41) Questions and Answers : Preferences : My BOINC doesn\'t work (Message 29030)

Since CPDN doesn\'t take up 9GB of disk space and you\'d even be hard pressed to be able to fill that space if you attached to 30 projects, why not lower the 9GB to something in the amount you seem to have free? Say 5GB.

I\'m using that number and haven\'t got a problem.

The preferences_override.xml file is a file made by the simple GUI\'s preferences settings. Whatever information it doesn\'t find in there is still read from the global_prefs.xml file. You\'re not using a 5.9.x development branch BOINC version, so you do not have the advanced preferences in Boinc Manager yet, which set all preferences for that one computer.

The simple GUI\'s preferences can set the disk space used.
So open BOINC Manager, View, Simple View. In the Simple View window that opens, press Preferences. If you want to use the preferences set through CPDN, uncheck the option to use the preferences and save your changes. To return to Advanced view, just press Advanced view. ;-)

5) So, has the founder updated his email address on his Account page? (It\'s an option near the top.)

I think the main problem is that the Team Founder made a new account. So changing his email address to the old address doesn\'t automatically make him TF.

He needs to log in with either the old account, or with the account key of that old account, before he can make any changes. Since he can\'t request the account key to be sent to him as the old email address is defunct, that\'s giving him the problem. Had he not made a new account, but just changed the email address on the old account, there wouldn\'t have been a problem.

So as the 3rd option he just has to wait another 3 weeks until the option to take over the team is given free to him.

Why 2 months? To give team founders time to react. What if someone is on vacation or in the hospital for some time? There\'s also a 3 month wait after which you can try again, if you get waved off by a TF or miss the window at which you can take over as TF.

Did the founder recieve an email?

No, he doesn\'t have that email address anymore.

If the team founder does not respond to your email challenge within 2 months time, then the team founder option will be given to the person who sent the email.

The drive must be at least 37GB, or else the numbers don\'t fit. ;)
So, using 37GB as the number to start with, 37GB = 100%

37-27 = 10GB
BOINC Max usage = 3GB
Free maximum = 3GB

So total disk space after reservations is 4GB free.

The computer uses 1024MB of memory (Albeit that part of it is used as videoRAM).
It\'s using Windows XP. As far as I know, XP uses the same page file settings as it has memory installed. So that\'s 1GB.
4-1=3GB (your free maximum!)

Any little bit of page file used more at this point in the free space of your disk drive and BOINC will tell you to free space as else it can\'t get you work.

The Use at most x GB disk space and Leave at least y GB disk space free numbers have priority. They are strictly followed. The Use at most z% of total disk space is a control number. But that one is broken here already anyway as 40% of 37GB means you need 14.8GB free.

So if Use at most 80% does not work, lower your number for Leave at least y GB free.
45) Questions and Answers : Preferences : how do I change screen saver preferences (Message 28899)

Post:
Jord, Thanks for that. My boxes are all dual-core but I\'ve never used anything but a blank screen saver, and that only for a few minutes, on any of them. (Perhaps I\'m remiss in not doing it for the experience, so as to be able to better answer questions...)

You can check this at any time, by allowing BOINC to be your screen saver. Even with project applications that don\'t have a screen saver, the BOINC screen saver will show. And then switch to a project that has a screen saver. :)

I also confess that you are the first person I\'ve seen in nearly four years with CPDN who set his Projects to switch every few minutes. What on earth for?

On a machine that has multiple CPUs and different projects attached with work, the screen saver will change between the running projects every 10 minutes. That\'s what he meant.

As to why the screen saver works at work and not at home, not a clue.
Double check that BOINC is still the appointed screen saver in Windows, that BOINC isn\'t suspended, or the laptop isn\'t hibernating.

It isn\'t helpful to duplicate posts.

There is a response for your other post.

And for about all his other duplicate posts on all the other forums he posted it on. ;-)

Although at least Spinhenge and Protein tell him how to download executables... through the company firewall.

