Another Team Milestone;
2 GigaBoincs across all projects.
Not bad for only having 69 active members from the 273 with credit.
Well done a'body.

Somebody with a Champagne gif could maybe insert it here 8)

Chalk up another UOTD for me (just for joining and bothering to create a profile) at the recently opened but not fully active yet, rival climate project based at NASA, Climate@home.
They're using the same Virtual Machine route that Test4Theory at Cern uses so you need to instal Oracle's Virtual Box before you can attach. No work from them as yet but I expect a heafty initial download to set up the first VM image (T4T was 1.3GB), with subsequent task downloads being less, but also a massive 3GB upload on completion according to one of the very few posts so far on the boards there. Hope they find a way to compress that to a more manageable level before too many people arrive and complain. Ah, Alphas and Betas are such fun 8)

I've set up the team there just to get us rolling and will relinquish control to Ian once he gets there. I spotted the link on the CPDNBeta board last week but Tim got on board before me as usual. Hopefully he'll see this and join up.

I've had a few Error in download's recently, reporting as such in a couple of minutes, but this one has got stuck in transit trying to download 6 files since yesterday. The wingman started it in Nov but it took until 4 Feb to report its download error so I suspect that's what's going to happen here. I would have thought that there would have been a shorter deadline to complete the download rather than the full task deadline. The status column already declares No Resubmission and I've just noticed its deadline as Aug 2022 so obviously there's something not right. All very similar to JIM's experience below.
Event log shows:
05/02/2013 19:38:51 | climateprediction.net | Temporarily failed download of HadISST_SST_N96_1990_12_1993_01f.gz: connect() failed
05/02/2013 19:38:51 | climateprediction.net | Backing off 20 min 4 sec on download of HadISST_SST_N96_1990_12_1993_01f.gz
05/02/2013 19:38:54 | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
05/02/2013 19:38:56 | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

but there are no other reports on the boards of servers being down so I suspect the files are on a server which has now been replaced but the files have not been moved over to that replacement.

It gets one more manual retry then it's for the chop.

I aborted each of the 6 stuck transfers so the task declared itself as download failed and then phoned home to report as such. I think a simple abort may have left some unwanted bits and pieces lying about so this way it tidied up properly on its way out.

100 new 40-year models available.
Get 'em while they're hot. Just got 2 so that fills this machine 'til mid Jan with 4 models running.

Seasons' Greetings, Yuletide felicitations, Merry Chrismukkah, Festivus, Pancha Ganapati, Dongzhi ..............
Fit like a'body.

Felt I'd slipped down the order a bit too far so I've been doing a few climate models while the search for new bosons has run out of work while they sort out some problems. Seems work is rare, here, as well and as there hasn't been a lot of work at CPDN Beta, even after the awaited upgrade here there might not be any new flavour of model.
I've completed 2 hadcm3n, 1 in progress and one failing with an Invalid Theta at half distance. Wingman's model has just fallen over at the same point.
Another resend model has just sneaked (much prefer that to "snuck") in while I wasn't looking. 2 different errors reported for it so far so we'll see how it fairs.

That recent UoTD got me to 45 although some were before I joined the team. Our glorious leader, Ian, may have more but I think he has a few split personalities so it's not so easy to get his total.
I've also recently become a Boinc millionaire at last. Woo hoo

A belated Happy Boinc Birthday, everyone.
It's 6 years since the BBC experiment started, with Ian starting up the team there on 16th Feb 2006. (I sneaked in early on the 9th before they were officially open and got user ID 26)

I've not been doing any Climate stuff recently, concentrating on the new Virtual Machine models from Cern. They're running actual data from the collider and do their stuff in their own little box inside your machine in their own fancy scientific version of Linux. Not for the faint-hearted. Each WU runs for 24 hours but will connect to Cern several times during that and reboot the Virtual Machine each time it gets a new job. (Just for clarity; it only reboots the Virtual box within your box, not your real box) Thought that would make things clearer, but maybe it didn't 8/
From the results the Cern guys are ruling out more and more energy levels where the elusive Higgs ISN'T thus narrowing the areas that they want to look at more closely.

