31) Message boards : Number crunching : Pirates interfering with CPDN ? (Message 28600)

Post:
Thanks everyone for the help here.
Two things mentioned by mo.v that probably caused this morning\'s crash -
1) Yes - my machine does an automatic AV scan every morning at 0900 GMT.
2) My PC is a Pentium 4 H/T and it was running ABC alongside the CPDN model with no problems. It must have been the addition of the AV scan that tipped it \'over the edge\'.
3) (For fun....) Is there really a screensaver that you can see on BOINC projects?

Thanks for the explanation, Les - much appreciated!
Correct - I don\'t have a display card.
Do you need to change the system requirements section in the \'Getting Started\' section? Other prospective crunchers may be in the same situation as myself.....

That\'s strange. I\'ve run CPDN before on this PC and managed to finish a sulphur model previously.....

Perhaps the requirements for this project have changed.
I\'ll run other projects where 512MB of RAM is sufficient.

This happened today - is it just a coincidence or did the Pirates WU have something to do with it?

G\'day crunchers everywhere!

We are now starting Aussie Assault 6 (AA6). After being runner up in the last few polls for the AA, Einstein has been chosen to be the project which will receive our concentrated attention for the next few weeks.

Bruce Allen who is the Forum moderator, Project administrator, Project developer and Project scientist for Einstein has agreed, after much persuasion from members of the Team, and instigated by Mike Mitchell, to crunch Einstein for our Team. He has started this already and his numbers are very impressive.

The Aussie Assaults are a regular team-building exercise we run here at BOINC@AUSTRALIA - the results are always impressive and we have great fun at the same time. In the last Assault (on ABC@Home) another team - l\'Alliance Francophone - learnt how much fun these assaults can be and helped both BOINC@AUSTRALIA and the project itself achieve spectacular results.
(overview of that assault here.)

So - Gentlemen - START YOUR ENGINES !!!

(PSSST - Les - Wanna join us?)

Don\'t make me beg.
Oh crap, I just did.

Help us defeat those on the Dark Side of BOINC, Phoenix Rising,
and fight for all that is good and........ Heck, even I don\'t
believe that and I\'m writing it :faint:

If you join, I\'ll stop posting! ;-)

I liked this post so much I tried to join BOINC@AUSTRALIA.

Then I realised I was already a member!
So there\'s still room for any more who\'d like to join a team of crazy guys!

*** UPDATE TIME ! ***

Almost two weeks have passed since AA5 on ABC@Home drew to a nail-biting close.
Both teams - BOINC@AUSTRALIA and l\'Alliance Francophone gained a lot from the two weeks.

We have also gained ground in combined ranking - now placed 25th overall in team ranking.

Some of the guys are having a \'mini-assault\' on one of the \'medical\' projects - why not visit our forums and see if you can find out which project?
All of the individual project sub-fora are open to public view.
Link to the forums index - http://xsorbit31.com/users5/boincaustralia/index.php

Next item on the agenda for the team?
Discussions will be opening shortly to decide the target for AA6!

The Aussie Assault on ABC@Home is coming to an end and it has been a fantastic experience for all involved.

l\'Alliance Francophone ran up nearly three million credits and us Aussies are just creeping up to the two million mark now.

At the end of the day, though, it\'s not just the credits - it\'s the enjoyment of competition, team spirit and understanding different nationalities/cultures.
The guys at AF now realise exactly what we try to achieve on these Aussie Assaults and have thanked us for showing them something extra that can be gained from BOINCing.

The head honcho on the project - Hendrik - deserves a special mention for keeping everything together while two teams of looneys went at it hammer and tongs!

Looking forward to Aussie Assault 6..........

Remember the Aussie Assault on SETI@Home a couple of months back?
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=35817

Well, we\'re at it again! AA5 has been mounted on http://abcathome.com/
and it has turned into a fantastic struggle - BOINC@AUSTRALIA versus l\'Alliance Francophone.

Here\'s a clip from the project news section;

06 February, 2007
It\'s been a while since the last news. Everything is running pretty good, and we\'re very satisfied. Currently there is a friendly exciting competition going on between Boinc Australia and all french speaking persons gathered in l\'Alliance Francophone. Who will win is an interesting question, the French speaking guys have assembled an entire army, but the Australians are tough! Or will a third team arise and claim victory? Further more, today I rewrote part of the stats daemon, I hope it will be implemented tomorrow: stats can be updated more frequently and it contains a few bug fixes.

....and you can follow some of the battle here -
http://abcathome.com/forum_thread.php?id=76#1638

AA5 is scheduled to run until February 14th and it will be interesting to see the final result
of this David vs. Goliath face-off!
http://abcathome.com/top_teams.php?sort_by=total_credit

Of course, anyone can join in the fun - it\'s not just the race for No.1 !

Thanks for the info, Les!
(I like this place; somewhere finally where the admins care and respond to the crunchers. A few of the projects, which shall remain nameless, do not show this level of support for crunchers.)

I won\'t be able to run CPDN exclusively 24/7 but I will certainly give it a good proportion of my CPU output in future.

Now I know what to expect next time I run a CPDN WU.

I\'ll be taking a break from CPDN for a few weeks but I\'ll return refreshed and ready to go on a new WU.

Is it true the new TCM models take twice as long as a Sulphur model? The sulphur model I\'ve just completed was around 7 months in crunching so I would be in danger of going over the deadline if it is still 1 year......

Thanks for the prompt reply but the WU is still not finalising and uploading.
Continuous hard disk activity still there so I\'ve suspended again.
BOINC Manager now states CPU time 1462.51.33, Progress 0% and To Completion = 1618.48.57.

This WU -

reached 100% completion half-an-hour ago but my hard disk is still working franticly. BOINC manager states WU is still running, CPU time 1462.51.33 , Progress 100% and To Completion = 0.00 .
No other messages appear in BOINC manager.

Any ideas anyone?
(to stop the hard disk activity, I\'ve now suspended the WU)