May I ask in here how you check your CPID?
If you check it through BOINCStats.com, then do know that if you have a different nickname on any of the other projects using the same email address, that you can end up with multiple CPIDs as well. Or that all your projects are neatly shown under one CPID if you give the 2 (or more) nicknames to search on. divided by \'/\' marks.

How come though his CPU didn\'t melt right through his laptop, his desk, the floor(s) and the earth under his building? ;-)

I excluded BOINC on Norton and AVG, and they also run without incident.

The trouble with AVG Free is that you can\'t exclude any directories in the automatic test. Yes, you can set up a personalized scan, but you can only run that when running it by hand. Not automatically. The User Test is only available in AVG Professional. Not something most of us run.

It doesn\'t work in the screen saver. It\'s been a while since BOINC had the CTRL+key option for the screen saver, but that\'s been taken out until further notice. Perhaps that it comes back in BOINC 6.0, which will have a whole new graphics end.

It does work in the Show Graphics option in Boinc Manager, though. And that graphics window can be maximized to fill the screen.

You do not have enough memory to run CPDN. A minimum of 512MB is needed.
53) Questions and Answers : Getting started : Adding credit from old projects? (Message 28516)
Posted 7 May 2007 by Jord
Post:
Climateprediction is a totally different project from Seti. You can\'t show credits gathered from one project on another project\'s web site, as they use different databases.

If you want to do so, use one of the statistics signature pictures, or check in a 3rd party\'s stats site, such as BOINCStats or BOINC Synergy Stats.

55) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Smaller Model Units (Message 28430)
Posted 4 May 2007 by Jord
Post:
If you\'d like a model for a work unit, SETI is good, ABC is short.

One cannot compare the work done. Seti searches for that 1 elusive message by ET. ABC looks for triples in the code given to you.

CPDN looks for weather changes over hundred years. How exactly do you expect that to be compressed in a result that runs in an hour? Unless you aren\'t interested in the science done behind whatever you crunch for, can no one come up with a comparison this strange.

Why not add Primegrid into it, which searches for high primes, yet only runs 5 minutes? If it\'s run time results you want.

I think the thing to fix this is this:

Open client_state.xml with Notepad.
Use Edit->Find to find hadcm3transum_5.40

It should show something like this:

<file_info>
<name>hadcm3transum_5.40_windows_intelx86.zip</name>
<nbytes>1553234.000000</nbytes>
<max_nbytes>0.000000</max_nbytes>
<status>1</status>
<signature_required/>
<file_signature>
13b1fa3bb546429efed52dd5c1e1523fcdd96b5439c761f6b0ce60cf5c303453

58f1a923d2aa089aabf27ce30e20f0e9bab7bc256c01dbabb34b8e54bf90f591
.
</file_signature>
<url>http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/download/hadcm3transum_5.40_windows_intelx86.zip</url>
</file_info>

Check if your nbytes number is the same as above, if not edit it to show like that.
And make sure the status is 1. I think yours is still at 0.

Now save client_state.xml, by going File->Save. Then exit it with the X. (Do NOT Save As.. as that will add .txt to the file).

Make sure hadcm3transum_5.40_windows_intelx86.zip is in your c:\\program files\\boinc\\projects\\climateprediction.net folder (as a zip file, not decompressed).

And that should fix it. The Downloading status should fix itself the next time BOINC had contact with Climate.

If you still want to wait for confirmation from a moderator here (or Thyme), then please wait with restarting BOINC.

No, not after we fix your client_state.xml file. Then that entry in Boinc Manager will be gone.

Well, it wasn\'t necessary to decompress it, as BOINC will do that for you. ;)
I asked Thyme Lawn to come by and check what may need to be changed in client_state.xml, as I can\'t tell you myself as I am not running CPDN (also due to an instable system, but in my case it was broken chipset drivers ;))
