Both new batches appear to be the older "Weather At Home 2 (wah2) v8.24" application, so it looks like a bit of benchmarking is going on. |

Posted 16 Oct 2023 by Iain Inglis Post: It's been said elsewhere several times the long deadline of 1yr is a hangover from when CPDN started and they were running long multi-year simulations which ran for months. In practice as Dave says the real deadline for when the scientists start work on the data is ~6-8 weeks. The deadline is going to be shortened for future batches. There was also another issue in which those long-running CPDN tasks would dominate processing to the exclusion of other projects. The long deadlines allowed those users who wanted to run a variety of projects to have completions on all the projects. Shortening the deadlines may bring that competition back, unless BOINC has got better at sharing the resources. (Not a problem for users such as myself who only run CPDN except during gaps.) |

The trickle files, which cause credits to be allocated are small files that have been uploading for everyone (I think). The larger Zip files have the useful data and they are sometimes having problems. |

Having failed any upload for a week or so and lost one model trying other fixes, they're now all uploading, slowly. I might try to play with the limit to increase it, if possible. Thanks to those who suggested that approach. Back in business! |

Posted 13 Oct 2023 by Iain Inglis Post: Computers with only a few tasks running don't seem to have as much of a problem uploading. I run the first one of any batch on its own to check the speed, so having one model doesn't affect the upload. I had 18 zips plus a restart waiting, tried everything I could think of, then suspended carefully (wait for checkpoint, wait a bit more etc.), stopped BOINC, rebooted computer, broadband. It made no difference to the upload failures on restart, but when the model was resumed it crashed immediately. Another model has downloaded and it will be running uninterrupted, with the <rsc_disk_bound> manually edited to see if the model can at least get to the end. |

Posted 8 Oct 2023 by Iain Inglis Post: I've now got ten Zips waiting to upload, three nominally in progress with the farthest at 7.49%. The <rsc_disk_bound> is 2e9 bytes and 24 zips at average ~99 MB plus "_restart" and "_out" zips are going to bust that limit. One other task downloaded during upload failures and trickles are uploading, so the general comms appears to be working. The model will need to be suspended before completion unless the upload problem is fixed. I normally run tasks without restarts but as the disk bound is approached that will be an option and might fix a local problem (though I can see no other evidence of that). Any other suggestions? |

Unfortunately, having been out of the system, trust has been lost and it's not obvious European partners will want to risk bringing UK groups on board in case it damages their chances -- this is what happened before the referendum when Brexit was approaching, and who's to say if the UK government will change its mind. We'll see. Anyway, this is off topic, so I'll leave it there. +1 Likewise. Kicked off project proposals on uncertainty grounds: we were repeatedly told by our long-time EU partners that they wouldn’t choose a company that might need to be got rid of later when there were plenty of companies that didn’t have that risk. Uncertainly matters. Not climate research but the same funding programmes. Likewise also on applications. It was so awful we had to rotate the people completing the applications year to year, even though we knew from experience why the checks were necessary. Let’s hope this settles down to something productive. |