Won't be long now until I get to that first Mega Boinc milestone 8)

Ye, a deadline prompted a slightly premature release to the masses. Most models are fine but a few dodgey ones have slipped through with the negative pressure error. We\'re testing the next version but are having to sacrifice speed for stability. \'Twas ever thus, I fear.

If you\'re quick, you can snap up some new short-duration (about a week on my machine) models that we\'ve been playing with on BETA. They\'re called FAMOUS and are looking at volcanic influence amongst other things, pretty graphs along the way. You might have to update your preferences to get these. Currently each is a 200 year block but ultimately build to 1000 years as the final upload of each can be used as a start position for the next.

In Ian\'s absence, I have set up the team at GenLife where the study is of the evolution of cyber-creatures. It appears to have been on the go since June so I don\'t know how it managed to slip through the usually efficient new-project-capture net.
As usual, I have no idea what they\'re actually doing but the admin is very responsive, which is always a good sign.

Hi Chigozie, and welcome to the project.
There was much discussion on this topic on the BBC climate boards but the concensus was that the value of the knowledge gain far outwieghed the minimal (but measurable) increase in energy usage.
The model writes to disk every so often and if it is switched off, it will restart from that last checkpoint. To maximise the efficiency of your model by not letting it repeat work already done, have a look at some early advice and my reply to it.

Interesting you knew my name.

Just wanted to make the welcome a bit more personal. Just a click on the name on the left takes you to a page with details on that person\'s computer such as speed and memory, (which can be helpful in diagnosing problems),a profile if they have one and also at the bottom lists the other projects they participate in. Don\'t worry, none of this info is personally identifiable. If you click on your own name, you get a lot more info that others can\'t see.

Hi James,
You have had 5 models fail so far so it may have looked as if your model had rewound, but in fact it had had started a new one from scratch. Take a look at this post over on the BBC boards. It\'s exactly the same model over there so the solutions apply equally here.
If you suspend the model make sure you do it on the Projects tab. If you do it on the Tasks tab you might accidentally get another model downloaded, which is possibly why you currently have 2 models running.
Another possibibility is that what you are seeing is the way BOINC switches between tasks. Having 2 models means that BOINC shares its time between them equally so it will run one model for say 30 mins then pause it while it runs the other one for 30 mins. With a slower processor, I would have advised stopping one of the models, but your\'s being fast enough, I would let them both run.
The graphics use a lot of processor power that could be better used running the model so for best performance have your screensaver set to Blank screen, or a simple generic one, and only look at the graphics occasionally.

Hope that\'s of help.

Just for clarification;
If you change any of the settings away from the default then you have to make sure that the you set use default settings, down at the very bottom, to no otherwise your changes won\'t apply. Also the updated preferences won\'t be applied until the next trickle or manual update. You may even need to exit and restart Boinc after that, but I\'m not sure as I don\'t use the graphics often.

Hi all,
All your current models are reporting home regularly so there is no problem with the computation, just the graphics.
Chris,
you had a model fail in early November with a graphics related problem so you are now running a different model. Don\'t worry, the first model produced 30 years of data before it died. Go to the website of your graphics card and get the most up to date drivers for it, which should prevent a similar failure.
All,
One of the options of the graphics is to display a \"wireframe\" globe. Triciabuk\'s method is perfectly OK but you need to do it every time you want to look at your globe.
To reset the default view to something more appealing got to Your account on the left here and scroll down to climateprediction.net preferences. In there go down to the bottom and click Edit...preferences. Now you can select what you want the default view of your model will show. For example;
Scene --- Temperature
Rotation --- Clockwise
Starfields --- On

When you are happy, click Update preferences at the bottom. Any changes you have made will not take effect until either the next time your model trickles or you manually update.
The screensaver and graphics use a lot of processor power that could be better used in running the model so most peolpe have their screensaver set to blank screen, for best performance, or to a simpler generic one.
Hope that helps everyone. If you still have problems, come back and tell us. The answer to your problem may help somebody else as well.
Edited for typos.
