the WU results, it's listed as over and done with a client error. (exit status -187)

Is this WU going to be valid if I run it to completion, or should I reset?

> That is quite normal. Unlike other projects, CPDN does not routinely send WUs
> to more than one participant. There is more than enough work to do without
> duplicating everything!

S@H (under BOINC) and other projects do this to verify the science value of the WU prior to granting credit, not to generate more work for people to do.

This method obviously doesn't work so well with CPDN as the extremely long process times could mean waiting a year or more to receive credit.

They must be using extremely low priority threads.

BOINC is very low priority, so it gets out of the way of most applications. If something comes along running a lower priority than BOINC, the opposite happens and BOINC holds them up. (people report slowdowns with outlook express for example)

> Predictor is also waiting on hardware from dell (and waiting, and waiting, and
> ...). :( If anyone can let dell know that this particular snafu has an
> audience measured in the tens of thousands they might get the lead out and do
> something about it.

I liked a comment on the Predictor board. Something to the effect of, put a notice on the front page that the project is being held up by Dell, and give Dell a link. ;)

This is kind of a curious comment...

How do you propose to deal with the whiners? And what percentage of active/posting users would you like to see before you consider it worth your time to do so?
